When could your baby crawl?

At what age did your baby start to crawl and how much tummy time did you give them in a day?

DS1 rolled before 4 months, and then spent every second he could on his front. Crawled at 5.5 months.
DS2 just wanted to be with his brother, and crawled before 5 months.... rolled early too.

Ilovecoffee2 · 27/06/2021 17:03

Bum shuffling since 9 months, now 14 months but just started crawling and is standing a lot but still hasn’t taken any steps

AbjectHorror · 27/06/2021 17:06

Commando crawling about eight months then proper hands-and-knees crawling nearer nine months. Just turned one, not walking alone yet but he's playing with balance by letting go and standing alone before lunging towards me Grin

Didn't crawl until about 9 months but then he was up and on his feet after about a month! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Maggiesfarm · 27/06/2021 17:09

Never heard of 'tummy time' 30+ years ago. We'd put babies on their fronts at times and of course they rolled over, but it wasn't a 'thing'.

Both of mine crawled aged six months and one week.

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2021 17:12

Also DS HATED tummy time. Hated it.

Screamed when we tried it. Or when he was able to just climbed so he didnt have to.

Genuinely dont force it.

LucyCC · 27/06/2021 17:12

Crawled at 6.5 months, hated tummy time up to 4 months, she’d spend 3 minutes max on her tummy before face planting the floor and crying then we did a little Zoom course on sensory play , 2 weeks later she learned how to roll like a pro and pretty much wouldn’t stay on her back from then on.

stuckinarutatwork · 27/06/2021 17:13

DC1 7 months
DC2 9 months

Both had several tummy time sessions on the playmat each day.

BertieBotts · 27/06/2021 17:14

Tummy time didn't exist 30 years ago because the recommendation to put them on their fronts to sleep was only just starting to be a thing and it took another 15 years for the lag in development due to this to be identified.

It started to be advised some time in the mid 00s IIRC.

I have 3. All hated ‘tummy time’ and screamed when put in this position so I stopped doing it. None of them crawled - all bum-shuffled (10 months, 11 months and 12 months respectively). All walked late: 15, 21 and 28 months.

Vicky1989x · 27/06/2021 17:26

Army crawled at 10.5 months, on all fours crawling a month later. Hardly any tummy time; she hated it due to reflux.

user848272 · 27/06/2021 17:32

Late crawler here, 11 months. HATES her knees on the floor. Crawls with one knee on the floor and one foot Hmm she liked tummy time when small but grew to hate it. She prefers to be carried by her minions above all else.

Shmithecat2 · 27/06/2021 17:35

Ds crawled at 9/10 months I think. Tummy time didn't really happen, he hated it. Walked at 13mo.

LakeShoreD · 27/06/2021 17:39

Mine never crawled but walked at 9 months. We didn’t do much tummy time as she typically went straight to sleep.

ladygindiva · 27/06/2021 17:48

6 months, 7 months and 9 months. The first two rolled early and insisted on being on their fronts from early on so tonnes of tummy time. Third one wasn't so keen so I didn't push it. Interestingly the later crawler was the earliest to walk at 11 months.

Ah my tummy time refuser also had reflux... Hadn't made the connection.

He's just started crawling at 8 months :)

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 27/06/2021 18:03

DS1 commando belly crawled at 6 months and crawled on hands and knees at 8 months. He did a fair bit of tummy time but that was because he was a winter baby so we were home lots, he rolled quite early so would put himself on his tummy and he enjoyed tummy time, we didn’t have to force it.

DS2 is doing everything stupidly early. I think he just wants to be a big boy and keep up with his brother. He learned to roll back to tummy at 2 months old and would constantly choose to be on his front. Also stuck at home a lot as he’s a lockdown baby. This was a nightmare as he started sleeping on his front very early and we couldn’t stop it, and we had to stop swaddling while he still had the startle reflex. It also made him constantly throw up his milk feeds with pressure on his tummy as he was a very refluxy baby. Anyway, he started commando belly crawling at 5 months and had moved on to hands and knees crawling within five weeks, so six months. Within two weeks of that, he started pulling up. He’s now 7 months and cruising everywhere. But couldn’t sit up until last week, go figure!

I think lots of tummy time has had an impact, but I’ve been lucky to have two babies who didn’t mind doing it. All babies get there, whether or not they do lots of tummy time, and there’s a wide range of normal timescales for hitting milestones and earlier doesn’t mean better or make any real difference generally.

HumphreyCobblers · 27/06/2021 18:05

My baby was the fastest crawler at seven months, he was off like a rocket. Never did tummy time. Now he is 14 he is like a sloth, never voluntarily moving, whereas my best friends baby never crawled and is now a super athlete.

butterflycatcher · 27/06/2021 18:57

My first crawled at 6.5 months but from very young showed a determination to move and constantly rolled onto his tummy from around 4 months as it's where he wanted to be.

My second has hated tummy time and just started crawling from a sitting position at 8.5 months.

Two very different babies with different interests reaching milestones in different orders based on their preferences. It happens. You will find the babies who are slower to develop their gross motor skills will be very good with their fine motor skills and vice versa. There is only so much they can learn at a time.

Mine's similar, up the stairs at six months, riding a bike without stabilisers at barely three. At 15 he does little but read and play D&D Grin.
FizzingWhizzbee123 · 27/06/2021 19:24

@butterflycatcher this is a very good point. DS2 is stubbornly bulldozing through his gross motor milestones but definitely at the deferment of working on his fine motor skills. Where as his baby friend, who can’t roll over properly yet, has amazing pincer grip and a beautiful focus and excitement for stories. I can’t get DS2 to sit still long enough to look at a book 😭 its very easy to miss the fine motor skills and focus on the gross motor milestones.

bloodywhitecat · 27/06/2021 19:26

14 months still can't crawl and isn't pulling to standing yet either.
