New born and 19 month old without double pram?

Can you have 2 under 2 without the need for a double pram? If so how do you do it? I really don't want to have to buy another double pram.

Baby 2 due November and we'll have a 19month gap - like you I don't want to buy another. Intending not to, and if I find I desperately need one will get on Amazon prime!

Put your newborn in a sling!

girlmom21 · 08/07/2021 19:06

Get a sling/baby carrier for the baby or buggy board for the toddler.

Good luck 😄 im going to have a new born and a 3 year old and I feel like I need a double pram

@Bubblespider

Put your newborn in a sling!
There are limits to how long a newborn should be in a sling, it's better for their backs to be flat. I'd carry the 19 month old rather than a newborn - if you get distracted by the toddler, you might not notice the baby can't breathe (this happens far more often that people realise, sadly).

I had a newborn and 2.5yo, planned not to get a double pram because we're short on space. Soon changed my mind when my toddler would throw a strop when out and about and I couldn't pick her up because I had the baby in a sling. She didn't tantrum that much before the baby came. I kept having to pass my newborn to a random kind looking stranger when I was out!

It was also absolute bliss when they'd both go to sleep in it at the same time - 2.5yo refused to nap once the baby came (not uncommon, they get fomo). Also when the baby was bigger and I wanted him to nap in the pram it was much easier to be able to load them both up than cajole the toddler into walking with us, she'd have gone too slow to get a sleepy rhythm going!

You can manage without but I found it much easier with. I got a second hand one for about £60, it was well worth it! Lots of them are quite compact or foldable and fit in a car boot.

villainousbroodmare · 08/07/2021 19:23

Would strongly recommend, should be value to be had in a secondhand one.

ShinyGreenElephant · 08/07/2021 19:24

I could not live without my double buggy despite the fact that at LEAST half the time the 2yo is walking and the babys in the sling. Absolutely essential as far as I'm concerned

Jujujuly · 08/07/2021 19:26

I had a 2.5 year gap and just about managed without a double buggy. Had older one in the buggy and baby in sling for the first 6 months. At 6 months the baby was getting heavy to be in the sling constantly so I moved her to pram and the older one (at 3) to the buggy board. 6 months in for you and your older one will still be just 2. They will definitely need a buggy IMO. I think you need to get a double for your own sake.

MindyStClaire · 08/07/2021 19:32

Two year age gap and couldn't have coped without the double buggy. Maybe if we took the car absolutely everywhere but even still. 19 months is a long way off being able to reliably use a buggy board.

User0ne · 08/07/2021 19:32

I did it with Ds1 and 2 (16m gap). It was easier after 8 weeks when Ds2 could go on the sling for longer.

Sometimes it was painfully slow and could be embarrassing if Ds1 was having a strop. O learnt that plenty of snacks and rests were needed plus distraction and not expecting anything like an adult walking pace.

But I had an allotment 3km away which we had to walk to every day (livestock) and we managed just fine.

Bobbybobbins · 08/07/2021 19:35

We got one secondhand and sold our one seater. I loved walking while they both slept - most relaxing time of the day. We got a Phil and Ted so converted into a one seater with buggy board after 6 months or so.

fuckingsickofcovid · 08/07/2021 19:36

Slings for longer periods of time hurt my back, there was 2 years between mine and it was annoying but I had to buy a double pushchair

Scotinoz · 08/07/2021 19:37

I had 16mths between mine, and used the double a decent amount. It was good to be able to put both kids in the pram when they were crying and just leave the house. Plus I did a bit of walking in the early days while they both napped.

I think I’d consider a used double - I always see great deals on MarketPlace etc

Calmestofallthechickens · 08/07/2021 19:44

22 months between mine and didn’t have a double - baby in the pram and toddler walked/biked and was put in the ergo carrier when he was tired. He’s a good and co operative Walker though - if your toddler is likely to run off then you might want a buggy foe restraint...

BackforGood · 08/07/2021 19:56

2y5m between my dcs 1 and 2.
I found the double buggy invaluable.
dc1 had walked everywhere before dc2 was born, but I couldn't have managed without the double.

OTOH, my sister had 17months between hers and never had one. That said, she rarely needed to go out on her own with the 2 of them. Her dh had a lot of time at home in the day, and her MiL and FiL were both wonderful and supportive / helpful. Also, her dc1 was a very calm, placid, well behaved little girl and my dc1 was the direct opposite .....

dopeyduck · 08/07/2021 20:00

Absolutely. Put the newborn in a sling or the 19 month old on a buggy board.

Lauren83 · 08/07/2021 20:01

I have a 17 month gap between mine and couldn't manage without a double, tried both buggy board recently and a sling when they were smaller but both caused more problems than they solved.

cazinge · 08/07/2021 20:24

25mo gap between mine. I needed one eventhough DC1 was a good walker for restraint purposes (he'd stopped napping at 22mo so didn't get them both sleeping unfortunately). Did try without one to start with but once DP went back to work I couldn't run after DS if he bolted (esp while breastfeeding the baby). Bought a cheap £100 umbrella fold one which lies flat and is v narrow so no issues with doorways.

However due to covid / lockdowns etc we didn't use it much as I wanted DC1 to walk to tire him out so put baby in the pram. By the time DS was 2y7m so baby about 6mo we stopped using it and bought a buggy board (Lidl £20 one Grin). Now at age 3 I couldn't get him in a buggy if I tried but many friends with similar gaps still use theirs.

Will sell mine 2nd hand, hopefully get £50 ish for it. Eventhough it was used so little, I couldn't have managed.

frazzledasarock · 08/07/2021 20:28

I have a 20month age gap between my two. And I really needed the double buggy.

I tried the sling and toddler thing and it did not work for me, my baby was quite big and I was still suffering from the after effects of SPD I had in pregnancy.

I gave in and bought a double buggy about a month in with newborn, I couldn’t juggle with a single, especially when toddler got tired and needed to sit, and I was tired and couldn’t carry baby in sling any longer as it was exhausting.

Luckystar1 · 08/07/2021 20:34

Nope, like PP, my SPD would not allow for the amount of walking I did with the 2 of them (20
Month gap).

Nothing beats strapping 2 children into something to walk easily somewhere. It gives you some space too.

I highly, highly recommend an out and about nipper double.

c24680 · 08/07/2021 20:37

I've got a just turned 3 year old and a 4 month old baby, we haven't bought a double pram instead we've got a buggy board. It works really well for us at the moment, our walks are getting longer and long and DD loves being able to hop on and off. You can get them with seats as well.

GrannieD · 08/07/2021 20:43

We had a Meego , it’s a buggy board but with a seat on and a steering wheel. Also has straps for their waist so they can’t jump off when they want to. Much easier than the double pram we had.

LadyBugg · 08/07/2021 22:42

Aw that was our age gap, your post is making me broody! I did buy a double, and I'd say I used it 50% and the other half of the time I used the sling and the buggy. You could get away without having one, but i would say get a cheap second hand one for days when everyone is tired or you just need to strap them in and walk for miles to get some peace and quiet for you all.
