The worst nappy rash!

wiggleshasmylife · 18/06/2021 16:45

My dd is 10 months. Shes never had nappy rash but now shes suffering. Its all up her bum and the vulva. Bright red. Clearly itchy and sore. Nappy changes are awful. Shes screaming the house down. Been putting metanium on and sudocrem for the barrier. It's not been helped by shes suddenly having a poo 5 times a day. This is very new for her. And the heat is making her sweaty. Has anyone got any suggestions? Don't really want to see the gp. Getting an appointment is an absolute nightmare as it is!

is she teething?

Floopyandtired · 18/06/2021 16:48

Oh bless her. Sounds awful for both of you. What we found worked was loads of nappy free time and making sure her bum/vulva etc are completely dry before putting a fresh nappy on. We would use wipes as normal then gently pat dry with some loo roll before using metanium. If it doesn’t clear up soon or starts to look infected please take her to the GP, they’re always happy to see babies.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/06/2021 16:48

Lots of nappy free time, it's worth seeing the gp though as it may well be thrush/a fungal infection & they'll be able to prescribe the right cream (I don't think pharmacists can under 2). Dc5(3) suffers awfully from thrush due to allergies & it needs the right cream to clear it up properly, now he's older I keep it in ready.

Cool bath and bare bum.... As long as you dare!!

Bare bum time it is! I'm going to monitor her over the weekend. It's awful to see her in so much discomfort.

If it doesn't get any better I'll phone the gp Monday morning.

I dont know if shes teething. She already has 8 teeth. And I cant look too far in her mouth. She bites. And it hurts.

Would it be better to stop using wet wipes and use a flannel to clean her? A dry one

I'd switch to a damp flannel, followed by patting with a dry one.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 18/06/2021 16:54

No wipes!!

WindFlower92 · 18/06/2021 16:54

Metanium if you haven't already tried!

HDready · 18/06/2021 16:56

Is it the yellow metanium? Agree a damp flannel rather than wipes

Joolsin · 18/06/2021 16:56

Do check out the GP in case she has thrush. But in any case, I completely recommend Caldesene medicated powder, used it for both my DC - it keeps the sore areas dry and helps soothe and heal the irritation. I think it's made in Ireland, not sure if you can buy in the shops in the UK, but it's worth every penny.

wiggleshasmylife · 18/06/2021 16:59

It is the yellow metanium. The skin that is red and inflamed is wet to the touch. I've had to put socks on her hands. She's constantly trying to pull at the skin. It's obviously itchy. I think I'll give the gp a call now

Might be worth changing her nappy brand too.
Our ds2 (now 9) suffered terribly but I remember it clearly! It was awful.
I tried every lotion and potion going, then a lovely health visitor suggested castor and zinc cream (about £1 a pot) and that worked a treat!

wiggleshasmylife · 18/06/2021 17:07

@Bonnyem we use pampers pull ups. Have used pampers since she was born. We had a period of using Fred and flo and little angels but seemed to make her sore. She's absolutely fine in herself.
When it comes to the nappy changes she stiffens up and starts crying. Not even screaming, just crying. It's absolutely breaking my heart hearing her so upset.
Can I give her calpol for this? Sorry I'm a first time mum and Google had sent me on a scary rabbit hole

Could well be thrush. A pharmacist may be able to advise and if so, try a mild antifungal cream. A combination of clotrimazole (generic Canesten) and yellow metanium (spread very thinly, don't be tempted to slap a thick layer on) worked for us every time.

stuckinarutatwork · 18/06/2021 17:24

And yes, give her Calpol (or even liquid ibuprofen which is an anti-inflammatory) for the pain.

winnieanddaisy · 18/06/2021 17:25

Many years ago my son had bad nappy rash . I tried all the creams that I could find but for some reason I tried calamine lotion , which did the trick . I've no idea why it worked but it did . I just wanted to cool his red skin down .

stuckinarutatwork · 18/06/2021 17:27

Clean her with damp cotton wool balls. Wet wipes will sting like hell and a dry flannel will be too abrasive. You can use the flannel to dab (not rub) her dry and then let the air get to it for as long as possible before putting the nappy back on.

bunnytheegghunter · 18/06/2021 17:36

Don't use wet wipes I used warm water and cotton wool on mine if they were sore, lots of free happy time and maybe try some thrush cream, it sounds like she could have thrush rather than nappy rash.

Mammaaof · 18/06/2021 17:38

Are you sure it's not thrush op?

wiggleshasmylife · 18/06/2021 17:42

How would I know the difference between thrush and nappy rash? Her bum and vulva are bright red. She screams when there touched. And shes constantly at her self. Trying to scratch. I really don't want to Google.

Pull-ups are supposed to feel a bit damper when wet to encourage potty training. I’d try standard nappies and see if it helps. Poor thing, hope it resolves soon

ChuckMater · 18/06/2021 17:48

Bepanthen instead of sudocrem for barrier cream.
Metanium after poos
Cool plain water baths
Lots of nappy free time on towels / garden etc to save your carpets
Speak to pharmacist or GP

notapizzaeater · 18/06/2021 17:49

My son s horrific nappy rash was thrush. Can you send a photo to your surgery for them to look.

LemonLemonLemon · 18/06/2021 17:50

We had this from pampers nappies - have you changed brands at all?

winniesanderson · 18/06/2021 17:50

Water wipes are fantastic when little ones have nappy rash. That or water and cotton wool. And then I used to dry the area with muslin squares. If it's not shifting with the yellow metanium I'd definitely want to get it looked at.
