Rash on baby

KM38 · 24/05/2021 09:22

6.5months old. Has had this rash on his back for just over 2 weeks now getting gradually worse, then a bit better, then a bit worse etc. Doesn’t seem to be causing him any discomfort at all. There’s now a few spots starting to creep round his sides and on to his belly. Occasional few on his chin, neck, behind ears too. It’s raised and bumpy to touch.

Has anyone experienced similar? Took him to the GP last week to get it checked as it hadn’t gone away - GP viewed it from across the room, must have been at least 3m away, didn’t touch it etc 🙄 asked no questions about it and just told me it’s dry skin 🤔
I questioned if it could be an allergy as it appeared a couple of days after I introduced cows milk into his solid foods but was told 100% not.
Absolutely nothing else has been changed. Same washing detergents, soaps etc since he was born and no previous skin issues.

Can you post a picture of here? Or take him to a pharmacist.

KM38 · 24/05/2021 10:48

@Fitforforty silly me! I thought I’d attached the pictures!!

Do you use a moisturiser on him after bath? If so which one?

Usual skin reaction to dairy products look more like hives. And also more around face/mouth/swelling etc.

Doesn’t look like the rash from my girls CMPA. You can always not give him cow milk for 6 weeks to see what happens.

User0ne · 24/05/2021 11:07

My husband gets eczema rashes but only when he eats lots of lactose. He seems to be ok with cheese (low lactose) but if he even has dairy milk in 1 cup of tea/coffee his eczema flares up.

Similarly Ds2 used to reliably puke after milk or yoghurt (high lactose) but was fine with hard cheese. He grew out of it around 2yrs old.

Maybe try cutting out the dairy and reintroduce slowly with low lactose foods. If that doesn't work consider changing washing products (personal and clothes)

@QwertyGirly @Fitforforty @User0ne knew it didn’t look like a typical CMPA rash so wasn’t sure if it was just coincidence that it appeared after cows milk was introduced. I have queried a milk intolerance in the past but been told no - it’s always the same doctor though. Bit of back history incase it’s relevant:

  • EBF until 3m then hit rough patch (screaming crying on the boob and pulling head away) - I was sure it was due to supply drop as I could feel that I wasn’t as full as usual and when I tried to express I was getting very little despite having been getting loads prior. DS dropped 75-25th centile. Doctor said silent reflux. Complete breast refusal by DS so almost done myself in exclusively expressing to get enough milk for him. Supply went completely so moved to formula.
  • On formula the “silent reflux” changed to actual reflux - I questioned possible CMPA but was told no.
  • Reflux got worse - doctor prescribed infant gaviscon - played havoc with DSs belly so doctor advised anti reflux formula
  • Still sick but not as sick so doctor decided that was him fine.
  • Now started weaning - first 2 weeks single veg was fine - introduced cows milk in cooking and reflux started to get worse and rash appeared. So far only had milk and cheese.
  • Have removed dairy just now to see if there’s any difference.

Am I going mad here? The doctor looks at me like I’m a crazy mother 🙈 Could the BF issue have been supply drop all along and the reflux has been caused by an intolerance to the formula?! Then the addition of whole cows milk has brought on the rash?

@QwertyGirly Use moisturiser every other day or so - have always used Aveeno products or organic coconut oil since he was 6weeks old. Used no products before that. And we’ve used the same washing detergent since before he was born for all his clothes and bedding and our own. Never had an issue until now. Neither DH or I wear perfumes or aftershaves at the moment either

Speak to a different GP and ask for a trial of non dairy formula. Join the Facebook group CMPA. Don’t give any foods containing soya during this time.

DD1 was diagnosed with CMPA at 11 months after weeks of months of us questioning it.

QwertyGirly · 24/05/2021 13:06

The only way to know is to cut all cows dairy products for a few weeks as suggested above.

Be careful when introducing foods like nuts, fish, eggs. Keep a diary.

KM38 · 24/05/2021 13:15

@Fitforforty @QwertyGirly Yeah I’m going to give them a call again tomorrow morning and ask for another GP. I’m just not convinced that there’s not something else going on! And I’m reluctant to introduce more allergens while he’s got a rash!

@KM38 my nearly 8 month old has a very similar looking rash! She's had it on and off for a good few months... her skin is fairly dry so I've just put it down to eczema but I've also debated possible cmpa. She's also got reflux for which we used Gaviscon but I did try to wean her off that at 6 months (thinking that weaning would naturally improve it) I've noticed a slight improvement but she is still sicky.

Did you get any further with the GP?

@Mumtogirls90 Sorry your little one is going through similar 😓 no further with the GP unfortunately! In all honesty, they’ve been completely useless 🙄 no other GP will see him until I’ve tried the cream that the first GP gave for at least 2 weeks (they’ve given Diprobase 🙄). They’ve been useless with their advice too.

the rash on DSs back has cleared slightly, although still flaring up in patches. It’s now more obvious on his tummy and round his neck and in his wee elbow creases and armpits. Doesn’t seem to be causing him any discomfort but does flare up and down. Although, I’ve been keeping a diary since he started weaning and can’t seem to see any clear link to food. Had him completely off dairy for a week then tried a small amount of yoghurt one day and slightly more the next day and didn’t seem to have any effect on him at all.

Everything I’ve read online, including info from NHS tells me that babies with eczema are more prone to food allergy, as are babies with a history of allergy or asthma in the family (I have severe hay fever and a bad unknown food allergy. DH has bad hay fever and asthma runs in his family, although he doesn’t have it). The GPs have told me there’s no link and just to introduce allergens as normal - he’s no higher risk apparently 🙄🤔 Just going to introduce things gradually and build up from small amounts. Started eggs yesterday so will work on that this week.

Not a healthcare professional but that looks like mild eczema, especially with your description of it appearing around armpits and creases etc and feeling a bit raised and bumpy.
Have the same eczema rash (GP had a good look at it recently and confirmed mild eczema) with our LO and have found that Aveeno Baby emollient in her bath water every night and then Aveeno baby moisturiser all over once she's dried after the bath has worked a treat at clearing it up.

Thanks @Riggles78! I’m pretty sure I’ve ruled out allergy with it now being in the creases - GP says it’s just “dry skin and general irritation”, not eczema 🙄 but I’m pretty sure it’s an eczema rash like you say!! I’ll grab some of the Aveeno bath emollient to try it too 😊 I don’t suppose your LO is at weaning age? Everything I’m reading online says to take advice from your GP about allergens if baby has eczema but my GP just isn’t interested 🙄

@KM38 She's 3.5 months so not ready for weaning yet, sorry can't help there!
Sorry your GP hasn't been much help, very frustrating!

Riggles78 · 01/06/2021 17:49

@KM38 Oh and just as a warning, the emollient makes the baby super slippery when you try and a get them out the bath 😂

October2020 · 01/06/2021 17:51

It's baby eczema, is there a reason you don't want to try diprobase? That pretty much cured my baby's eczema...

@October2020 No not at all! I’ve been using it on him daily but it doesn’t seem to be helping at all. The doctors here hand diprobase out for everything

@KM38
I could have written your post exactly in regard to the rash and weaning.
My LO is 6 months old and in the last 2 weeks we've introduced veggies and baby porridge.
Since this he started with a rash round his neck and on his back that then spread round to his tummy and will come and go. We've been battling the rash for almost 3 weeks now. GP is totally useless. Did you ever get to the bottom of your LO's rash?

BlueberryLane · 17/02/2022 19:36

My 8 month old has recently developed a rash on his back. It’s patchy and bumpy. He doesn’t seem bothered by it at all. I’ve introduced allergens fine. Been about two weeks… starting to look a bit like eczema?

OLR92 · 17/02/2022 19:54

@BlueberryLane looks almost identical to my sons who is 6 months. We have recently started weaning so I've eliminated dairy for now as it was in the cow and gate baby porridge I was giving him and just using Childs Farm moisturiser twice daily but at the minute it doesn't seem to be making a difference!

I did think it may be the weather if you are UK based. Cold outside and then the heating on indoors could have flared up eczema. GP is also baffled! It has been nearly 3 weeks for us!

OLR92 · 17/02/2022 19:56

Forgot to attatch a picture Confused

Feeling83 · 17/02/2022 20:08

Hi just wanted to say that my DS who has CMPA and eczema and other food allergies has exactly this type of rash when exposed to any of his delayed onset allergens. Hives will only appear if the reaction to the allergen is immediate.
I really hope it isn’t CMPA!

OLR92 · 17/02/2022 20:25

Thank you @Feeling83
I'm sort of beginning to think it may be this. Can I ask, what other allergens does your son have? It all seems a little scary Confused

BlueberryLane · 17/02/2022 20:29

I didn’t think of the weather! At first I thought it was a sweat rash from when he is in the car seat, because it is just his back?

Yep, I’m based in the UK. I’ll keep an eye on it :)
