How to change baby’s nappy who INSISTS on crawling away

Mamabear931 · 13/04/2021 11:12

My DS is 8 months, he’s been rolling since 4 months but only since he’s started crawling he’s decided every time he’s got a dirty nappy he won’t lie still and rolls over and crawls off

It’s not so bad when it’s a wee but the last week we’ve had about 5 disasters where he’s pooed and bolted off and I haven’t been able to keep hold of him and he’s got it all over himself and the floor.

I’m starting to lose my temper when he does it and I feel terrible as I know he doesnt understand but I’ve had enough of cleaning number 2 off everything 😬

I’ve tried distracting with toys, with telly, holding him down, letting him hold a wipe, literally wrestling with him basically at one point but I was scared he’d end up getting hurt if I pin him down as he literally will stop at nothing to get away and screams if you try stop him 😩

It’s becoming a nightmare and I dread changing him!

Try using pull ups and make him stand while changing. I raised DN who used to do this too from 7 mths (DS loves nappy changes lol) - standing up nappy changes were a game changer.

What about one of those anti wriggle changing mats. I've seen some where you strap them down or strap their arms in. Not used them myself, but could be worth a shot?

TwinnyMummy321 · 13/04/2021 11:30

My twins both do this! I've started letting them hold something they're not usually allowed, like my phone... Not great really but needs must, it does keep them distracted for long enough to get the job done. Definitely going to try the standing up idea x

An old TV remote was a hit for us!

SeaTurtles92 · 13/04/2021 11:34

My DS did this. Now 21 months and been doing bum changes with him stood up for a long time, game changer!

At about 8 months my DS was crawling and when he had a no.2 I just used to throw the nappy off and wash him down with the shower head. It saved a lot of poo stains smeared all over the place Grin.

Try using a phone, sometimes that works!

SeaTurtles92 · 13/04/2021 11:34

Also switched to pull ups around 10 months!

battleaxe2000 · 13/04/2021 11:35

Yes change standing up

ContessaVerde · 13/04/2021 11:36

Do it in the bathtub so he can’t get far, and rinse his bottom with the shower head so he’s clean quickly.

Justmuddlingalong · 13/04/2021 11:36

A strip of sellotape worked for me. The stickiness stops it being dropped and the crinkly noise helped too.

LetsGoChamp · 13/04/2021 11:36

Yes stand up give her your phone or something exciting and use pull ups! Absolute game changer with DS from around d 7/8 months old!

LaTomatina · 13/04/2021 11:39

Shower head method. Or, if you aren't at home, put him on his front, face down over your knee. Put an old towel over your knee under the nappy area until you get the knack of it. Definitely the easiest way to do a poo change on an older, wriggly baby.

Baypony · 13/04/2021 11:40

Put the changing mat/plastic sheet in the cot and change baby in there or in the bath (yes really) where it’s easy to wash baby and clear up. Or on the bathroom floor (assuming you don’t have carpet in the bathroom).

This all the way I've done this with my ds since he started crawling off makes it so much easier
bananamonkey · 13/04/2021 11:43

Stand up changes and pull-ups. DC2 is the same, I get her to hold on to a chair and play with something.

Annoyingly she’s on the small side and the only size 3 pull ups I can find are Pampers and they don’t tend to have them in the Supermarkets Hmm

FishyFriday · 13/04/2021 11:51

I change him on the floor and sit so I can put my leg across his torso and prevent him from moving (without hurting him obviously).

brokengate · 13/04/2021 11:54

Only thing that worked for me was giving her something she wasn't normally allowed. My phone, the to remote, etc.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 13/04/2021 11:59

Yeah, I used to put my leg over DS and hold him down. It was a difficult phase! The bath suggestion is good, I wish I'd thought of that.

Tibtab · 13/04/2021 12:00

I use Tesco own brand pull ups, think they start at a size 3, because they stretch they stay on better as well

bilbodog · 13/04/2021 12:01

I remember this nearly 30 years ago 🤣🤣. I used to ‘sit’ over my DS but not on him so he couldnt move - worked for us!

KoalaOok · 13/04/2021 12:03

As PP have said try pull ups. Also an old TV remote or something they don't usually play with.

InsanityOf2020 · 13/04/2021 12:04

Oh my brings back memories. We used reuseable nappies so pullups wasnt a option but i remember with practice i got expert at changing nappies no matter what way round or whether stationary or mobile. But as pp said something to distract them is a must

LapinR0se · 13/04/2021 12:06

Sit with your legs in a V and with the baby lying legs towards you in the V.
Very gently put your ankles/lower calves on top of the baby’s shoulders. The baby cannot roll or flip over now which is step 1 to escaping.
You also have two hands free to do a very fast change. It will take 60 seconds then he’s off to roam about again.
Sing and chat to him the whole time so he feels reassured.

candlemasbells · 13/04/2021 12:07

I give my 8 month old something to hold she isn't usually allowed and that works. The sudocrem pot is currently a favourite

Zarinea · 13/04/2021 12:08

I have a bag of interesting bits (old sunglasses, hair clips, old make up brushes ect) in the bathroom by the mat. DD gets a lucky dip thing to play with each change.

I found the 'escaping to wipe their bum on the floor' phase fairly short lived. Once she'd got over the novelty of crawling then escaping was less exciting.

BertieBotts · 13/04/2021 12:08

Do it standing up. This is what pull ups are for.

Let him watch videos on your phone.
