I am a terrible terrible mother :(

Feeling like the worst mother in the world right now. Please no hate comments because I'm already crying as it is and just feel incredibly stupid.

Major accident happened when I tried to dream feed DS (3 months). Only the bottle that I was using wasn't the bottle that he didn't finish an hour ago. It was from A WHOLE 24 FRICKING HOURS!
We have been out all day and DP washed and sterilised the bottles when we got back, as we do before we go to bed so we have plenty of bottles for the next day. But for some reason he only did 4 so he didn't take the one of my bedside table from last night. God knows why he didn't realise that he wouldn't have only had 4 bottles.

Anyway, DS didn't drink it. He pulled his face (rightly so) but some had dropped out of the teat into his mouth. In my tired state I'm not sure if he spat some of this out or if he swallowed it. It wasn't until I made a fresh bottle that I realised it was that old.
Will he get sick? I'm worried that he is going to be vomiting in the night. I'm probably not going to sleep at all tonight now. I'm such an idiot... 😞

Don't worry love. Your little boy will be fine! I know it feels terrible but it really isn't.

milleniumhandandprawn · 15/07/2021 23:30

He'll be fine, honestly.
You're not a terrible mother, at all. He maybe got 5 mls before he spat it out. It might give him a little tummy ache, maybe a runny poo, most likely nothing at all.

nimbuscloud · 15/07/2021 23:31

Please don’t worry
He will be absolutely fine

Don't panic, DM once fed 6 week old DS opened formula which was over a week old (although it was in the fridge). He was fine - not even an upset tummy!

It sounds like your DS swallowed an absolutely miniscule amount, and he will almost definitely be fine. You are not a terrible mother, far from it. We all make mistakes! Please don't beat yourself up.

Toottootdrivers · 15/07/2021 23:33

I've literally just posted on another thread about this. I did exactly this when DS was tiny. He was fine. You're not a terrible mother. 3 month olds are hard work

Mzy123 · 15/07/2021 23:36

Stop worrying, he will be fine. Please stop being so hard on yourself. I bet he is neither up nor down and more than likely spat it all out. These things happen to us all at one point or another. No harm done.

GreyhoundG1rl · 15/07/2021 23:38

He will be absolutely fine. Give yourself a break.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 15/07/2021 23:42

that's not a major accident.
that's not even a blip on the radar.

you are very much overreacting and you are definitely not a bad mother in any shape or form.

a few drops shouldn't cause any harm, but if he gets sick that's good, that means his body is doing what it should.
please stop worrying & go to bed.
it's nothing

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/07/2021 23:48

It's a mistake. Mistakes happen, and a few tiny drops will not harm your baby or make him ill. Please try not to worry about it and don't beat yourself up about it any more!

Bumpsadaisie · 15/07/2021 23:48

If its any consolation in year's time when he is 15 months old, you'll be posting from A&E as he will have thrown himself down the stairs requiring stitches, in the ONE five second block that you happened to turn your head!

Despite the fact that you will have watched him like a hawk all day for the other 23 hours, 59 minutes and 55 seconds!!!

Seesawmummadaw · 15/07/2021 23:50

He’ll be sticking all sorts in his mouth soon. Don’t worry!

It’s really not a major accident.

purplecorkheart · 15/07/2021 23:50

You are not a terrible Mom far from it. Your little baba has stomach acid that will kill anything in the couple of drops that he may or may not have had in the unlikely event that it he consumed anything. Dry your eyes and sending you a big hug. You are not a terrible Mom

TwoZeroTwoZero · 15/07/2021 23:52

A major accident? It's a mishap if anything at all. If he vomits then you'll clear it up.

If, in the very, very unlikely event that he keeps vomiting so much that he can't keep anything down and has dry nappies then you take him to hospital and they'll give him a rehydration drink a few mls atva tine until his stomach settles.

Calm down. It's not like you've accidentally chucked him down the stairs or something.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 16/07/2021 00:00

I could list all the things that my kids have done or had happen to them but it'd be a very long post. And none of them mean I'm a bad mother because accidents and stupid things happen.

so just some examples for you: slug eating, shoe eating, poo eating, wee drinking, worm eating, decorating bathroom with tampons, baby toe biting, knocked out tooth (literally within 5 mins of me saying to stop playfighting), stepping in glass shard & needing surgery under GA, lost items, broken stuff, glass breaking in mouth, cut lip on escalator, falling down stairs, blocked loos, fingers caught in doors etc...

so please please understand that it's impossible to avoid some bad things happening. it's life. babies & kids are quite resilient. and yours will be fine

olidora63 · 16/07/2021 00:09

Babies /Toddlers/ Children/ Human beings are very resilient…if not we wouldn’t exist ….remember all the advice we get is aimed at the most stupid, irresponsible people that exist…baby will be fine 💐

Lalliella · 16/07/2021 00:10

You are definitely it a terrible mother! In fact you sound like a really good one to care so much about a tiny error. Sounds like your baby had hardly any of the bad milk. So stop worrying! In no time at all he’ll be crawling round licking the floor!

TaraR2020 · 16/07/2021 00:15

This isnt a major accident, I understand you feel terrible but you're a good mother so please, please stop giving yourself a hard time!

You will both be fine!

Horehound · 16/07/2021 00:15

That's quite on overreaction to "my baby almost drank some off milk but didn't".
Come on op.

I dropped my baby after a bath and he was so slippery and wriggled upwards out of my arms
He fell and smashed his head on the marble surface leaving a big gash on his head that didn't heal for months. That made me feel like a shit mother.

Your baby will be fine!

emetophobe12 · 16/07/2021 00:18

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I panicked and probably overreacted a bit. I was more worried at the fact that he has kendamil which is full cream milk and most likely will have curdled (especially in the heat we've had today). I didn't even smell it I just got DP to throw it straight away.
It's almost been 2 hours and he's still sound asleep so I'm going to try and get some sleep myself. Thank you again. Your messages have really helped me to feel better.

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba your comment made me laugh! Thank you! I can't wait for all of that to come 😩😂 I'm going to turn grey pretty soon aren't I 🙈

OP posts:
clary · 16/07/2021 00:21

Yh OP it will be totally fine.

I never sterilised anything for DS2 (breastfed) - I toyed with it but then saw him crawling to the pram and licking the wheels (he was an early crawler) so I thought, well, not much point eh? He was a proper neglected third child :D

adeleh · 16/07/2021 00:24

You're not a terrible mother at all. I once banged the roof of the boot down on my 3-year-old's head because I was so cross and upset about something that I wasn't concentrating properly. Another time I accidentally shut a car door on his hand. I'd be thrilled if I could look back and the worst I'd done was try to give him some old milk. Forgive yourself and move on.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 16/07/2021 00:39

😘
glad you feel better and glad I made you laugh!
grey is inevitable 🤣

he's asleep so get yourself to bed, quick!

tomorrow I can tell you more tales. we have 7 kids and many nieces & nephews so I could easily write a book of shenanigans!😁

OnTheBrink1 · 16/07/2021 00:47

Don’t worry at all. Stuff like this happens all the time with babies and kids. Had 3 kids myself and made far worse mistakes!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 16/07/2021 00:47

a bonus story:
I left 2 fully clothed boys (5 & 3 yo) playing nicely on the floor with their trains & cars.

went to the loo. 3 mins tops.
returned to 2 butt naked kids standing on the windowsill, giggling like on drugs while shaking their willies at innocent pedestrians. 😳🤣

PunchedJudy · 16/07/2021 00:53

Have an 'educated guess ' about how many times this sort of thing has happened in the last 40 years.

He'll be fine
Mistake.
Endeavour to not do it again and move on :)
