My baby HATES tummy time

Hi ladies.
My post is pretty much the subject header! DS absolutely hates being on his tummy. He screams blue murder!
My concern is, is that he won't roll over if he hates being on his tummy.
I have tried tummy time various times and it doesn't last any longer than 10 seconds!
I've tried a rolled up towel, I even have a tummy time mat/seat my friend bought me. I've tried various ways of tummy time and he hates them all!
All this stuff on google saying it will affect your baby's development if things aren't done in the right order?!?!
DS is 10 weeks and he is already holding his head up by himself and turning it from left to right. He also grabs my hands and tries to pull himself to sitting and loves being sat up on my lap, so I don't think he's slow in the development side of things, so far.
Am I worrying over nothing here? Is tummy time really THAT important??

We did it once a week most as my DS had terrible reflux and would just scream.
He was always well ahead of his peers when it came to his milestones and was running about (literally!) at 10 months.
My mum and MIL never did it with any of their kids.
I wouldn't worry!

Most of them do tbh

Tummy time wasn't a "thing" when DS17 was that age.... he can hold his head up ;)

It's just about making sure you don't keep baby on their back 100% of the time.

randomsabreuse · 01/12/2020 13:11

Sling time counts for strengthening. DD rolled front to back early. Didn't do back to front until she realised crawling was fun...

Did hated it but midwife suggested having her lying on her front on my chest. So head above my chest and tummy to tummy. She would like for ages like that

Echobelly · 01/12/2020 13:18

Humanity seems to have done fine without tummy time until about 10 years ago. I'd leave off it for now and maybe try it again later to see if DS likes it more by then.

DarkMintChocolate · 01/12/2020 13:18

DGS used to fall asleep every time, his parents put him on his tummy....

October89 · 01/12/2020 17:45

My 5 month old hates it too. I hardly ever do it with her and she was still very early with head control. She can now almost sit unassisted. I'm not too worried about it as she seems to be developing perfectly.

Thank you ladies! I appreciated you all taking the time to comment ❤️

My DS threw up within seconds of been put on front. He hated it. The whole thing felt traumatic and I barely did it. I relaxed about not doing it with DD.

They didn't have much tummy time at all. Both of them are completely fine in their movements and tone etc. The only thing missing in their baby books is a date they rolled over.

Userzzz · 01/12/2020 20:13

I don’t do it much with my kids and they are fine. Always just seemed like a torture session for them. Their necks will naturally strengthen just from holding their heads. I don’t think the issue should be forced by putting them on their stomachs for too long if they are uncomfortable.

ElspethFlashman · 01/12/2020 20:15

I made a half hearted effort with #1 but then with #2 realised it was much more fun to plonk them on my chest in bed and make funny faces at them.

I still can't say I did it every day though!

MostDefinitelyNot · 01/12/2020 20:17

DS did not like it either and it also made him sick sometimes (horrible reflux)
I second letting baby lay on your chest. You can slowly lean back further and further until you are laying flat so baby can slowly get used to it. If you happen to have a recliner it would be easier to do this.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 01/12/2020 20:21

I don't understand this whole obsession with tummy time. I wouldn't want to be stuck on my stomach in the floor either. It's a load of shite.
It wasn't such a big deal when my first was born, don't remember doing it until he rolled over himself with my second, he absolutely hated it and I never forced it. They walked at 10 and 10 and a half months.
Not having "tummy time" will not hold them back.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 01/12/2020 20:23

And I didn't mean you are obsessed there OP, I mean health visitors.

Thatwentbadly · 01/12/2020 20:24

Both my kids had reflux so hated tummy time so I didn’t do it. DD1 rolled at the day before she turned 12 weeks and DD2 at 14 weeks. They were fine when they could roll themselves onto their tummy.

Begin typing ‘baby hates’ into Google and see the top suggestions. All the babies hate it Grin

lockdownpregnancy · 01/12/2020 21:54

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion I know what you mean don't worry 🥰🥰
@SomethingOnce you're right there!
I'm not even going to bother with it going forward. As others have said why distress my
Baby when he can develop it naturally on his own time.
I'm sure once he's rolled over by himself he won't be as stressed! I suppose he's got to at some point if he wants to start crawling! 🤪
He can do it when he's ready. I'm not going to force it on him
Thank you again ladies!

Most babies hate it. I tried a bit with first, never bothered with second and he rolled pretty early and sat up pretty early too. It’s bollocks in my opinion

lockdownpregnancy · 02/12/2020 13:27

@Fatas your post made me chuckle! It is bollocks, you're right!! 🤣🤣

My daughter hated it as well. She’d scream the place down every time I tried to get her to do tummy time. Her solution was to learn to sit instead and she was independently sitting at four months. I wouldn’t stress yourself about it he will do what works for him.

Happyheartlovelife · 02/12/2020 16:11

Both my kids hated tummy time

They are now 8 and 5. Both did very well. I literally barely did it with my first

Mummywantsaweewee · 02/12/2020 21:22

Ds hated it too. I used to hold him in my arms on his tummy (so he still uses the same muscles). I also tried rolling a blanket up like a fat sausage so he wasn’t flat on tummy but leaning on the roll, with a black and white pattern Muslim under and one or two toys. He seemed to like that!
I used to carry him a lot and he was holding his own head up from about 1 week old, you can carry baby in a carrier while you get on with stuff and it still strengthens the same muscles. Don’t worry too much about it, they get there in their own time! I spent far too long worrying about bloody tummy time! Smile

Mummywantsaweewee · 02/12/2020 21:22

Bloody phone. A black and white muslin!!

mintich · 02/12/2020 21:25

My daughter liked tummy time, but never ever rolled over! She went straight to sitting. She has no developmental problems at all

lockdownpregnancy · 02/12/2020 21:33

After reading all of your comments I'm not going to give it a second thought now. DS is holding is head up and has been for over a month now, but now he's 10 weeks he's a lot more steady with it.
He also grabs my hands and tries to pull himself up to sitting and has taken to liking sitting up on my lap.
I think he likes to see what's going on (nosey, just like me 🤣). Clearly a lot more interesting than being on his back staring at the ceiling or his jungle gym!
Thank you again ladies! ❤️
