My ds is 3.5 and still has a nappy at night. I have bought the pull up type and told him that he has to pull this type of nappy down and wee in the toilet before bed, in the morning, etc He does this, but his nappy is still soaked in the morning. I limit his drinks in the afternoon but he does have a cup of milk before bed

He is obviously not ready to abandon the nappy yet, but was just curious about your dc,s ages.

DD 18 months

DS - 2years, but then he had major accident and broke his leg, so this set him back into nappies. So I'd guess he was about 3.5 before totally dry at night.

hamkin · 17/11/2007 00:40

How did you go about stopping using nappies at night? did you wait unti they had dry nappies in the morning for a few nights before stopping using them, or just try one night?

If he falls asleep in the car (even for a couple of hours on long trips), etc, he does not wee himself. Obviously night time is a lot longer than 2 hours, though!

My DS was Eight and a Half before he was dry through the Night and Five befre he was dry throught the Day.

seeker · 17/11/2007 07:16

dd 4.5, ds 5.5.

I would suggest that you don't limit drink though, it's supposed to make it harder for them to be dry, Hang on, there's a link somewhere.......

OK the website doesn't seem to be working at the moment but it's an organization called ERIC. I heard someone on Woman'd Hour talking about it and it sounds brilliant.

DANCESwithHughJackman · 17/11/2007 07:22

ds 2.6
dd 3.6 ish

DS just stopped wetting in the night as soon as he potty trained. DD had SOAKING nappies for months and months.

mckenzie · 17/11/2007 07:46

DS was 2.75ish and I hadn't realised that you didn't stop the night time nappies at the same time as the daytime nappies so it was just a fluke.

DD was only just 2 and like Cat64, we just forgot to put a nappy on her one night and she was dry so we didn't use them again.

Nemo2007 · 17/11/2007 07:48

DS was 2.6yrs he decided about 3mths after being dry in the day. Up until that point he still had soaking nappies but admitted he wet in them because he knew he had it on.

DD1 is 23m and we just started using potty so will wait a while to try her at night.

Nemo2007 · 17/11/2007 07:50

will add have never limited drinks at all for ds and wont for dd1.

CaptainCaveman · 17/11/2007 08:12

like cat64, dh forgot to put ds' pull-ups on one night and he stayed dry. He was 2.8.

Some folk suggest lifting your lo out of bed to pee just before you go to bed yourself. This worked for a friend of mine.

dneice is 5 and wears pullups, always soaking in the morning.

paddingtonbear1 · 17/11/2007 08:19

dd was just over 4.
we do lift her before we go to bed, which has usually worked. not sure when we stop doing this tho!

lomond · 17/11/2007 08:21

DD1 was 3.2, think she was ready at 3.1 but we had a holiday coming up and wanted to wait until we were back.

To be honest I think she was just using the nappy in the morning because it was there instead of going to the bathroom.

Crocky · 17/11/2007 08:35

Dd the week after she was 2. Her decision to stop wearing them.
Ds is 7 and has never had a dry night.
Both perfectly normal.

NellyTheElephant · 17/11/2007 09:27

DD1 2.7 (a few months after potty trained). She still had soaking wet nappies most mornings, but I felt certain it was because she was weeing just after she woke up as she knew she had the nappy on. I decided to see what happened if I left the nappy off for a couple of days. I had a matress protector on but in addition used pampers bedmats and had a spare sheet available in case of needing a quick change in the night, but she was basically fine from day 1. In the three months since then she has had 2 accidents, both of which were about a week after she started going nappy free at night.

Regarding limiting drinks, my rule is that I only offer water after about 3pm, as she guzzles juice but will only drink enough water so as to quench her thirst.

You could try without a nappy for a couple of nights and if no luck give it another go in 6 weeks or so. My point is that they may well be ready before you start getting a dry nappy in the morning, at this age they are not stupid and know if the nappy is on and will use it for convenience.

Hulababy · 17/11/2007 09:38

DD was dry during the day from 24 months. Until she turned 4 she was rarely dry at night. She wore reuseable bed pants. At 4yo she refused to wear them any more but was still not consistently dry. We bought two bed mats from Mothercare which are fab. She is now 5y7m and still has the odd accident,

If DD has anything to drink other than plain water from about 3pm onwards she is vry liable to wet.

Waking her at our bedtime has very little effect on her likelyhood of being dry.

If she is over excited or anxious she is more likely to wet, often linked with a night terror.

If sh is over tired and sleeps very heavily she may wet also.

IME night time training is something you can do very little about. You can't train them. It isn't like day time. No matter how much DD has wanted to be dry all the time - and she has wanted to be since about 3yo or earier - she can't help it.

There is a hormone that kicks in usually between the age of 18 months and 7 years. Until this kicks in there is little you can do. A doctor will not consider it an issue until the child is 7 usually.

Don't worry about it. Play it all down, try every so oftenand they will eventually get it.

LongMeg · 17/11/2007 09:52

Dd was almost six and a half - two months ago - having been dry since she was two and a half.

Hula is right - there is little you can do until the anti-diuretic hormone kicks in which suppresses urination overnight.

Limiting drinks during the afternoon can actually make matters worse - the bladder adjusts to taking in less fluid which can lead to it not being able to hold onto urine overnight. Make sure he has plenty of water during the day - all through the day - as this can help the bladder hold a bigger amount. The things to limit (in fact, ban completely) in the evening are fizzy drinks and blackcurrant drinks, as these stimulate the kidneys and increase urine production.

The ERIC website that seeker suggested has lots of useful leaflets and information - it's here

juuule · 17/11/2007 10:37

My earliest to be dry at night was just 2yo and my latest was 9y+

pigsinmud · 17/11/2007 13:34

Ds1 was about 3.5 - about a year after he was dry in the day.
Ds2 was 2.6 - same time as dry in day although he went back in them when he broke his leg at 2.9!
Dd1 ? She is 3.10 and has a cloth nappy every night - really doesn't want to go without it even though it's dry 13 nights out of 14. The few nights we have tried without a nappy she wets the bed! So not sure about that one. Not pressurising her as it's no hassle. Never limited drinks or lifted to the loo at 11pm. I think if you need to do that then they need a nappy.
Dd2 still in nappies as she's only 1.5.

widgypog · 17/11/2007 20:02

my dd 3.11 was fairly late to potty train (2.10) and has only just become dry at night. I went with the softly softly approach and waited till she was dry most nights , then asked her if she wanted to keep wearing them and she said no, so I bought a waterproof sheet and a special torch to help her find the bathroom at night...and volia she is dry.

I thought it would never happen as all her friends have been dry at night for ages but I found they will do it in their own time

LIZS · 17/11/2007 20:07

Both almost 4, just decided one day.

eandh · 17/11/2007 20:10

dd1 is having her 1st night without a nappy (see why I was lurking on this topic!) shes 3.3 and been dry 5 out of 7 mornings this week and was very keen on not wearing a nappy/pull up tonight so fingers crossed (she was dry in the day at 23months)

Troutpout · 17/11/2007 20:14

ds was 2 years and 3 months
dd was 19 months

Tommy · 17/11/2007 20:26

DS2 was 3.8 and has never had an accident

DS1 is 5.10 and still has a soaked nappy every morning.

I also realised that unless Huggies were making nappies just for him, it must be pretty common

larkspur · 17/11/2007 20:33

Ds was dry just before he was 7.
