Is it normal i honestly don’t mind as long as he’s happy. Its all he talks about, watches jurrasic world and plays it on ps4.
His dad says he shouldn’t be into dinosaurs at his age and wants him to start playing some different games etc..
ds is not into sports at all.

I love "massive pig fan" Grin. Fair play to her.

That’s amazing !! What a star ⭐️

KillerFlamingo · 29/04/2021 15:27

He sounds awesome! Dinosaurs are far more interesting than football or fortnite.

I do get what your DH is saying though about wanting him to fit in, I worry about my DS that way as he is not into the same things as his peers. I completely support him being who he is but it's certainly not the easiest path in life.

I'm a 28 year old woman who's dinosaur obsession began around age 4/5 when I watched Jurassic Park I was determined to be an archaeologist or something to do with palaeontology, geology is also fascinating but it's now more of a hobbie than a career but still love dinosaurs just as much as I did then.
I have massive text books on geology that my kids now read if anything he's just going to end up with a brilliant knowledge of earths history.

Iheartmysmart · 29/04/2021 15:55

Blimey, I’m 53 and watched Jurassic World for the umpteenth time last night wearing my sequinned dinosaur t-shirt I made myself! If dinosaurs were around now I’d so have one as a pet.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 29/04/2021 16:16

My DD is late 20's and her DP is early 30's....they have a 4ft model T-Rex (called Marc), in their living room. They bought it when they first moved in together 6 years ago. They also (pre-covid), had a very active social life and have lots of friends.

mogtheexcellent · 29/04/2021 16:24

I'm 49 and have adored dinosaurs all my life. Which explains my career in archaeology. Grin

Have you got a Young Archaeologists Club nearby. might be worth enrolling him?

Your DH is an idiot. not everyone likes or wants computer games.

For all those out there who love dinosaurs its not to late to retrain. I didnt do paelontology in the end as I switched to Anglo Saxon burials but I studied archaeology in my 30s after a decade in office admin. Smile

CoalCraft · 29/04/2021 16:51

I'm 26 and I still think dinos are cool.

Who knows, maybe this passion will continue into adulthood and become a profession. He wouldn't be the first successful paleontologist that started off as a 9 year old T. rex enthusiast.

Neighneigh · 29/04/2021 16:56

I'd be planning a trip to Dorset! Definitely worth encouraging him in an interest that could take him around the world in a fascinating career. Or just enjoying them, whatever he likes. As for the rest of his class being into Fortnite, well. The further you are from that, the better.

percheron67 · 29/04/2021 17:00

What is wrong with that? It could be a career thing. Dinosaurs are not "made up" to appeal to children. Time to worry if he starts research in how to make crystal meth!

TheWeeDonkey · 29/04/2021 18:16

Oh you're making me feel very nostalgic OP. My boy is al(most) grown up now and he loved dinosaurs as a child too. There's plenty of time for him to be stuck in his room playing FIFA or whatever, I very strongly believe that as parents encouraging our children to be themselves helps them to grow into stable happy adults.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 29/04/2021 18:20

I love dinosaurs! Love Jurassic films too. Dd5 not into dinosaurs, obsessed with space though Confused

Dinosauraddict · 29/04/2021 18:53

I got a fossil for my 30th birthday. It was my fav present.

CrotchetyQuaver · 29/04/2021 18:54

My DD is 27 and still loves dinosaurs! She's never grown out of it. I wouldn't worry.

PerspicaciousGreen · 29/04/2021 21:42

Sounds lovely to me, your dad's being silly.

PferdeMerde · 29/04/2021 21:49

Your husband sounds like the odd one. Does he regularly belittle his son? Just let your child like dinosaurs fgs

Your son is his own individual human being, he is not a miniature you.

lovelsa · 30/04/2021 10:35

In this day and age, there are soooo many worse things that a kid could be into than dinosaurs. If he is happy, then let him enjoy them! x

GreatestSh0wUnicorn · 30/04/2021 10:50

Leave him
To his dinosaurs no way would I be introducing a 9yo to fortnight when I hear all the issues people have with it. I have a friend whose 10yo is obsessed with dinosaurs (the level of the obsession means people think he must be autistic) it’s all he is interested about.

surreymum89 · 30/04/2021 10:59

I actually came across some research (can't remember where now) about a link between children's obsession with dinosaurs and higher intelligence, google it! So I wouldn't worryGrin

Honestly I think his dad sounds like a bit of a moron. He will do a lot more damage trying to get him interested in football and sports if he's just not that kind of kid.

Accept your child and enjoy him for who he is. Also, dinosaurs are awesome! Who said there was an age limit on liking dinosaurs ffs??

RightOnTheEdge · 17/05/2021 14:00

His dad is the one that is odd.
He does know dinosaurs were real doesn't he? It's not something made up for toddlers like Paw Patrol or Peppa Pig.

Does he think Palaeontologists or museum curators should grow up too?

There's even a Facebook group where adults make up that they are staff at a Jurassic park park, and then other posts with e.g. Dino related articles. So basically it's not unusual, it seems more like your dp,.wants him interested in football ect

I'm a tutor and for fun run a dinosaur class. The kids are all aged 7 and up. I love it and it's fascinating
