Constantly seeing through nappies - where am I going wrong?

My 2 week old keeps wetting through his nappy. It usually happens at night but sometimes when he’s been in his pram for a walk. He’ll have a wet patch up his back.

I’ve tried 2 types of nappies - Tesco size 1, Lidl size 1 and Sainsbury’s size 2 in case it’s a size issue but that was worse.

I’m making sure his willy is facing down. The tabs are quite right (touching) and the frills are pulled out. Yet he can still wee through it within 3 hours!

Anyone know where else I could be going wrong? Or what else I can try? I mentioned it to the health visitor and she just said some babies are Houdini’s and can wee through anything, but it’s getting annoying having to change his whole outfit in the middle of the night because then he’s wide awake and won’t go back to sleep for hours...

Help!

You should be changing more often than 3hrs at that age!

bumpdownthestairs · 28/04/2021 12:57

Changung a nappy every 3 hours is quite normal at this age I would say, also are you sure it's wee on his back? My baby was very sweaty even when just in a babygrow, always under his back. He soon grew out of and the HV etc weren't to concerned but I was changing outfits daily because of it.

bumpdownthestairs · 28/04/2021 12:57

Maybe even every 2 hours for a nappy change at that age?

Both of mine have been heavy wetters so I just changed them every 2hrs when they had a feed. Is his vest/baby grow the right size as sometimes if it's too tight it can cause a leak. I liked Aldi nappies for the smallest sizes.

Snozwanger · 28/04/2021 13:10

Whenever I had leak problems it was because my son had outgrown his poppered vests. They squish into the nappy of too tight. Maybe try the next size?

idontlikealdi · 28/04/2021 13:24

Change more often than three hours at two weeks?

Toolateplanting · 28/04/2021 13:33

Is the back definitely not folded over on itself and the nappy sitting nice and high on his waist?

LuckyFlash · 28/04/2021 14:23

Ah ok, sounds like we’re not changing him regularly enough! I thought it was ok to leave him 3 hours if he was asleep. Now I feel bad! I’ll try setting a 2 hour alarm

Some babies are heavy wetters. I was changing my LO all the time at two weeks old but that was because she was a poo machine. Try changing more regularly for now. FWIW (down the line) I've heard that reusable nappies can absorb more pee than disposables (esp if you use booster pads etc).

Megan2018 · 28/04/2021 15:01

Cloth is definitely more absorbent- I use 99% cloth of you want any info (but have used a few disposable too).

But we changed every 2hrs by day and at every feed at night (probably every 2-3 in practice).

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/04/2021 15:03

I didn’t change every 3 hours at that age or probably ever.

PlantDoctor · 28/04/2021 15:03

Try size 0 nappies. My DD was over 7lb at birth but still had to wear size 0 for the first 3 weeks as size 1 just didn't fit. You can get small packs so not the end of the world of they don't fit.

Oly4 · 28/04/2021 15:06

Pampers. Annoyingly expensive but I’ve never had a single leak

mrsed1987 · 28/04/2021 15:20

I had the same problem when my son was a newborn. I think we should have had him in size 0

Haudyourwheesht · 28/04/2021 15:21

We've never had any bother with Aldi. Sometimes you need to try a few brands to see what suits your baby.

I agree with this, I was about to say this too
Mummy1608 · 28/04/2021 18:22

I wouldn't wake your baby up to change for a wee, just change at every natural waking (ie every feed). But I was going to say either the clothes or the nappies might be too small or too tight. I find it's good to fasten the nappy low on the waist so there's a sealed air gap under the crotch if that makes sense. So the nappy has room to swell up.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 28/04/2021 19:17

I found Boots nappies to be more absorbent than Tesco/Asda in the tiny sizes.

Thesearmsofmine · 28/04/2021 19:27

I was also going to say about his vest being too snug.

Thesearmsofmine · 28/04/2021 19:27

Also every 3 hours is fine(unless dirty of course!)

PollyRoe16 · 28/04/2021 19:40

I found we had to use pampers premium ones at night or we got horrendous leaks!

Ohnomoreno · 28/04/2021 19:42

Just buy pampers and check more often. Also get baby dry for nights once he's a bit older, I buy a few sizes up and make it right so it's more absorbent.

Bluemeadowbaby · 28/04/2021 19:43

I can't remember but do they do the + size in newborn nappies? 🤔 my little boy is a very heavy wetter on a nighttime and we use the Aldi + and never had any issues. I think 3 hours is okay but maybe just check the yellow strip every now and again and see. It's all trial and error with nappies 🙈 x

noonaah · 28/04/2021 19:47

Every 3 hours is fine, and don’t set a 2 hour alarm just change when they naturally wake. In my experience different brands cater for different shaped babies so just try different brands. I found Aldi leaked and always ended up at Pampers while they were very young.

rainbowfairydust · 28/04/2021 19:55

Try using pampers overnight and I fold a little fold at the back of the nappy. Sort of like a little envelope flap which is intended to catch the poo from travelling up their back at that age, but might also work with wee! It does get better the older they get but I def recommend the 12 hr pampers dry night nappies for overnight
