Is it normal i honestly don’t mind as long as he’s happy. Its all he talks about, watches jurrasic world and plays it on ps4.
His dad says he shouldn’t be into dinosaurs at his age and wants him to start playing some different games etc..
ds is not into sports at all.

My dh is still a big Jurassic park fan.

In fact, there is such a fan base that collectible items sell for £££

Let the boy enjoy his dinosaurs

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 29/04/2021 14:24

Oh let him enjoy being 9.

He will grow up soon enough-unlikely that he will take a dino duvet cover to Uni-but even if he does it's fine!!!!

BertieBotts · 29/04/2021 14:24

Maybe he's a budding palaeontologist!

Eh? Some people spend their entire careers looking at dinosaurs.

Ballbagisnotmyname · 29/04/2021 14:29

My daughter is 10 and loves them along with fossils! We have to fossil hunt if we go anywhere new, her ultimate goal is to find a fossil of a dinosaur- definitely a budding archeologist in the making!

Newusertothis · 29/04/2021 14:30

Thanks everyone

My 8yo still loves her dinosaurs. Over the last few years she's wanted to be a paleontologist, an adventurer and now an inventor, but dinosaurs are her big love.

Her obsession has matured over the years... She isn't dressing up and shouting Raarr now. She's reading books and looking for fossils. Her dinosaurs toys are more decorative pieces than something to play with.

321Backintheroom · 29/04/2021 14:37

My son is 11 and still plays with his Dinosaurs . Let them be children ... I’m sure it will change when my son attends secondary school but I am in no way going to tell him he’s too old to have imaginary play with his dinosaurs and other animal figures .

MedusasBadHairDay · 29/04/2021 14:37

Seems totally normal to me. Is there something specific his dad thinks he should be interested in instead?

Moondust001 · 29/04/2021 14:37

@BertieBotts

Maybe he's a budding palaeontologist!
Not a joke though. My nephew, now 13, has never grown out of it either. He is currently studying online with a Canadian university degree modules in palaeontology! He was admitted two years ago on an exceptional gifted student basis. He even has some exemptions on written work and is able to submit verbal assessments instead because his verbal skills on the subject are beyond his current written literacy level. If he continues as is, increasing his written assessments etc, he will have his first degree by the time he is 16/17. Not all prodigies are in maths!

OP, be grateful that he has an interest. Your husband might like him to have different interests, but he's not a mini "him" - your DS is his own person with his own interests.

I think David Attenborough is still massively in to dinosaurs. And he’s 94.
Grin

DadJoke · 29/04/2021 14:38

I still love dinosaurs. Let him have fun.

CagneyNYPD · 29/04/2021 14:38

So he's 8 and into dinosaurs. Perfectly normal. And a great way in for reading information books etc.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 29/04/2021 14:39

Not to mention Ross Geller.... ok maybe not Grin

Figgygal · 29/04/2021 14:39

Christ my 45 year old husband still has an encyclopaedic knowledge of dinosaurs

If your nine-year-old was still into PAW Patrol they might have raised an eyebrow but not dinosaurs

Newusertothis · 29/04/2021 14:42

Thanks
I know I love him and want him to enjoy what he enjoys
His dad thinks hes been into dinosaurs for too long and non of his friends are or boys in his class they’re all playing football or fortnite
He doesn’t want him to be seen as odd or singled out

Tambora · 29/04/2021 14:47

If it was In The Night Garden he might have a point. But dinosaurs? Of course it's normal.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2021 14:49

He doesn’t want him to be seen as odd or singled out

How depressing. Children shouldn't be unique, or interested in different things. They should be homogeneous little clones. Football loving clones.

Nope. More dinosaurs. Take him to see more exhibits, have holidays to Drumheller to see the UNESCO site. Dinosaurs are awesome. Football on the other hand... yawn.

HosannainExcelSheets · 29/04/2021 15:04

I'm 40. I still love dinosaurs, and have done all my life.

Admittedly I am autistic, but I don't see anything wrong with a really strong interest. It makes me really happy learning more about dinosaurs, reading about them, watching documentaries and films about them. Why would you try to redirect someone's passionate interest in such a great subject :)?

m0therofdragons · 29/04/2021 15:06

Dd is 9 and obsessed with narwhals her twin is a massive pig fan. I think it’s normal.

weegiemum · 29/04/2021 15:09

I'm 50 and, after Volcanoes, dinosaurs are up ther3as one of my favourite things. I studied Geography and Geology at university and became a teacher.

Nothing wrong with loving dinosaurs and fossils etc at any age.

Persipan · 29/04/2021 15:13

Has his dad heard of paleontologists?

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2021 15:15

Depressingly, I think girls are allowed.
ladymalfoy45 · 29/04/2021 15:15

Does Dad want to spend more time gaming and say he’s bonding with your DS?

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/04/2021 15:17

So many people think their children have to rush through the stages of growing up at a uniform (and accelerated, these days) rate.
9 is still a little kid, leave him be.
