The worst nappy rash!

My dd is 10 months. Shes never had nappy rash but now shes suffering. Its all up her bum and the vulva. Bright red. Clearly itchy and sore. Nappy changes are awful. Shes screaming the house down. Been putting metanium on and sudocrem for the barrier. It's not been helped by shes suddenly having a poo 5 times a day. This is very new for her. And the heat is making her sweaty. Has anyone got any suggestions? Don't really want to see the gp. Getting an appointment is an absolute nightmare as it is!

@notapizzaeater so i filled out the online gp consultation form. And there was a section for pictures but not of genitals or the bum or we can be banned from the practice. So no they don't have a photo. I cant explain how bad it looks. It's not just red. The skin is red and inflamed. Shes wet around her bum and vulva. The skin feels rough and so hot. And it has that shiny wet look. I have eczema so can well imagine how she feels.
I'll put her back into normal nappies

When DS1 had fungal nappy rash, Cannesten cleared it up. I did a Google images search for fungal nappy rash at the time and it wasn't awful as it came up from medical sites. I usually have safe search on though.

DS2 had a different raw nappy rash and nothing shifted it. I could have cried at the people telling me to try yellow metanium and not believing that it didn't make a difference. In the end my Dr rang the pediatric unit at the hospital and the nurse there told us to mix equal amounts of vaseline, yellow metanium and orabase and the combination of the three somehow worked and healed it amazingly quickly.

Off the NHS Site ....

Other rashes in the nappy area
If the rash doesn't go away or your baby develops a persistent bright red, moist rash with white or red pimples that spreads into the folds of their skin, they may have an infection.
Ask your pharmacist or health visitor for advice. The pharmacist may recommend a cream for you to use.
If the rash is severe, take your baby to the GP who may prescribe cream or medicine. Follow your GP's instructions on whether and when to apply barrier cream as well as the prescribed cream.
It's normal for babies to develop skin rashes, but it's important to know the difference between a minor irritation and a condition that requires attention.

Go to Boots and ask for Canesten nappy cream.

This is the only the by that worked on my DD and the local pharmacist only suggested sudocreme or a visit for the GP

You need cavillon spray from Amazon. Bloody brilliant and the only thing that ever
Healed my dds horrific nappy rash (think cracked and bleeding skin)
It’s awesome stuff.

TheWashingMachine · 18/06/2021 20:29

Once you've cleaned with cotton will and water, pat dry and then totally dry with a hair drier on the cold setting. Nappy free where possible, metamniun when in a nappy. Also my mum thought cloth nappies would help and they did as some disposables are very chemically. They did. DS literally had huge bleeding wounds on his bottom, it was because he was allergic to dairy. 10 years on and I still feel bad thinking about how sore it must've been.

MummyE87 · 18/06/2021 20:53

Don't use baby wipes, water and flannel and dry one to pat dry.

My son had thrush and I just went to the pharmacy and asked for the 1% caneston cream. 2 days it was completely gone.

Hope this is allowed but I have attached a link to the cream, you can buy it over the counter, perhaps explain to he situation to the pharmacist and see if they can give you any advice

Hope your LO feels better soon

No no no... This stuff stings horrendously on broken skin & I'm fairly sure mustn't be used on the genitals. Glad it worked for you but just .... no

My child had diarrhoea, which resulted in a very sore bum. We ended up at A&E and the nurse advised putting their bum under the sink and letting the water wash the poo/wee off. Then using your hand to splash the water on and gently use your hand to wipe the bum. Then letting it air dry before patting with a towel and putting the nappy on. We went from a child who was really distressed at having their bum cleaned, as it was so sore, to bring their normal self and it cleared the soreness up very quickly. Good luck

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 18/06/2021 22:05

Cavilon also worked incredibly well for us in a similar situation with nappy rash and superimposed infection after HFM. Didn’t seem to sting at all but enabled me to use both the prescribed cream and also create a barrier on top without one disturbing the other. I love the stuff,

Szyz2020 · 18/06/2021 22:28

Your poor DD Sad

Some skin doesn’t tolerate metanium very well, but because it’s so brilliant for most its hard to think that might be the problem. If it’s not thrush or even if it is and you get things under control try Mustela products. DS had horrendous red raw nappy rash which was caused or exacerbated by metanium. Mustela got things back under control.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 18/06/2021 22:36

Why don't you take her to see a pharmacist tomorrow? Will be quicker than GP. I needed Canestan for my dd's thrush and was able to get some prescribed by the pharmacist. It may only have been possible as she'd had some before, but I'm sure they'd be able to recommend something.

NEE1302 · 18/06/2021 22:40

My daughter had horrendous nappy rash due to CMPA, which was making her urine acidic and it was burning her skin and she had raw open blisters and we really struggled to clear it up.

Sudocrem, we discovered, can make nappy rash worse as it's designed to dry the area and can take the skin off. Metanium was the same.

My health visitor recommended a layer of bepanthen and then a really thick layer of hydromol ointment over the top and it cleared up really quickly.

Wordup19 · 19/06/2021 17:13

My LO had terrible nappy rash, turned out she was allergic to the chemicals they put in some brands. Consider changing brands, no more wet wipes and plenty of air. My LO was also allergic to metanium and bepathen.

Pregnantandanxious · 20/06/2021 07:47

How has the area responded to metanium? I only ask because my baby had the most horrendous nappy rash - as in they were talking about us being referred to a consultant at the local hospital because of it.

I was using yellow metanium but suddenly realised it was making it loads worse and my baby was having a terrible reaction to it which was essentially burning the skin.

I stopped using it, did LOADS of nappy off time (2 hours off, one hour one x 3 a day), I stopped using wipes and instead used cotton wool pads in water and patted dry with a muslin. I used bepanthin as a barrier cream. This combination finally worked - this was after trying numerous creams prescribed by the doctor.

wildeverose · 20/06/2021 19:50

If her skin is wet to touch and inflamed you need to take her to out of ours, it sounds infected.

ohwerehalfwaythere · 20/06/2021 19:53

Use reusable baby wipes. My son never had nappy rash again after we switched. Cheeky Wipes are fab

MySocalledLoaf · 20/06/2021 19:58

Can you take a picture of the rash and crop out or cover up the parts of the photo thst wouldn’t be allowed, just to show the extent and redness of the rash?

glasshalfsomething · 20/06/2021 20:07

@wiggleshasmylife - try another cream. Metanium was the worst thing for my DD. Switched brands and it sorted itself out.
