In regards to choking (not health/ sugar) what age would you let your child eat haribo

I took my son to get his haircut today. He is 2 next week. The barber bribed him with a pack of haribo. He has clung onto them ever since.

I normally wouldn't allow him to eat them, I'm not fussy about the health benefit but would be worried he would choke.

Can anyone advise me? Have you let your 2 year olds eat sweets like that and is it ok?

Yes at 2 haribo as a treat is ok, much better than a chuppa chup which used to be the go to bribe at the hairdressers.

Thanks so much!

Not at 2, no.
My son is also 2 next week and I wouldn't allow him to have sweets. He doesn't understand them so I'd take them away (harsh, I know!).

Not that I'd judge anyone I just personally wouldn't allow them to have sweets at 2 or a lolly.

Oh my god no, sorry, that's crazy! Personally 4 here for jellies or marshmallows

RosaBaby2 · 29/06/2021 17:17

Do you mean the little 10p bags, I think they're fine as they are miniature. I didn't like him having the big ones, he's 3 now and I do still try and avoid.

AdalineStephen · 29/06/2021 17:35

Wait until you all have your second children...

Etsylicious · 29/06/2021 17:38

If they’re the miniature ones they’re okay :)

I have 4 and we're a relaxed family but choking hazards are choking hazards!!

BertieBotts · 29/06/2021 17:39

Ds2 has had them from about 2 but only supervised. DS1 gave him some and then left the room and he did nearly choke then. I had assumed he would know to watch him and he assumed that as I said he could have them it was fine (he is 12, not 4 or something!)

He is nearly 3 now and I would still supervise him with anything like that. He has a tendency not to even try to chew things.

mayblossominapril · 29/06/2021 17:40

Mines nearly 4 and I won’t allow hair I because of the choking hazard.
Will he swap them for a pack of dolly mixtures?
I’m not precious about sugar/ healthy food but I’m bloody careful about choking hazards

BertieBotts · 29/06/2021 17:41

I don't think the miniature ones are really better, they would still be dangerous if they stuck in the throat and might even be worse as you may not even try to chew them. But it was a normal sized one that DS2 nearly choked on.

What an odd comment Confused. Choking hazard is a choking hazard.
stayathomer · 29/06/2021 17:48

Ps OP never be afraid to go with your gut and cause a tantrum/scene if necessary (from someone who used to try to keep the peace when in public!!!)

Morgan12 · 29/06/2021 17:50

My 2 year old can eat them no problem. The miniature ones though.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 29/06/2021 17:51

I have multiple kids and am crazy relaxed but...I've known 2 (yes 2) families that have lost kids to choking (3 and 5). It just terrifies me. 5 for all that stuff-anything which may tempt them to suck instead of chew

LynetteScavo · 29/06/2021 17:53

Personally not before they started school, so four.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 29/06/2021 17:55

Yeah, ds is also 2 next week (beginning of July 2019 was busy) and he has them as a treat... although as he's with dm and mil twice a week, I can imagine he has them more frequently than I know 🤦‍♀️

LST · 29/06/2021 17:57

Christ I was so lax. Thank God mine are older now!

icepackquestion · 29/06/2021 17:57

Thanks all. I managed to distract him and take them off him with no tantrum.

My daughter is nearly 5 and I didn't let her have them until recently. And as it wasn't unanimous I decided against it.

Mine is nearly 7 and I still don’t like her having them! I think it’s only in the last year I’ve let her. Still not allowed lolly’s.

feb2022 · 29/06/2021 18:00

My 2 year old has them.. but I do bite them in half first because he will just try and swallow them whole, I don't give him the bigger packs tho only miniature ones

olderthanyouthink · 29/06/2021 18:12

I wouldn't and I was shocked that my daughters nursery gave out popcorn and and mini marshmallows. 4/5ish minimum

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 29/06/2021 18:38

Personally 5. The refs are no whole nuts, marshmallows or popcorn before 5 due to choking risk. I’d put jellied sweets and hard boiled sweets in the same risk category.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 29/06/2021 18:43

What an odd comment. I have two children and stand by my position that I’ll not feed certain foods before around 5yrs old. This isn’t about kids having a bit of sugar or being PFB. Choking risks are a legitimate concern. I still cut my almost 4yr old grapes and would continue to do so even if I had five children to cut grapes for 🤷🏼‍♀️ if someone is comfortable with the risk and decides to feed certain foods at a younger age, that’s their choice. But to suggest a safety decision should be based on what you can be arsed with because you’ve got more than one child is bizarre.
Anxietyandwine · 29/06/2021 23:27

2yo is not allowed and has never had them, I feel like they’d be hard to chew and just a bad habit to start. 10yo allowed as a treat but it’s a rare occasion, do allow other sweet treats or biscuit or chocolate after dinner (but I’m a savoury person so maybe I’m just mean and not inclined to buy sweet treats!)
