How to change baby’s nappy who INSISTS on crawling away

My DS is 8 months, he’s been rolling since 4 months but only since he’s started crawling he’s decided every time he’s got a dirty nappy he won’t lie still and rolls over and crawls off

It’s not so bad when it’s a wee but the last week we’ve had about 5 disasters where he’s pooed and bolted off and I haven’t been able to keep hold of him and he’s got it all over himself and the floor.

I’m starting to lose my temper when he does it and I feel terrible as I know he doesnt understand but I’ve had enough of cleaning number 2 off everything 😬

I’ve tried distracting with toys, with telly, holding him down, letting him hold a wipe, literally wrestling with him basically at one point but I was scared he’d end up getting hurt if I pin him down as he literally will stop at nothing to get away and screams if you try stop him 😩

It’s becoming a nightmare and I dread changing him!

Use the changing table/unit? We never changed DS on the floor, he would've bolted at first opportunity. Also means everything is where you need it and there's no leaving things upstairs/downstairs etc

My 1yo has been doing this for two months now, it's driving me insane! The only thing that works is if I hand him something to play with and then whilst he's distracted to lay him down and continue to really enthusiastically speak to him whilst he's playing with it. Hoping he goes over this phase cos it's really annoying so I feel your pain lol.

I used to turn them towards me and put a leg over each shoulder and give them my keys.

@LaTomatina

Shower head method. Or, if you aren't at home, put him on his front, face down over your knee. Put an old towel over your knee under the nappy area until you get the knack of it. Definitely the easiest way to do a poo change on an older, wriggly baby.
I second this, on your lap is the easiest way to control this.

We kept a toy in the bathroom to play with during nappy changes. Something plastic and easy to wash.

Or an empty baby wipe packet had a mystical fascination.

I've had to do them standing up too. Singing a song and giving ds a remote or phone or something usually is the best way. Changing clothes is the same, I have to chase him and wrangle one arm in here, one arm in there. Throws himself on the floor as I try to wrestle a leg in and howls.

Phone or keys and leg over to hold technique here too. It does get better eventually...

In the bath, or across your lap while you sit forward so there's nowhere for their arms and legs to grip/push against.

Several options that I've used.

  1. hold both legs with one hand, make sure they are back towards baby's torso so they can't flip over! Change nappy with the other hand.

  2. pin arms under each of your knees and change baby in between your splayed legs, if that makes sense.

  3. distraction.

  4. always change them in the corner so it's harder for them to run off.

I used to do the shower head method. Good luck!

On changing unit here as well. He seems to know he sup high and if tries can’t go anywhere. On the floor he just runs like usain bolt
