I need help understanding what you do before we remove the nappies (imminently). I've seen kids weeing in all kinds of places and pre-kids, it all looked a bit weird.

What are the rules?!

A couple of examples of where DS has announced he's needed a wee:

  • On a bridge on a fairly busy road, just off quiet side streets 10 minutes walk from home
  • Near the grass bit next to the London Eye. Some trees, no idea where the nearest toilet would be or what the queues would be like.

Appreciate any education you can give me on this!

I had something like this with my first DS. I think mine was from eBay and it was a kids version, you can get different animal themed ones. Obviously not good for a poo. Also useful to have in the car if you're stuck in traffic.

This has just brought up the memory of a mum with her son who were paying at the tills in the shop where I was working in. The son said that he needed a wee, she asked me where the nearest toilets were, I told her that there was a cafe literally next door that would be fine to use, she huffed and produced a potty right there in front of the till. This was before I had kids myself and I think my mouth just hung open as I watched him pull down his pants and wee in front of the whole store. Just insane in my opinion.
As a mum, I honestly just made it obligatory to have a wee stop at strategic points on every trip out. Never had an emergency so crucial that we couldn't find a toilet.

I never took a potty out and about with me I always brought spare clothes and a pull up in case they needed it. I found in my own experience (and every child is different) that once they understand potty training then they can hold it for a bit. Lay off the drinks when you are out and about and make them go before you leave the house. My dd trained at 2 and my ds at 3 and a half so they all do things differently and don't get too stressed out over it. Also be prepared for accidents. And honestly treat it all with humour. We always wave to a lovely tree where DS did his first open air wee.

We didn’t carry anything

Outside we’d just go for “wild wees” otherwise we took him to the loo every opportunity so when arriving at the supermarket and again when leaving, and get used to doing a scoop and run to the nearest loo.

I think DS as over 3 before he could hold it for more than a minute or two, but I don’t remember having more than a handful of accidents.
