First Jabs - blue light to hospital

I'm so worried. At my wits end.

My grandson has been rushed to hospital just now.

He had his 8 week 'jabs' today. Two hours later he started crying/very unsettled.

This evening whilst feeding he stopped breathing and his lips and face turned blue. My daughter blew on his face three times before he took a breath. She said it was ages between blowing on his face because she was absolutely frozen and petrified and at first didn't know what to do.

She rang his outreach nurse who said ring 111. They sent an ambulance. They are being blue lighted to hospital because of temp and resps (paramedic's words).

Has anyone else encountered such a reaction to these jabs?

He was 7 weeks premature. He's literally 1 wk old - adjusted age.

My heart is beating out of my chest

Poor thing at least he’s in the correct place to be monitored and given any treatment needed
I hope he is ok it must be very worrying.
Like anything vaccinations can v v rarely have side effects. There is a scheme I think it’s called yellow card where you can report this.

I hope he is better soon. Going forward you can request to split up any further vaccinations and just have one at a time and to wait s bit afterwards in the surgery
One of my dc had their jabs at the hospital and we waited for 6 hours after to be monitored

Agree, they are in the right place to be monitored. Maybe he has an egg allergy, which many vaccines a cultured on. They do make egg free versions of the common one though, but he'd need testing to see if that is the issue.

As a side note, your daughter might feel more confident if she did a baby/toddler first aid and resus course.

Terracottasaur · 11/01/2021 22:00

How scary, I’m so sorry. He’s in the right place now, but hopefully he will be home safe soon.

That is scary. Your daughter did well to get him breathing again. You don't need to worry now, he will be ok where he is and hopefully over the worst. I'd say he was too young for the jabs if early. I would delay the next round for sure and split as pp suggested. Its a lot for a little one to cope with.

Cactusowl · 11/01/2021 22:10

I hope you get some positive news soon Flowers

Aww bless, say out loud a few times “he’s safe and getting the appropriate care” I use this technique when I’m on the verge of panic and it’s true he is in safe hands but what a horrible thing to happen

I was going to say the same, she did a job job but the course would give more confidence. I did one last month and it was quite reassuring.

Good job

Well done to your daughter for having the presence of mind to know what to do....

yankeedoodledandee · 11/01/2021 22:19

He is in the best place Thanks

I echo a course in infant first aid, although I don't know how they would be delivered even after lockdown as tiers are likely to be quite strict. The doctors will be able to advise you DD on the basics, she did well, really well.

As a side note I would considering flagging up that a nurse told your DD to phone 111 when her child had stopped breathing. It's a 999 call. A nurse should be fully aware of that.

itsgettingweird · 11/01/2021 22:20

Scary times but well done your DD for reacting so quickly when so panicked.

Could be any number of things as mentioned here. Egg allergy reaction or even temperature reaction as can happen after vaccine. He may have had a febrile convulsion?

He's in the right place though and they'll get to the bottom of it Thanks

I know it’s easier said than done but try not to worry too much. Ive seen it many times it’s very common in kids to become unwell following injections. Some ambulance services have a policy that no child under 12 months stays at home without an appropriate further care in place, which is unlikely to be put in place at 10pm. Not worth risking their registration even if they weren’t worried.

wheretoyougonow · 11/01/2021 22:23

The waiting and feeling useless is so awful. Your daughter has done a brilliant job and hopefully you'll get an update soon which will be positive news Thanks

CatVsChristmasTree · 11/01/2021 22:25

How frightening for your poor DD,so glad little one is okay. 8 week jabs would have included the Meningitis B one which is well known to cause a fever (hence the Calpol protocol) so I'd guess it was that one he reacted to.

Also shocked the nurse didn't tell her to call 999 though.

Vallmo47 · 11/01/2021 22:26

I’m so sorry. I hope you have support while you wait for news. How very awful. 🥰

Ldnmum7 · 11/01/2021 22:27

Could be febrile convulsion? I hope he's ok. How scary for your daughter

CatVsChristmasTree · 11/01/2021 22:27

Make sure she reports it using the Yellow Card scheme, I think the Men B one is still being monitored, but even if it isn't can still be reported.

Missmonkeypenny · 11/01/2021 22:30

My son reacted badly after the 8 week jabs. Inconsolable crying and a rash which wouldn't fade so we ended up in a&e. Thankfully nothing sinister but I did his 12 week ones at 4 months and his 16 week ones at 6 months rather than having them close together which is absolutely okay to do. My husband is a paramedic and they will always take a baby under 1 into hospital if an ambulance is called.

firsttimemumma123 · 11/01/2021 22:30

The EXACT same thing happened to my daughter! By the time we got to hospital she was asleep, she slept the whole 3 HOURS we were waiting to see someone and they said they didnt know what was wrong and she seemed fine now then sent us home! So scary but atleast she was ok

Theonlyoneiknow · 11/01/2021 22:43

My DD was very susceptible to febrile convulsions post vaccination so we spread them out as other posters have suggested. Hope all is ok OP

2018SoFarSoGreat · 11/01/2021 22:49

how scary, OP. Sorry. What a worry for you all, but he's in good hands.

Well done, to your daughter. She did well.

NoOneOwnsTheRainbow · 11/01/2021 22:57

We had a bad reaction to the 8 week immunisations, too. For us, it was the rotavirus one that caused the issue.

I insisted on postponing the next lot until the GP knew what the problem was. Got made to feel like a crazy person for not wanting to put my baby through that a second time!

fairyannie · 11/01/2021 22:58

Also shocked the nurse didn't tell her to call 999 though.

My daughter mentioned that the nurse had said that the dose of calpol should be 1.5ml.

Perhaps he should have had the 'full' 2.5ml?

He had calpol at 9am, 1pm and 7pm as instructed.

He was 4lb 1oz at birth. Now 8lb.

No real update but he's been seen by a doctor and is now waiting to see another. His soft spot is sunken but my daughter had mentioned that she was feeding more frequently but felt that he wasn't taking as much as usual. So perhaps a little dehydrated?

After all these reassuring posts my heart rate is a little calmer.

As an aside - he was due 5th Jan. He's already got two teeth - came a couple of weeks ago. Shock
