Clothes for slightly older babies

FTM here. Mumsnet has answered SO many of my questions, but I couldn't find a thread about this. My baby is currently in 0-3 month clothes and at the moment I am just dressing him in vest - sleepsuit - cardi/pramsuit if cold/outside.

I'm just wondering what people did when moving on to 3-6 month clothes. It will still likely be quite cold when he's in this size, so I guess still vest, and then do I carry on with sleep suits during the day or move on to legginga and tops all in ones etc. Are these practical? We've had so many gifts of tiny clothes but I'm assuming I'll actually need to buy the bigger ones myself.

TIA

My baby boy we dress in joggers and jumpers or long sleeve too with vest underneath. Joggers I find a lot warmer for them too.

Thatwentbadly · 26/01/2021 20:23

It depends on the weather. I kept mine in vests and sleep suits until they left 3-6 months clothes, this is was about 4 months for DD1 and 5 months for DD2. Then they were crawling and pulling to standing.

spidermomma · 26/01/2021 20:30

My 13mo is still in vests and baby grows. I refuse to dress him
He still has his knitted pram sets to and his knitted cardigan!!!

They grow up to quick and tbh a pair of jeans or tights aren't comfy to wiggle around in!
I don't usually dress mine until their 2 and I have no choice because they dont do baby grows to fit them lol
Oh I just Wana get him out of bed for a squeeze !!!
Baby baby's are the best baby's !

DD stayed in sleepsuits most of the time til she was crawling tbh, I found them much easier than separates at that stage. But an absolute pain in the bum once she started really crawling about so we went to separates. Although saying that she did wear separates when younger on nice days when she didn't want her feet covered up

CupcakesK · 26/01/2021 20:38

Nothing wrong with vests and sleepsuits, but jumpers/cardigans and joggers/leggings over a vest is good too (don’t forget socks!)

By the time he gets to 6 months it might be warmer and then a romper over a long sleeved vest (plus cardigan if it gets cold) would also be ok.

Rockettrain · 26/01/2021 20:40

At 3-6 months mine still wore sleepsuits in the day sometimes but it does start to look a bit like they are still in PJs as they get bigger. We started to move onto tops/jumpers and leggings or similar. I really don’t like jeans on babies though, or dresses particularly, and like babies to still be dressed like babies ie. not just mini versions of adult clothes.

CatandBaby · 26/01/2021 20:45

We moved on to mainly joggers and jumpers at 3 - 6 months, mainly as babygrows seemed a bit too thin for the weather. There's no right or wrong, although personally I can't see the point of dresses or shirts or anything like that.

TheScoresOnTheDoors · 26/01/2021 20:57

Thanks all. I think I'll get some more vests and sleepsuits and try some joggers/socks and sweatshirts/top/cardi over vest to see how we get on with those in the day when its still cold.

Yeah I wouldn't bother with jeans or anything which looks uncomfortable and I imagine dresses are mostly for "best" days for little girls.

DD stayed in babygrows until she could crawl at 10 months, she still sleeps in babygrows now at 14 months. Personally, I don't like small babies in outfits (jeans etc), babygrows are much comfier for them I imagine

spidermomma · 26/01/2021 21:48

Op I have sleep suits for bed then nice Spanish style ones foe day time so you can tell he is dressed not constantly in pjs may I add haha ! Little collars on and things look so sweet and he's always comfy x

AnnaSW1 · 26/01/2021 21:51

Body suit, joggers and cardies Smile

Thatwentbadly · 26/01/2021 21:51

Don’t get jumpers for a baby - far to difficult to get on and off.

Surfdayssun · 26/01/2021 22:10

DS was in sleepsuits until 5.5 months when he started crawling and his legs were either tangled up in the tummy bit somewhere or a foot would appear through the poppers. We then moved into long sleeve vest and joggers with a top/sweatshirt/hoodie depending on weather etc. Sock ons were also a lifesaver for both mine aswell.

RedMarauder · 26/01/2021 22:31

Boys can wear tights as well as tights come in more colours than just pink. My DD baby tights were given to a boy.

I did mainly babygrow/sleep suit until 9-12 months as I wanted both my babies to be comfortable and felt they had forever for clothes with a waist band! Once they’re starting to pull themselves up the babygros become tricky as they drag and get in the way so I swapped to little jogging bottoms and tips and the odd dungarees. You can also get trousers that are Jean type material but soft and with an elastic waist band

VinceNoirsShinyBoots · 27/01/2021 07:42

My DCs were in joggers/leggings, a vest, and a top or cardi pretty much from day one. I just found it easier to fit them over a cloth nappy.

HeyDouglas · 27/01/2021 07:58

At about 4 months I swapped to joggers and vests (long and short sleeve) because I was trying to help differentiate between night and day, mainly for me I think.

movingonup20 · 27/01/2021 08:12

I mostly had mine in a vest, top and dungarees, adding a cardigan if colder. Both mine were will in 3-6 months at nearly a year though

EnglishRose1320 · 27/01/2021 08:15

Ds wore a mix of still baby grows at that age and if it was a cold day a soft fabric pair of dungarees with with either a baby grow underneath or long sleeved top and tights underneath- he never kept socks on!

TheScoresOnTheDoors · 27/01/2021 08:47

Thanks everyone. I've seen lovely tights as well so will also give those a go.

Leggings are good, and they do really nice soft ones.

I did a mix to be honest but always felt the material and went with the softest I could.

DappledThings · 27/01/2021 08:52

I hates babygrows, found all the poppers so fiddly and annoying so mine were out of them early. Bodysuits and dungarees were my go to generally. Short or long in. Other sleeve and leg depending on the weather plus additional layers as needed.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 27/01/2021 11:56

I also hate baby grows. I wanted to keep them as pj's really as part of a night routine. I moved to joggers/vest/long sleeved tshirt pretty quickly. Or a thicker jumper type thing if it was really cold.

As for moving up sizes, just move up when the baby is big enough. It makes no sense squeezing a baby into clothes that dont fit just to keep the size and baby ages in line. My son is 10 months old and in 12-18month clothes. They're a bit baggy but its fine.

Superscientist · 27/01/2021 14:43

From a couple of weeks we have done clothes in the day. We started when it was hot and it helped to have a short sleeved vest with leggings which we could easily take on and off depending on how warm she was.

I have continued and we wear leggings and t-shirts or long sleeved vests and dungarees in the day time. If we go out we have cardigans or a snowsuit. We have issues with reflux and I find it easier to only have to change half an outfit leggings or tshirt depending on where she has been sick.
There are days when she stays in sleepsuits and vests and days where she's still the sleepsuit from the night all day. I do find it helpful to have something that separates the long days and the long nights. There are lots of clothes options out there that aren't fussy and restrictive.

Tier500 · 27/01/2021 15:13

With DC1 3-6 was in summer so I put him in outfits in the day as it was too hot for sleepsuits. DC2 is 3 months now and I’ll be keeping her in sleepsuits and a cardigan mainly so I don’t have to faff around with socks for her when it’s so cold
