Cradle cap question

lockdownpregnancy · 23/12/2020 08:27

Hi all!
My baby has cradle cap on his head and mostly on his forehead 😭
I already know to wash his hair everyday, baby oil and a soft brush to get it off, but I wanted to know how often can you use the brush? Every day? Every other day?
I didn't want to overdo it and make his head sore as it's not all off yet.
Many thanks

We were oiling in the morning and gently rubbing in the evening. We made. Slow progress then we spoke to our GP who said we didn't need to be as cautious so we used a warm-hot flannel and rubbed firmly, within two days it had pretty much gone. We continued for the rest of the week to keep on top of it and it hasn't returned

Felinewoman · 23/12/2020 11:36

It will go away with time. You shouldn't wash your baby excessively anyway.
My 11 month old still has some. Doesn't bother anyone

mindutopia · 23/12/2020 11:46

I would use coconut or olive oil rather than baby oil as less chemicals and fragrance. I tended to do it every 2-3 days as there's no reason to cause any irritation and it will all eventually come off with persistence.

We used jojoba oil for DD she had it for a couple of months Don't wash it to often tho it will dry out the skin and prolong it

lockdownpregnancy · 23/12/2020 21:17

Thank you ladies. We are bathing him abs washing his hair every day but will use the brush to get rid of the flakes every other day, as don't want to irritate his skin abs make it red and sore!

We had a bad case of this. I think we solved it by piling on emollient cream several times a day and it gradually peeled off by itself.

TooMinty · 23/12/2020 21:22

I know it looks rubbish but it doesn't do them any harm. But too much messing with it might hurt. They grow out of it soon enough x

Carrotcakey · 23/12/2020 21:23

Is it the pourty brush you are using? I used this every day on DD2s awful cradle cap (gently obviously!) but it never caused any irritation.

DoveGreylove · 23/12/2020 21:31

Coconut oil every night, then again in the morning with a gentle comb to get the skin off.

Backbee · 23/12/2020 21:32

I know this is probably gross, but I absolutely loved combing DS' out, it was so satisfying. To be honest it doesn't bother them so you could leave it, but I used to pop some coconut oil in when he first got into the bath, leave it a few mins, and then combed through before rinsing and using a gentle shampoo- it cleared it quickly and his scalp was never sore.

Sparky888 · 23/12/2020 21:35

Agree the Pourty Brush. It feels quite firm, but baby didn’t care abs it worked brilliantly. I did it every day for 3 days.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 23/12/2020 21:39

Get some Dentinox from the supermarket (shampoo for baby cradle cap). DD's would come straight off after a couple of gentle applications and a soft brush. Brilliant stuff.

Northernsoullover · 23/12/2020 21:42

Posters who say it doesn't do any harm. It itches! My son at 4months had awful cradle cap and he used to rub his head on his fathers stubble. I got rid of it by using baby oil. It took his hair off too Grin.

pinknsparkly · 23/12/2020 21:44

We'd been using coconut oil overnight and a comb without much luck (I had left it for months but she developed a habit of scratching her head while feeding so looked like she constantly had terrible dandruff!). A friend recommended Johnson's cottontouch hair and scalp oil (www.boots.com/johnsons-cottontouch-hair-scalp-oil-300ml-10260563). It only took us two attempts and she was completely clear! I was astounded to be honest!! Highly highly recommend it

Scrub their head with a flannel/ cheeky wipe.

Aria999 · 24/12/2020 01:11

We got great advice from our pediatrician which cured it in about a month.

Put olive oil on the head. Leave 20 minutes. Scrape off with a cradle cap comb. Wash head.

We did it about once every 4 days (basically whenever it started coming back) then one day it just didn't come back.

Caspianberg · 24/12/2020 07:29

Oil cradle cap - we use burts bees
Leave 1-2 hrs.
Use warm flannel and brush it off with a little scrubbing.
Wash in bath

This got it off in 3 goes, gradually taking a bit off. He had it on his eyebrows also. I would leave it 2 days in between then repeat.

It never came back.

I probably wouldn’t wash his hair daily unless needed. Cradle cap is basically body overproducing oils so excess washing can cause more.

lockdownpregnancy · 26/12/2020 12:03

Well over the last few days by boys cradle cap on his forehead has gotten so bad despite our best efforts with the methods above!
His forehead is covered and everyday he wakes up with even more his forehead. It's nearly covered his whole forehead now but only tiny bits in his hair!
I've requested an appointment with doctor but unlikely they will see me!
What do I do! It's awful bless him! 😭

I found this to work brilliantly:

  • coconut oil left in for about 30 mins before bath
  • aveeno baby soap massaged into hair in bath
  • rinse
  • dry thoroughly with towel - think exfoliate.

That worked for us at least

lockdownpregnancy · 26/12/2020 17:32

Thank you @OhToBeASeahorse but it's not his hair that's the problem it's his forehead so I can't shampoo his forehead 😭😭😫😫

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 26/12/2020 17:51

@lockdownpregnancy - you can shampoo his forehead if needed. Try oiling it, leaving a bit them brushing with clean toothbrush on forehead then a damp flannel rub in circles to brush off excess. Then wash head/ face with a general baby all in one wash to remove oil. Repeat every other day for the week.
Honestly, mine had it in eyebrows and on forehead also, and it just needs soaking in the oil then brushed off somehow. It won’t come off alone

I think there is a special wash in the uk you can get at pharmacist if you ask them also

beenHerebefour · 26/12/2020 17:54

We use dermol 500 as a wash and lotion and a soft brush to then brush off we have used it on face as well
Ours was connected to cmpa as soon as she was dairy free it cleared up

KLM19 · 27/12/2020 19:36

@lockdownpregnancy look up Kokoso you will never look back!!

This! I was worried about a 'non-natural' solution but it worked almost instantly, after weeks of olive oil etc.
MistletoeandGin · 27/12/2020 19:43

We tried all sorts of natural methods and it just kept coming back. Tried dentinox as a last resort and it was gone in a couple of days. Never came back.
