DS won’t sleep due to awful heat

DS won’t sleep tonight - I think because it’s so disgustingly hot in his room (29C!)

I’ve had to get him up and put him in the garden to get some cooler air. But his bedtime was meant to be 7.15 and he’s now been up 6.5 hours!!! Scared he’s going to get massively overtired. WWYD?

Open the window. Because it's (I presume) cooler outside than in, point a fan at the window. Will blow the hot air out &suck cool air in.
Depends on his age but also cold hot water bottle?

peaches35 · 18/07/2021 20:24

Window is open but it’s having no effect Sad

He’s 15 months.

I'm In the exact same situation! I'm on holiday too, and everyone else is having lots of fun downstairs so I'm getting fomo! How old is your son? My daughter is 10 months and usually not a particularly bad sleeper.

Another here.
He is sweating!! Windows open, I've had blinds shut all day, gave him cold water and nothing is helping.
Currently 1.5 hours past bed time Smile

ShinyGreenElephant · 18/07/2021 20:30

Yep I've been putting Dd2 who's 2.5 and dd3 who's nearly 5 months to bed since 7. Fans on, they're only in vests but its still very warm. They're having none of it. Dying for a glass of fizz in the garden but I reckon I've got another hour of this.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2021 20:31

If he gets over tired he gets over tired, nothing you can do about it. Better to sit in the garden and try and cool down and maybe have ( another) bath later before trying to put him down?

Twizbe · 18/07/2021 20:35

Put ours to bed with fans on and just in pants / nappy.

It's hard to sleep in this heat for everyone. You just have to go with it and they will be ok

SeaToSki · 18/07/2021 20:38

Get a towel really damp and drape it on his crib sheet, lie him down, add another damp towel over the top of him and set a fan to blow the air around his room

peaches35 · 18/07/2021 20:39

DS is also sweating on his head!

He’s fine in the garden but cried when I tried to take him up again. I’m really drained and just want to chill out. Can’t wait until the temperatures cool down, it’s miserable!

@SeaToSki is it ok for him to sleep with damp bedding?

Valhalla17 · 18/07/2021 20:43

Get a fan? Lie him down with a cold flannel on his forehead?

cookiesandcreamm · 18/07/2021 20:45

@SeaToSki

Get a towel really damp and drape it on his crib sheet, lie him down, add another damp towel over the top of him and set a fan to blow the air around his room
Is this a thing? I couldn't think of anything worse 😂😩

That sounds like it’ll be far too cold for a 15 month old. A fan is a good idea though.
YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 18/07/2021 20:47

Same here, dd(18 months) is normally asleep by 7. Still wide awake and grizzly. Gonna be a long night, and a grumpy day tomorrow

Uramaki · 18/07/2021 20:48

It's awful. Last night was awful. I've only just got LO to settle down. Gave LO a bath, not too cold but colder than usual. Seemed to help.

Hartleyhare1206 · 18/07/2021 20:49

Do you have a travel cot you could put in a downstairs room thats cooler, and he can sleep there? X

Scared129 · 18/07/2021 20:52

DD is 15 months too and didn't go down til 10 last night. She refused to nap in the day either because of the heat so she was awake for 13 hours straight! She woke up at 12 crying, but luckily went back to sleep. Up at 6.30am!

Had such a whingey hot day it's unreal. Tried to get her to nap all day but only managed 40 minutes out of her.

I was expecting the worst tonight as her tiredness must be unreal. I gave her a cool bath (31 degrees) and put her to bed as normal at 6.30 and my gosh the baby fairy must love me as she's still asleep. It's 29 in there!

I've heard tomorrow is gonna be the same as well... 😑

JennieLee · 18/07/2021 20:54

With really little ones, can cots etc be brought downstairs as these rooms may be cooler....

Adults can then retreat upstairs?

And put them just in nappies with a sheet for bedding..

peaches35 · 18/07/2021 21:04

Thanks for the advice all! I’ve just managed to get DS up from the garden, given him some more (cool) formula and he’s gone down quietly in his cot though is still awake.

Hope everyone else’s DC fall asleep soon!

OP posts:
peaches35 · 18/07/2021 21:07

It’s also much noisier with all the windows open!! But what can you do?

OP posts:
cookiesandcreamm · 18/07/2021 21:15

My LO is over now too!
White noise thankfully drowns outside noise out!

miltonj · 18/07/2021 21:34

Daughter now asleep, and I'm in the hot tub with a gin! Let's hope she (and all your lots kids) stay down now.

Kittyswhiskers · 18/07/2021 21:37

Mine has cried so much through tiredness he’s been sick. This is the second night running and I’m shattered!!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 18/07/2021 22:09

Mine is finally off. Now to try and get some sleep before the asd 7 year old is up somewhere between 1. Night all

Maggiesfarm · 18/07/2021 22:13

Is it cooler downstairs? I slept downstairs the last couple of nights and it was fine, upstairs was like a sauna.

I'd keep him down and sleep there with him.
