Baby ate salty chips

paranoidmum311 · 07/05/2021 18:36

My baby/toddler ate 4 chips off my plate earlier when we were out for lunch. I didn’t think anything of it until I tasted them myself and realized they were extremely salty! I feel terrible as he’s only 12 months. Could I have harmed his kidneys?

He’s over a year anyway, he’ll be fine. Extra water so he doesn’t wake up at night thirsty, maybe.

bloodywhitecat · 07/05/2021 19:07

@alexdgr8

i'd just give him extra milk and/or water, and not much else to eat until lunch tomorrow. maybe some fruit.
Feel free to ignore that mad bit of 'advice'.

Your baby will be just fine OP.

wildeverose · 07/05/2021 19:15

My ds has eaten a snail, a moth which he plucked from the air, soil, sand, some old cement, the list goes on - I promise he will be fine op.

And please ignore the advice not to feed him until lunch tomorrow - baffled at that.

Why would you not feed your child?
Seriously if this is the ‘worst’ he’s eaten relax!
Feed him as normal!

AgathaAllAlong · 07/05/2021 19:24

OP Please please feed your child as normal tonight! I think that poster is having you on.

He will be absolutely fine, at 12 months they can eat what we can. I wouldn't now go mad with the salt but I promise you that it is a tiny amount and he will be fine. Extra water or milk if he wants it, food as normal after that.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 07/05/2021 19:31

Seconding all of this, please feed your child!

Just give him extra drinks. He’ll be okay Smile

Crimblecrumble1990 · 07/05/2021 19:32

I think the guidance is that they are allowed some salt over 1 anyway? Make sure he has water but he really is completely fine.

My MIL used to just whizz up their salt laden meals to give to my husband when he was a baby as it just wasn't that well known back then not to and he is absolutely fine :)

GintyMcGinty · 07/05/2021 19:34

He will be absolutely fine. Honestly. Breathe.

paranoidmum311 · 07/05/2021 19:36

Thanks everyone. Yes I’m a first time mum with a massive tendency to overthink things - as you can probably tell! Glad to hear that the chips won’t do him any harm Smile

The guidance for 1-3yr olds is up to 2g salt a day. That’s a huge amount in loose salt. A teaspoon is 5g.
I appreciate they will have had some in bread or cereal or cheese already, but the amount on chips will be smaller than you think.

VioletCharlotte · 07/05/2021 19:40

Mine had the occasional chicken nugget happy meal when he was 12 months (this was the early noughties though, when people were more lax about this sort of thing!

Why?
SummerHouse · 07/05/2021 19:48

This is bad. You can offset it with one or two bottles of beer. He will be thirsty! Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 07/05/2021 19:58

My 15 month old ate half the contents of a felix pouch. 16 odd years ago, she beamed like that cat who got the cream.

NiceGerbil · 07/05/2021 19:59

No it's fine.

My toddler ate a snail. Crunched and swallowed Grin

Yummymummy2020 · 07/05/2021 20:06

He will be totally fine don’t worry!!! It’s only dangerous if he eats a lot of salt constantly and the fact he is older too is even better! Try not to think about it anymore!!!

LOL.
Mysterian · 07/05/2021 20:09

Give them some lager and they'll be fine.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/05/2021 20:14

He'll be fine!!

DD's first food (at around 5 months Blush) was some pizza crust she snaffled off my plate. Salty chips came shortly afterwards - she grabbed a handful and shoved them into her mouth before I could stop her.

She's a thriving 9 yo now. Smile

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/05/2021 20:16

@Bach3lorBoi

My 12 month old ate a flower, a feather, a sticker, and a lump of soil today.

I sound negligent, but honestly I'm pretty helicopter as a mum. These things just happen. And yet our kids survive :)

A few salty chips will be fine! May just feel a tad more thirsty :)

Be grateful it was a foodstuff ;)

DS ate a buttercup as a toddler. I didn't realised till he handed me the empty stalk and announced he was "ninished."

ZooKeeper19 · 07/05/2021 21:06

Another mum of a child that survived despite eating cat toilet stones and drinking from a gutter in a stable.

@BowserJr the pram wheels get licked as well, wonder if there is a toddler manual for them somewhere that says they must do this...

dopeyduck · 07/05/2021 21:09

Thought you were going to say it was their first taste of food or something. Crikey if that's the worst thing your 12 month old has ever eaten then I really wouldn't worry.

DS ate soil last weekend. Like from a field. Soil.

13579db · 07/05/2021 21:15

If u can give him some banana -

Bananas counteract the effect of too much salt
(Bananas have potassium, salt is sodium, they are opposites)

Level75 · 07/05/2021 21:15

I love these threads, they're so predictable.
The answer is always 'your baby/toddler/child will be fine'.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 07/05/2021 21:17

Don't worry, won't do them any harm! DD picked mud off the pram wheels and ate it the other day
