Anyone had a high percentile baby and did they ever slow down?

DS was on the 98th percentile for height and weight when he was born and is still on it at almost 4 months and in 9-12 months clothes, me and DH aren't particularly tall ourselves so wondering if we should expect him to slow down eventually?

Yeah my little girl did. She was 98th for height until about her first birthday. She was always in clothes ahead of her age.
She is now nearly two and is only just about on 50th centile and wearing clothes for the right age. I'm only 5ft 2 and my husband isn't that tall so I was expecting her to be short!

ElphabaTheGreen · 03/03/2021 21:00

Both of mine were high centile babies.

DS1 dropped centiles massively by four months and were all terribly concerned, but they only looked at his weight. Had they measured his length they’d have seen where all that milk from his continuous feeding was going (looooong). He is now the tallest, skinniest 8 year old you have ever seen.

DS2 was pretty much the same (even heavier than DS1 at birth). Dropped centiles a lot, although not quite with the same commitment as DS1, and has always remained very tall for his age but has his mother’s arse At six, he’s an August-born Y2, eye to eye with many of the Y4s.

Oh, my DH is 6ft 3in, though, so not really a surprise they’re tall.

My DD was 92nd percentile for weight and 98th percentile for head circumference at birth, but with long body/ short limbs, so not very long overall.

She is 3 now and just above the 50th for weight and below the 50th for height, her head is still massive though but much more in proportion than it was.

Retrievemysanity · 03/03/2021 21:08

DD2 was off the scale for height at birth. Think weight was about 90th (9lb at birth). She’s always been tallest girl in her class but now, aged 10, her friends are catching her up. She’s 5 foot so still tall but while her friends are having growth spurts I don’t think she will she’s just always been consistently tall. I’m average height, DH is over 6 foot as are all the males in his family. Weight, she was a chubby baby but slimmed down as soon as she hit toddler years.

Terrylovesyogurt · 03/03/2021 21:09

Both mine (DD13 and DS11) were 98th centile. DS is now 5'10 at just over 11years and DD is almost 14 and 5'8. DD seems to have almost stopped growing now but DS has shot up about 7 inches over the last year.

Both were high weight centile too at a few months and are both very, very slim now.

Tall dad (6'4) though. I'm 5'5 and they tower over meGrin

Ikora · 03/03/2021 21:11

Two dc one low and one high on percentiles as babies. As teenagers exactly the same DD 5ft 1 and DS 6ft 5. To be fair height wise they take after each side of both DH and mines families.

1990shopefulftm · 03/03/2021 21:13

We re both only 5 5 and 5 6 but there are quite tall men on both sides of our family so we have wondered if he could be tall and skinny perhaps

OP posts:
crankysaurus · 03/03/2021 21:13

Nope, he's now mid teens and 6'4"

weehoo · 03/03/2021 21:14

DD1 high percentiles at birth. Rapid drop of weight in weeks after then at 18m was found to have lost all her height and was eventually diagnosed with a genetic growth disorder.

DD2 massive at birth (10.5lb) but now at age 5 is average height and weight

chutneypig · 03/03/2021 21:15

DS was 98th centile at birth and stayed there for the first couple of years. He was around 75th centile by the time he was in reception. His twin sister was 25th centile at birth but is now taller than him aged 13. No idea of their centiles now but they’re certainly shorter than most of their classmates.

DJattheendoftheworld · 03/03/2021 21:16

DS was 98th for height, and weighed 9 1/2lb (can't remember what centile that was). He's now a fairly average height, very skinny 6yo.

Hoppinggreen · 03/03/2021 21:17

No, my 12 year old is 5ft 8 with size 10 feet
DH is 6ft 2 so it’s not a total surprise
I am only 5ft 5 though and and DD (who was always one of the tallest in her year until about Y9) has stopped at 5ft 4

Fifilafrog · 03/03/2021 21:18

Yep. DD was 98th centimetres. 11lb and tall, straight into 6-12 months from birth. She's now a slim 8 year old and tall (but by no means the tallest in her class). We're not massively tall - 5'9" and 5'11" and average builds. They settle down eventually!

Gliblet · 03/03/2021 21:18

DS dropped to 70th centile at one point, but has been consistently 90+ otherwise. He's just turned 9 and is in clothes sized for 13 year olds.

DH is 6'5" and makes the rest of his family look like hobbits so I imagine they probably had the same kind of conversation you and your DH have been having Grin

newyeardelurker · 03/03/2021 21:18

DD was 10lb 9 at birth, she was chunky until around 6, at 10 she is now tall, but not the tallest in her class, and slim. Me and DP are tall-ish at 6 foot and 5 foot 8.

chickadeeeeeeeee · 03/03/2021 21:18

Dd-98th centile, 16 years old and 5ft 10''
8lb when born

Ds 96th centile 13 years old and 5ft 8''
8 1/2 lb when born

I am 6ft
Husband 6ft 3''

Not sure they have finished growing yet Wink

BlackBrowedAlbatross · 03/03/2021 21:21

DS(17) was in the 90s for height and weight (10lbs+) and is now a lanky 6'4". I am 5'9" and have always felt quite tall but will soon be the shortest in the family with DD(14) currently an inch or so behind me.

CoodleMoodle · 03/03/2021 21:39

DD(almost 7) was exactly 50th percentile for everything from birth, now she's tall and slim, but heavy if she sits on you! She's been in 7-8 or 8-9 clothes for a long time, mostly because of her long legs.

DS(2.5) on the other hand... He was 99th for weight, 25th for height and 9th (ninth!) for head at one of his early checks. He was a proper chubby baby, all fat rolls etc. Loved food from the start, still eats everything, etc. We were a bit worried about his height and head circumference, though.

Then at his next check he was 99th for ALL THREE. He sort of... caught up with himself, if you like. He was a big boy when he was small. Now he's 2.5 and is fairly tall, has a fairly normal head, and has dropped a lot of the puppy fat. He's still a chunk (most people say "bloody hell!" when they lift him up!) but he seems to have evened out. He wears a mix of 2-3 and 3-4, and the 2-3 is starting to look a little snug/short.

I'm 5"2 and tiny, DH is 5"11 and more... well-built!

dopenguinsdance · 03/03/2021 22:04

To answer the OP's original question, no. 98th centile height, weight in proportion but not an overly chubby baby. Now 16, classic v-shape torso; broad-shouldered, solid ...and 195cm tall. And that's before adding the extra cm for lockdown hair.
His growth spurts were very regular, were easy to track and went in 4 stages; weight gain, grumpy, sleepy, very deep long sleep and would then wake up significantly taller. I say 'were' but I'm not sure he's there yet.

JustStopFightingPlease · 04/03/2021 10:37

Yes both of mine were massive at birth, DS particularly so at 11lbs born at 39wks.

He's 5 now and 70th centile (still means he's in 6-7 clothes Hmm)

DD is tall and heavy for her age (nearly 3) but perfectly proportioned.

We're both small (5ft3 and 5ft8) so not expecting then to actually be that big as adults.

Thatwentbadly · 04/03/2021 10:52

Yes and no. DD1 was born in on the 99.8 for height and 75for weight. She is nearly 5 and is 90 for both last time I checked, although she has had a growth spurt.

I was told in hospital when they start measuring them standing standing up they tend to drop slightly in height centile.

SalaciousCrumble · 04/03/2021 11:02

Both mine were big babies (9lb 5oz and 10lb 1oz) but dropped steadily from about 6m to 2 years. Now 6 and 8 and they're just below 50th centile. The midwife told me I 'make really good placentas' but DH and I are both small and slim so they were never likely to grow up to be huge. I do love a good chunky baby though!

boredinthouse · 04/03/2021 11:07

Not yet, 10lb 12 and 11lb 13(and three weeks early) when they were born. They're now 5ft 8 (12) and 5ft 6 (10). They both also started puberty at age 9 which may or may not be related 🤷‍♀️.

imyournextdoorneighbour · 04/03/2021 11:15

Mine. Eldest was on 98th when born and never came down. By year 7 he was the tallest in the school Confused he is now 6'6". His DF was 5'10" and I'm 5'8" so he must be a throwback Smile youngest was the same to start but slowed down by senior school. He finally stopped at 6'2" (same as DH)
