hi,
so we want our son to have alpro junior milk when he no longer needs formula at 1 but we brought some to try and get him used to it. can i start replacing some of his bottles with the soya milk in a cup (as we want to wean off bottles too) and see how it goes, or would i have to wait? he also eats a lot of food and still drinks a fair bit of milk so milk isn't a MUST.
TIA Smile

Could you use it in cereal first? Is he on dairy free formula?

Ohalrightthen · 06/01/2021 20:58

Pretty sure you're not supposed to give soy products to littlies, especially boys. Could you try something like oat milk instead?

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 21:00

Not supposed to give soya formula under the age of 6 months. There aren't other warnings about using soya after that age

Just wait until he gets to one when you and put it in a sippy cup

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 06/01/2021 21:17

Definitely try oat milk rather than soy. Soy can cause male infertility. But I wouldn't bother with either before 1.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 21:22

Alpro 1+ is tailored for that age group
Oat milk may not have the correct nutrients/fat content

mrsed1987 · 06/01/2021 21:22

Can someone show me a link to evidence of it causing male infertility?

scully29 · 06/01/2021 21:26

soy does not cause infertility what nonsense!

Blueroses99 · 06/01/2021 21:32

www.nhs.uk/news/pregnancy-and-child/soya-based-food-and-male-fertility/

Soya does not cause male infertility.

OP, you can use Soya growing up milk in cooking, with cereal etc but I don’t think it is meant as a drink until age 1. If you do decide to use oat or alternative milks, check the nutrition information carefully, not all plant based milks are equal and some contain far fewer nutrients than others.

I'd be concerned about giving soya milk to a baby, especially a baby boy, because of the oestrogen it contains.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 22:14

That's talking about soya infant formula given as the main food to a baby. Op is talking about soya milk given as an addition to solid foods to a baby of age 1. Its not the same thing

This article is all about why soya milk is not suitable as formula for a baby under 12 months.

Thatwentbadly · 06/01/2021 22:27

Alpro growing up milk and Oatley Barista or Asda own oat milks are all suitable for children over the age of 1.

Who wrote the article though? That's an opinion piece not medical facts

Thats about soya infant formula in infants under the age of 1 too not soya milk after the age of 1 alongside food

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 07/01/2021 07:45

We were advised to introduce soy products slowly and in very small amounts, and definitely not before 1. Apparently soya is a common allergen for very young children (one they usually grow out of). So if I were you I’d probable add a little to his cereal for a couple of days, and if no reactions increase from there.

HOWEVER ds was under the care of a paediatrician for a pretty severe milk allergy, and I was also advise to reduce the amount of soy in my own diet for his benefit (breastfeeding). So I’m not sure if the allergy information/age is true of all children or more so for those with CMPA.

Powerfulpam · 07/01/2021 07:45

Important to consider the dental impact of plant based milks. This article may be a starting point for you www.nature.com/articles/s41415-020-2120-7

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 07/01/2021 07:51

Whilst he no longer needs formula after 1, it’s generally better to give the formula up to 1, then get him used to whatever you’re changing it to after he turns 1.

Is the soy a dietary preference or because he has CMPA? If the latter, be aware that babies with a milk allergy very often also have a soya allergy. As others have said, oat milk is another good option, but as there aren’t any marketed as being fortified for toddlers you have to do some research in to which is the most suitable.

Again this is about soya formula for under 1s.
