Anyone had a high percentile baby and did they ever slow down?

DS was on the 98th percentile for height and weight when he was born and is still on it at almost 4 months and in 9-12 months clothes, me and DH aren't particularly tall ourselves so wondering if we should expect him to slow down eventually?

DS1 was 10lb 3oz at birth and his head measurement was off the chart.

He's finally starting to slow down now he's 5. He's still tall and chunky and is always one of the biggest in his class or any group he goes to, but he doesn't stand out as such.

LolaNova · 04/03/2021 11:26

DS was around the 80th centile so not huge but pretty big. After he started crawling he dropped down to the 50th centile and is now just below it at 2.5. He’s around the 90th centile for height though.

CoronaIsShit · 04/03/2021 11:41

DS3 was 97th centile at birth and pretty much stayed the same. He’s 10 and half now and in 14/15 year clothes. August born but 2nd tallest in year (tallest is September born).

I’m 5ft 8 and DH is 5ft 11 but DS2 is 6ft 4 (35th centile at birth!).

DD has tracked the 91st for height and 50th for weight since the day she was born up till now at 8.5 years old.
I expect an early puberty from her though (as I was a tall kid with early puberty) which will slow her down so I strongly doubt she will be a 91st centile adult. I suspect her height will catch down with her weight at some point in the teens.
With your heights I would guess your DS would fall a couple of centiles but who knows.

My son was 9lb 9.5 and 98th centile and he has just kept growing. Hes just turned eight and age 9 wont last much longer and he is a size 3 feet (same as my dd who is 11.5). He is very lean, not skinny but can see definition on his tummy etc and has muscular calfs (like my dad and the men in my family). I think he will be tall and my brother has size 12 feet so like big feet also.

Harrysmummy246 · 04/03/2021 12:55

DS Still High centile at 3y almost 9 mo but height has finally caught up with weight now as he was always slightly lower for height til he shot up 6cm in 3 months last summer. Mostly in 4-5 clothes now and well over average height for a 4yo boy. DH and I are both tall, and most of my family are too. We almost skipped 6-9 mo clothes entirely and even now, not getting the full time out of a size.

Oh and he eats. A LOT

1990shopefulftm · 04/03/2021 12:59

@Harrysmummy246 so far I ve gotten a month out of clothes so I m hoping perhaps we ll get a bit longer eventually

Nope! Both of my girls were 91st centile for height and 98th for weight, and still are now at 19 months old and 3.5 years old!

My 19 month old is growing out of age 2-3 clothes Shock and my 3.5 year old is growing out of age 5-6 clothes Shock. However I am 6ft so it was sort of to be expected I suppose!

Rosebud2016 · 04/03/2021 13:13

Oh and they both eat SO much! I dread to think about the amount of food they’ll consume when they reach school age.

ThatLibraryMiss · 04/03/2021 13:13

My daughter was well over the 99th centile for everything at birth and she tracked those lines. As an adult she's 5'11 and broad - not at all fat but generally big, like she's built to 110% scale. Which I suppose she is, really.

Clothes will last longer when you get into bigger sizes but start saving for shoes now, OP. There aren't many in bigger sizes that are acceptable to a fashion-conscious teen.

According to this study, height is positively correlated with earnings. Height has a greater effect than any other predictor apart from gender (women earn less. I know you will be shocked, shocked I tell you, at this.) So hopefully he'll be able to afford his own fancy shoes when he's older.

AWryGiraffe · 04/03/2021 13:17

I was well over 10lbs when I was born, so I would say fairly high on the centiles, one of the tallest all the way through school, but then stopped growing at about 14ish, and am now an unremarkable 5'4.5. Still have big feet though!

MrsTophamHat · 04/03/2021 13:38

My son was 98th for height and weight and still is at 3.5years. He wears age 5-6 clothes and size 11 shoes.

My husband and I are both average height, but there are some tall men in my husband's family.

1990shopefulftm · 04/03/2021 15:55

@ThatLibraryMiss I hadn't even thought about how bad our shoe bill could be.

My friend’s DD was off the charts. We joked that she had her out centile. Her mum called her Babyzilla! She’s now a perfectly normal sized 3 yr old.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 04/03/2021 16:41

My son was born on 98th centile for everything (weight, length and head). At 11 months he's still there.

Fembot123 · 04/03/2021 16:42

All 3 of mine were large and are now average/on the smaller side.

I feel you on the head thing, my first was the same 😁
Koolandorthegang · 05/03/2021 00:53

My DD was off the charts for length and head size and was 9 lbs.

She’s in size 18-24 now at 9 months.

I’m only 5 ft 3 and DP is 5 ft 10.

I’ve gotten a month out of clothes sizes so far like you. Hoping it slows down soon as it’s hard to keep up!

SleepingStandingUp · 05/03/2021 00:58

Following 😂

My twins were just under 7lb each at 36 weeks. Always been high on percentiles. At 15 months they're outgrowing 18-24 month clothes and are about 28-29lbs.

BertieBotts · 05/03/2021 07:59

DS2 was off the scale or around 99th during most of his first year. Once he could properly walk and run he went down to 75th and 99th. Now he's 2.5 he's around 75th for both weight and height.

BertieBotts · 05/03/2021 08:02

If your child is high centile, BTW, don't buy a car seat up to "age 4" / 18kg once they grow out of their infant seat (that includes the ones up to 12 years as they usually turn into just a booster seat at 18kg.) instead you'll want to find one that goes up to 25kg. They do exist, both rear facing and forward facing options. With an "up to age 4" seat they mean up until your child is in age 4-5 clothes! So if they are in clothing sizes early you'll find you need to buy another car seat before very long.

BunnyRuddington · 05/03/2021 08:03

DN was born on the same centiles. I think she reached 6ft at 13.

TheHumanSatsuma · 05/03/2021 08:04

Yes, my daughter was on 95th percentile for height from about 2. She was head and shoulders above the other children in Reception. She’s 32 now and around 5ft 9.

I was really tall by Year 6 and then stopped growing at 11.

My son, on the other hand was 3rd centile at one point but is now around 5ft 11 ish at 28.

CooDeGrass · 05/03/2021 08:09

Mine all did the same JesusInTheCabbageVan Grin, both weight and height.

Now I have a pair of teen sons streaking well north of 6 feet and out of high street shoe sizes (sorry OP). Younger DC looking like they have the same idea. They’re all gorgeous, apart from the logistical challenge of finding anything that fits.

Weight did even out by school age though, and DH and I (as adults both tall and naturally at the lower end of average BMI) were big as young children so it wasn’t unexpected. DC are all now very slim.

Didn’t stop a lot of handwringing from health visitor with DC1 though, who couldn’t believe I was only breastfeeding him and wanted to refer us here, there and everywhere for growth disorders.
