Baby doesn't cry when nappy dirty...should I be worried?

Just been to her 6-8 week check and discussed her never ending nappy rash. GP said it was highly unusual that she didn't cry for a change. Is this right? FTM now with something else to worry about...

Nothing to worry about at all.
Just means you have to check the nappy regularly until they learn it’s not nice (which could be never lol)

theteachesofpeaches · 07/04/2021 11:11

Some babies do, some don't. It's not something to worry about.

Vallmo47 · 07/04/2021 11:13

What a strange comment to pass. Neither of mine ever complained about having a wet/dirty nappy but obviously I checked regularly.

I have three, and none of them have ever cried when they had a dirty nappy. Does your GP have kids? I know I used to come out with awful shite about childrearing before I actually had any myself...

Hellocatshome · 07/04/2021 11:14

Neither of mine ever cried for a dirty nappy, I think nappies are so absorbent these days they rarely got uncomfortable enough to cry and we changed them when we could tell the nappy was dirty/wet so why would they need to cry.

Mummaofboys93 · 07/04/2021 11:14

Not something to worry about imo.

SnuggyBuggy · 07/04/2021 11:14

Some babies just don't care. I'd just aim to change every few hours or sooner if dirty rather than wait for signs from the baby.

Neither of mine cried for a nappy change; what an odd comment

123magicstar · 07/04/2021 11:15

Thank you. Was particularly worried as this GP is the child specialist!!

Neither of my two ever cried when they needed a nappy change! In face I’ve never heard this was a thing.

MrsTophamHat · 07/04/2021 11:15

Neither of mine cried for a change when they were that young. I wouldn't say it was highly unusual at all.

The best thing is to just get into a habit of changing every couple of hours, but no need to do it at night unless it's poo.

I always found Bepanthen the best for nappy rash too.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/04/2021 11:16

I think modern nappies are much more comfortable to wear when wet or dirty.

Pyewackect · 07/04/2021 11:19

My son was happy to sit in his own shit all day. My daughters on the hand would scream the house down even if they wet themselves.

Shelovesamystery · 07/04/2021 11:23

Neither of mine ever did. Right up to being fully potty trained as well, had to constantly check they hadn't wet themselves because they would never tell me, just carry on playing in wet pants Confused

ineedaholidaynow · 07/04/2021 11:23

@Pyewackect my DS was the same! Obviously didn’t but if it was DH’s watch he didn’t always get changed as soon as the nappy was dirty as DH doesn’t have much of a sense of smell so didn’t always notice the unpleasant aroma that was coming from DS’s rear end!

Mc3209 · 07/04/2021 11:23

Mine is quite happy to sit there with a biggest turd/pooxplosion in his nappy without showing any signs of discontent at all. I change his nappy regularly, and with poo-y ones, now they are pretty obvious when he has just produced one or in the process (bouncy chair is now known as poo chair). My baby is 5 months old.

RaspberryBubblegum · 07/04/2021 11:23

Neither of mine ever complained about full nappies. Was the gp older? I know old nappies and reusable ones weren't as absorbant so children probably did used to complain more so maybe that's why the comment was made.
Either way I wouldn't say it's anything to worry about 🙂

OwlBasket · 07/04/2021 11:27

Neither of my DC cried with a dirty nappy, we used cloth nappies so extreme absorbency wasn’t the reason!

Metanium is the best cream in the world for treating bad nappy rash IME. Once it’s gone bepanthen will stop it coming back

randomsabreuse · 07/04/2021 11:28

My first would get cross about wee that barely triggered the line in a baby nappy. Second was either similar or flat out ignored massive shits up his back with no apparent reason. So I always checked him after every feed and if he woke up.

tiredmum2468 · 07/04/2021 11:28

I have a daughter who's nearly 6 and she hated being dirty and let me know immediately but my son is 2 and the first I know about it is when I can smell it! I guess they're all different.

I can however recommend some lovely stuff I use
https://www.boots.com/bepanthen-nappy-care-ointment-30g-10195185?cmmmc=bmm-buk-google-ppccPLAsAsHeroCompareareBepanthen--Boots+Shopping+-+Category+-+Baby+-+Mobile&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIprDU-PXr7wIVtGDmCh0GBArVEAQYASABEgKb5PDD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

It works as a barrier cream I use it every day to protect against nappy rash and then it's not as thick as sudocrem and I have that for in the event it's really sore.

Hope this is helpful x

Crappyfridays7 · 07/04/2021 11:31

Sounds like gp is child specialist = thinks he knows it all. I’m a paeds nurse 16 years experience and I have 4 kids of my own and some babies just don’t care and nappies can absorb a lot of poop when they are tiny. My eldest didn’t care neither did my youngest. I used to just check regularly and change ASAP if I smelt it.

As for nappy rash, you can get pads to lie your baby on without a nappy. Keep her bum as clean and dry as you can thinly apply cream (metanium (stains and it’s horrible but works or bepanthen sudocrem stings) some nappies can cause terrible nappy rash I’ve seen some horrific infected nappy rashes on babies, looks so so painful water wipes are good too or just small Muslins in warm water and pat dry and leave nappy off. Hope it’s better soon op

user1471523870 · 07/04/2021 11:33

Mine never cried for a full nappy as a baby and not even now at 2,5 shows any signs of discomfort when his nappy is wet or dirty! I think he could happily stay in a pooped nappy for hours if allowed...

CoalCraft · 07/04/2021 11:33

DD does get a bit fussy if she's done a huge poo or she's very soggy, but it doesn't seem to bother her too much.

jessstan2 · 07/04/2021 11:35

Mine never did either but was awake when doing a poo so I always knew. You can't do anything but check regularly.

123magicstar · 07/04/2021 11:37

Thanks all. I feel like we've done it all to try and clear this rash! Bum out for hours a day, soaking, cotton wool and water, no wipes, hypoallergenic nappies etc. Meta made it worse as did sudocreme. Weve now been prescribed another cream so fingers crossed.
