Constantly seeing through nappies - where am I going wrong?

My 2 week old keeps wetting through his nappy. It usually happens at night but sometimes when he’s been in his pram for a walk. He’ll have a wet patch up his back.

I’ve tried 2 types of nappies - Tesco size 1, Lidl size 1 and Sainsbury’s size 2 in case it’s a size issue but that was worse.

I’m making sure his willy is facing down. The tabs are quite right (touching) and the frills are pulled out. Yet he can still wee through it within 3 hours!

Anyone know where else I could be going wrong? Or what else I can try? I mentioned it to the health visitor and she just said some babies are Houdini’s and can wee through anything, but it’s getting annoying having to change his whole outfit in the middle of the night because then he’s wide awake and won’t go back to sleep for hours...

Help!

3 hourly is fine. Health visitors advised us 3 hours between changes (change before a feed). My little one leaked in lots of different types of nappies. It got £££ but we eventually found a brand that worked for us. Hope you manage to find something soon. He might just wee lots xx

3 hours is fine, especially if asleep. If the nappies are bulging when you are changing them then yes change them more frequently but i've always stuck to 3 hours unless dirty or they are asleep. I'd try a few more brands, We tried what felt like every brand with my eldest and settled on Tesco in the end. Different babies suit different nappies.

Use pampers.

You should be getting through approximately 10 nappies a day on average.

I’d recommend pampers nappies, size 1. Never had an issue with wee leakage.

No matter how often you are changing sometimes he may have just a big wee that does not absorb enough.3 hours is perfectly acceptable and you change him straight away if there was a leak.
I think, with all the nappies it's always trial and error, you may have to try few to find a perfect one.My 4DC had leaks from time to time as well, regardless of a nappy brand but I found Naty ones pretty good.Pampers didn't always work for us,still not totally leakproof.
I also tried to cover disposable nappy with reusable nappy cover plus booster (not an actual nappy as it was super bulky).
Congratulations on your new, squishy baby [ flowers]

Good advice above.

I definitely found that some brands of nappies leaked more at different ages. In size 1 DS would always leak through Asda brand, possibly as he had very skinny legs. Then later we couldn’t use Tesco ones as it couldn’t contain his poo! (not sure if this was due to the angle, ferocity or shape!) Grin

He’s now in size 5’s and we can’t use the + ones as then give him a sore bottom.

You sometimes have to play about with brands and sizes to get a good fit. Aldi, Tesco and Pampers were the best for us overall.

We were fine with supermarket nappies during the day but could only use pampers baby dry at night or we would get leaks.

Also you can try adding reusable nappy boosters to your disposable nappies www.thenappylady.co.uk/news/how-to-stop-disposable-nappies-leaking.html

Definitely Pampers. They're magic

Tomatobear · 28/04/2021 20:47

Also congratulations Grin

LittleCatDog · 28/04/2021 21:20

We always used the size up from recommended weight category. At 5 months my friend recommended switching to pull ups and we never had a single leak after that, they're such a better fit especially at night. Also as someone said make sure the vest isn't tight as the poppers bunch up the nappy x

LittleCatDog · 28/04/2021 21:20

Also pampers all the way!

schoolsearchings · 28/04/2021 21:24

I've only ever used pampers and never had a single leak.

Solasum · 28/04/2021 21:25

You do have the frills round the legs facing out, don’t you? I didn’t realise they needed to be out for many many soggy months

Caspianberg · 28/04/2021 21:38

Definitely look at reusable. Ds is changed every 2-3 hrs daytime just so he’s in a fresh comfy nappy. But at night one lasts the full 12hrs fine

PippinStar · 28/04/2021 21:46

Changing every 3 hours is normal, I would have thought? Don’t know anyone who changed more frequently, and everything I’ve read says 3 hours is recommended.

I just used to size up every time my LO got leaks as both were heavy wetters. Naty was/is the best for us, pampers leaked every single time with both babies.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/04/2021 22:02

Pampers had a horrible chemical smell. I only used one packet. The smell was disgusting.

017HF · 28/04/2021 22:19

My son leaked through almost every nappy for the first few weeks, was a nightmare especially during the night having to change his clothes constantly. We switched to Morrison’s Nutmeg nappies and i haven’t had a single leak - have used size 2 and we’re now on size 3 and still the same re no leaks. Aldi and Pampers were both terrible and cause constant leaks - the Morrison’s nappies are padded higher up at the back I think and that seems to do the trick. I haven’t read through every response on this thread but assuming you’re pulling out the frilly bits at the legs too?

I agree with this, I hate the pampers smell. We use Eco by Naty and haven't had many wee leaks at all. Some poo leaks to be fair, especially when my baby started pooing less often at about 6 months.

I thought it was just me but it's so bad isn't it! 😷

I would agree about trying reusable nappies. They're great, so much more absorbent and no chemical smells.
