Im a 3rd year maths student and single mum to bean, 22wks. Only been a student parent for 4 wks but it's hard! Can't imagine it's going to get any easier either but i'm sure it's worth it.

What is everyone else studying? Oh, and where? I'm at uni in edinburgh.

Me too. I'm doing my MSc in Library and Information Studies. I gave up work recently to focus more of my time on it as it was too hard for me to juggle working, mothering and studying all together.

My dd is just 2 but I started this when I was pregnant

I wish it weren't by distance learning... how I would love the interaction of attending University lectures again.

tootle - think we just get less contact time as masters students. I had 3 hours a week in the 1st year, and none at all in teh 2nd as it is just my dissertation now. Haven't spoken to my tutor for months. Deadline on the 15th Dec - gotta go!

Anyone else out there doing a PhD - have gone over allotted time due to work & baby commitments, so am no longer on Uni register. I am therefore a complete non-person, no official status as student, so NO discounts or childcare benefit. Anyone in a similar situation managed to get extra £ from Benefits. Am on last bit of savings from job pre-mum time.

roosmum · 16/03/2005 11:16

Hi everyone,

I'm studying for a Masters Degree in Child Welfare and first baby is due in 10 weeks. Also still working 4 days a week! Glad I'm not the only mad one and that it is possible! x

Chandra · 17/03/2005 14:35

Tiggus, I'm afraid I have not been able to find any support for PhD levels with the only exception of a nursery subsidy that it's a bit laughable.

Roosmum. Now we are three in York . Enjoy the time with your new baby

Holly, it's possible but your organisation skills are going to be tested to the limit. DS was born in the middle of the term, and although he peeing on my essay draft in his first week of his life looked as a premonition success was at the end

roosmum · 18/03/2005 16:36

hi chandra - what studies are you doing (phd?)?
essay incident made me smile! luckily (or should that be unfortunately??) no drafts for ds to aim at at the moment ... busy instead making black-white-red shapes to amuse him with - & loving it!

Hello,
I'm in final year of PhD at Newcastle - African politics. Although i qualify 'final year' as final year of being funded. Single mum with one dd 7 months. The worst part is the depressing stuff I have to reserach. Certainly find juggling everything difficult but determined to get there in the end.

Hi everyone , I am new to mumsnet and I am glad to have found fellow student mommies to talk to. I have two little girls 3yrs and 5 mnths and am studying an HNC in Business Administration. Nearly finished although the last hurdle seems to be the biggest slog! Going to do an HND next year full time AAAHHH am I mad? Find juggling everything extremly difficult and spend most of my time running everywhere and feeling extremely flustered. I am determined to better my career prospects though so that I can give my girls the best start in life.
