You know your child is a fussy eater when...

You start wondering whether ketchup or popcorn can be counted as a portion of vegetables.

Your green wheelie bin is full to the brim with your child's leftovers.

Your toddler will only eat a banana whilst still in the supermarket (We do pay for it first). She will not touch bananas at any other time, however fresh they are.

Your other child's 'fruit eating' sticker chart has been gathering dust on the kitchen wall for 5 months, during which time she has not eaten a single piece of fruit.

Dont offer alternatives.

LoveMyGirls · 08/11/2007 19:51

They spit/ throw food
Refuse point blank to even lick it, kiss it, hold it.
Yet another good meal goes in the bin.
You get really excited when they have more than a couple of mouthfuls, sometimes even one mouthful is a bonus!

haychee · 08/11/2007 19:52

Dont offer alternatives.

No snacks unless its fruit.

Haychee that is not useful!

To the op...

You have a whole freezer drawer full of the same thing.

You take a photo when they eat something healthy.

You have shares in Organix.

lairyfairy · 08/11/2007 19:57

Why are you trying to get your child to kiss, lick or hold food. surely just eating or not eating is the best idea. Once saw a Super nanny where they had a child in tears trying to force him to touch a sausage, where is the nutritional value in touching food.
Soory not really grumpy cow just my pet problem.

lairyfairy · 08/11/2007 19:58

Get the organix shares thing, home bargains had one month in date cereal bars for 5p each last week, I bought the lot and they are all gone already.

Please don't worry too much my DS1 (now 6) was dreadful until he went to school, I worried myself sick (not literally!)over his fussy ways. For ages he would only eat apple - no other fruit or veg unless it was hidden i.e in mashed potato. Since being introduced to healthy snacks at school mid-morning, he now eats apple, satsumas/mandarins, raw carrot, grapes. I think it was either peer pressure or hunger! He even now likes green beans (only the expensive whole ones!)and will sometimes eat cauliflower (but dislikes the stalk)I know this isn't a massive range but in comparison with the years of hell I went through trying different things like you and throwing them in the bin, he has made massive steps. Don't blame yourself or ask what you are doing wrong. I'm sure it is in their character. My DS2 (Now 2.5)is completely different, eats almost anything and is laid back about food.

ImportantCod · 08/11/2007 20:00

you cry when they wont eat somehting
i , dear reader, have cried

haychee · 08/11/2007 20:00

Do you all like the fact that your kids are fussy? That they dont eat fruit? That they dont eat anything healthy? That you throw away food youve shopped, prepared and cooked?

Its easy to solve....
Dont offer alternatives!

Othersideofthechannel · 08/11/2007 20:01

Surely melpomene started this thread is to have a little laugh and relieve a bit of stress rather than get advice?

Othersideofthechannel · 08/11/2007 20:02

Isn't it just a follow on from 'you know you have a toddler in the house when.....'

StrawberryMartini · 08/11/2007 20:02

Haychee have you actually had any experience of a child who will eat NOTHING healthy and never has done? I hate it when we get blamed. And the crap about 'if they are hungry they will eat' is bollocks!

StrawberryMartini · 08/11/2007 20:03

I was looking forward to hearing other parents' experiences not being told to 'just give them fruit'. Do you not think we have tried that?

ImportantCod · 08/11/2007 20:04

SHIT UP WIHT THE FRUIT FGS MY KDIS WONT EAT THAT

WLEL ONE WILL
SO FAKR ORF

FairyOnTopOfTheChristmasTree · 08/11/2007 20:04

that something they loved yesterday will be greeted with a 'yeuch' and rejected today, tomorrow, the next day, etc

LadyTophamHatt · 08/11/2007 20:04

when they do eat something new, they ask why they are having again after 6 days of the same packed lunch/dinner.

ImportantCod · 08/11/2007 20:04

or you can do the same sandwhcies for 20 years then one day ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh no

ArmadilloDaMan · 08/11/2007 20:05

YOu go to all-day family gathering. Your child eats nothing. OThers feel the need to repeatedly point this out to you, looking shocked. You feel the need to point out repeatedly 'well he ate yesterday' adn can't understand what the fuss is about.

StrawberryMartini · 08/11/2007 20:05

Ds ate a raisin once - I know because it came out the other end. Does that count?

ImportantCod · 08/11/2007 20:05

theylleat one really ofdd thign( poppy knot rolls) but not an apple

lairyfairy · 08/11/2007 20:05

When you finally manage to get some food down them and they then have a tantrum and throw it all back up again. FUN.

StrawberryMartini · 08/11/2007 20:07

LF

haychee · 08/11/2007 20:07

Actually its not.
My dd1 wouldnt eat anything apart from pasta and hot dog sausages or spagetti hoops. Never ate breakfast. And ate around 4 packets of crisps a day.

I was so stressed, i couldnt get her to eat anything. She even vomitted once when i made her a boiled egg!

I starved her! I made her proper food, which of course she refused. So i took it away with no fuss. She wasnt allowed anything else until the next meal. And so it went on. She starved herself for 2days! Then started to eat.

So stick that in you pipe and smoke it! STRAWBERRY MARTINI!!
I have been there, i have taken photos of clean plates, i have thrown out god knows how much wasted food.

StrawberryMartini · 08/11/2007 20:08

Good for you.

MadMazza · 08/11/2007 20:08

I think it's useful for people to know that others have gone through/are going through the same things. Also for first time parents, its comforting to know their child should still grow up to be bright, happy, and healthy (even if they did live for a period of their lives on a somewhat restricted diet).
