Does anyone nap or am I lazy?

DS is 21 months and I tend to get about 5-6 hrs sleep a night sometimes broken, sometimes straight.I still always feel so tired and so often have a nap when he naps over lunchtime for 1-2 hours while my DD is now back at school. I feel guilty that I don't get things done in the house but I always seem to feel so groggy and tired that I want to take advantage of nap opportunity! Whenever I mention that I've had a nap to another mum they laugh that it's a real luxury and say they could never do that because that's their only chance to get things done... which makes me think am I actually being lazy for having naps like this? Should I suck it up and be more productive? Is it normal to still feel tired with this amount of sleep?

My kids are at school and I still take naps. Do what you need to do. 5/6 hours sleep is not enough for lots of people. Productivity is overrated.

funnyoldonion · 23/03/2021 07:37

They probably just don't admit it. I used to when my kids were little like yours but don't now as I get enough sleep at night and I felt far more energised and productive from having one!

Heartofstrings · 23/03/2021 07:39

I nap very often. I have a 3 year old and a 4 year old. I'm not sure that my friends nap but don't think they would mention it if they did

5-6 hours sleep isn’t sustainable for most adults. When my DS was sleeping well I wouldn’t need a nap, but now sometimes I do nap with him (I’m pregnant too).

Think of it as catching up on lost sleep. That’s exactly what you’re doing.

imjustanerd · 23/03/2021 07:43

I love a good nap, my ds is 8 but I had them before he was born I'm from a family of nappers. It's proven to be good for you it lowers your blood pressure but only if you sleep for under two hours I think.

Wobbitcatcher · 23/03/2021 07:44

I don’t think you can compare like that, by 21 months lots of kids will be sleeping pretty well so mum doesn’t need a nap.
My son was still waking a fair bit at that age and I was still feeling sleep deprived. I would definitely have napped when he did on my days off. I mainly would lay on the sofa and watch tv to zone out rather than actually go to bed.

My daughter however is an excellent sleeper so I’m getting enough at night and don’t need to nap.

My husband is also very good at picking up the slack around the house so anything I don’t manage he will get on with, perhaps if she doesn’t do it then it doesn’t get done?

daisyoranges · 23/03/2021 07:47

I would if I could! My baby won’t be put down to nap though.

Vodkabulary · 23/03/2021 07:49

Naps ❤️ I still grab an after lunch nap while my youngest two nap before the school run if I can! On a good day I get 5 hrs sleep
So naps are essential here

stuckinarutatwork · 23/03/2021 07:50

Oh I did when the children were small. I remember when DC1 started nursery or school, I had to set an alarm to wake me up to pick her up at 3:15, as even if I didn't intend to, I'd often nod off sat on the sofa after putting toddler DC2 to bed for a nap after lunch.
I've actually only stopped daytime napping in the last couple of years. I seem to be more energetic in my 40s than I ever was in my 30s!

Ragwort · 23/03/2021 07:52

Yes I used to nap when my DS was younger ... and even as he got older I would often 'have a nap' at weekends if he was being particularly energetic and I wanted some peace and quiet Grin.... now I am in my 60s and still love a nap, have spent most of lockdown 'napping' if I am honest!

Itsjustaride8w737 · 23/03/2021 07:53

I still nap and dd is 12!

Usually for a few hours before I was pregnant now a lot more as i struggle to sleep at night.

I so agree with this!

I don’t nap regularly, but when I need one (and I can) I take one. The human body is very good at communicating it’s needs, when we listen.

Potpourriandpennysweets · 23/03/2021 07:57

I wish I could grab naps (and Do whenever I can!)
My sleep maths goes...

8 hours sleep + 2 hours housework = clean house

5 hours sleep + 5 hours housework = messy house.

Why? Because on 8 hours sleep I am really efficient and can clean my kitchen in 20 mins, and on 5 hours sleep I am like a zombie and just walk from room to room looking lost with a cloth in my hand losing time.

Sleep is awesome. I did not appreciate how wonderful it was until I lived without it! It takes priority over all other things in my life.

LavenderEast · 23/03/2021 08:16

Oh I love a nap, I feel so much better and more able to get on with stuff after a quick mid day snooze. There is some science that a 30 minute catnap is much better for your overall energy levels and wellbeing than a couple of hours. I'll try and find the article

mummybear456 · 23/03/2021 08:19

@pancakes22 do what you need to do!!! Us mums don't get enough time to our self's so if you want a nap take a nap. I did with my first baby

doadeer · 23/03/2021 08:26

I napped when my son was small, under 6 months but after that I was working when he slept so it was always a bit of a a rush. That sounds difficult you're still getting broken sleep at 21months

soughsigh · 23/03/2021 15:52

I refuse to clean while the toddler is sleeping, I use that as me time - if you worked, you would be entitled to a lunch break. If I am tired, that takes the form of a nap. The housework I usually fit in while my husband does bathtime.

Greenmarmalade · 23/03/2021 15:55

Never feel bad about your nap!
I would do the same, given the chance, and I often do at weekends.

VoyageInTheDark · 23/03/2021 16:00

I nap every day while DD is a at preschool. I'm pregnant but even if I wasn't I'd still nap tbh as I suffer from fatigue due to mental illness. I just don't tell anyone so I don't feel judged!

SleepingStandingUp · 23/03/2021 16:04

My twins sense when I'm exhausted so take it in turns to nap so no, I don't nap in the day. But my God I would if they would sodding comply.

If you're getting 6 hours every day and still needing 2 in the day consistently o think it's worth getting blood tests just to rule out low vitamin anything etc but otherwise carry on.

Do you have a partner? Can you catch-up a bit weekends? Or can they do nights weekends?

IdblowJonSnow · 23/03/2021 16:05

Keep napping! But stop telling people who will make you feel shit or lazy about it!
Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing.

EsmeeMerlin · 23/03/2021 16:05

I would often nap when my youngest ds did and ds1 was at school. If I didn’t go to sleep, I would never do housework. I always used nap time as a chance to take some time for myself. I would do housework while ds2 watched some tv and had his lunch after a morning at a playgroup.

LettyLoman · 23/03/2021 16:07

Nap - its cheaper than botox.
