How do you dress your baby?

Struggling to know what to put DS in at 7 weeks old. In the house he only wears a single layer - a sleepsuit as we have the heating on (set to 20) and he goes in his sleeping bag at night. When he goes out we out a pram suit over a sleep suit. We used vests before we used the sleeping bag.

Is this enough? His neck sometimes feels cold if he is lying on me but then his chest and back aren’t, but I’m starting to wonder if he isn’t warm enough. The midwife in the hospital TERRIFIED me that if he gets too hot it could be really bad for him and I’m really panicky about SIDS. But I wonder if I’m not keeping him warm enough?

What does/did you baby wear for different activities? I’ve tried him in a hat outside and it just comes off all the time...

Do you have him in a vest and a sleep suit? 20 degrees isn't super warm. I keep my house at that and I am a warm person and I would be cold in just a sleep suit.

GlenQuagmire · 30/11/2020 08:32

Not during the day we don’t no...maybe I will try one. I’m just so scared of him over heating

Another vote for vest and sleep suit in the house. I'd also add a cardigan before his snowsuit if you are going outside.

At that age and temp I'd have had an extra layer. I'd have had a short sleeved bodysuit under the sleepsuit too.

It's about 8 degrees outside here today. I'd probably have gone for bodysuit, sleepsuit and pramsuit or star wrap to go out and about.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/11/2020 08:35

I would say he needs a vest and sleep suit as a minimum.

Youvegotafriendinme · 30/11/2020 08:37

Inside a vest and a baby grow then outside I’d add another layer (pram suit) and blanket

CupcakesK · 30/11/2020 08:37

I wouldn’t be worried about over heating him during the day when awake. Definitely sleepsuit and vest, or vest and leggings&jumper for the day. A good rule is one extra layer than you are wearing (which is usually the vest)

October2020 · 30/11/2020 08:40

Vest and babygrow in house at least, sometimes a jumper. Temp is 20 too.
Outside I add a cardi and a pramsuit plus a hat.
Think about all the babies who survived the 34° days this summer...

SylvieSangFroid · 30/11/2020 08:42

Vest and sleep suit in the house. Sometimes I also put a cardi on top, but maybe my house was colder than yours.

I was told that newborns need one layer more than adults, so whatever you're wearing; that plus one more (thin) layer.

GlenQuagmire · 30/11/2020 08:46

Should he be wearing a vest under his sleepsuit in his sleeping bag too? We keep the house at 18 overnight and it’s a 2.5 tog.

I feel bad to think he might be too cold, I’ve got PN anxiety which is why I’m so panicked about the heat.

I would put way more layers on. When it’s 20 degrees indoors it’s cool to me in winter. Ours is usually 19-22 degrees.

It’s currently 20.1 in living room ( have WiFi thermometers). Ds1 is 7 months. He’s wearing short sleeve vest, long sleepsuit with feet, pair thick socks over the top, and knitted cardigan. He also currently napping so laying under a blanket as well.

At 7 weeks they get colder even quicker. I would have vest under sleepsuit at minimum, and cardigan on and off depending on how warm they feel

I find this really hard because I’m a cold person - I go to bed in a vest top, jumper, fleece trousers and socks, but DH is a hot person and wears nothing but underwear! so I never know about the extra layer thing as we feel so differently!

Our midwife told us to always dress your baby in similar to what your wearing plus one layer. He was born during a heat wave and we was at a bit of a loss as to what to dress him in but following that helped us lots.

Vest and sleepsuit should be enough for the day. I'd consider pram suit, hat and possibly a cardigan as well as the vest when you go out depending on the temp outside

mistermagpie · 30/11/2020 08:48

I would have more on than that. My babies were always in a vest and sleep suit at night (except the one that was born in July).

My youngest was born last November and she was always in a vest and sleep suit during the day too. Our heating is usually at 21.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 30/11/2020 08:49

Definitely vest and sleep suit during the day and night, with sleeping bag for bed and pramsuit, with a blanket for pram

18 degrees at night, most guidelines say two layers on top and one lower with sleeping bag. So short or long sleeve vest depending on how cold you think they get, plus sleepsuit.

mistermagpie · 30/11/2020 08:50

Yeah the advice to how many layers you wear plus one is good, I followed that.

My daughter (aged one) is a cold baby, she has a heater in her room and vest/pyjamas plus a gro bag and a blanket at night or she can't sleep. I'm exactly the same. My eldest son could sleep naked with nothing and still be hot though, so it is confusing!

Thefirsttime · 30/11/2020 08:50

Another vote for vest and sleepsuit as a minimum in the house. And outside I’d add a cardigan and pramsuit.

The usual advice is one more layer than you’re wearing and presumably you’re not walking around the house naked! A sleepsuit on its own in the house sounds not enough even though your house is 20 degrees.

Thanks. This actually sounds like what we did, thinking about it. So ignore my last post and graphic op! Perhaps it means vest AND sleepsuit rather than either / or.
Caspianberg · 30/11/2020 08:58

I think a lot of the sleeping bag guidlines show 16-18 guides and 18-20 guides also, so 18 fits in either category. But I think just see what suits you

I know they shouldn’t overheat, but we had the opposite this summer when ds was about the same age and our room was 25+ degrees most evenings. Which that darn grow egg says is deadly... but it’s a normal temperature in warm climates and he slept fine ( just in sleeping bag with vest or just nappy for a few nights).

It’s confusing to new parents isn’t it

Fleetwoodmacs · 30/11/2020 09:02

Both mine would usually have vest and sleepsuit during the day and same with a 2.5 bag at night. Any more than that and they would get red and cry, so I think to an extent you can be guided by them.

I'm someone that always worried about overheating too, but it turns out they hate the warmth anyway!

GlenQuagmire · 30/11/2020 09:04

I’ve turned the heating up too!

OP posts:
bluebearss · 30/11/2020 09:06

I'd have a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog bag for an 18 degree room with mine. His room is normally 20 degrees in the early evening and will drop to 18-19 throughout the night and that's what he stays in.

I'd say just add a vest and try not to worry too much

ImaSababa · 30/11/2020 09:39

Baby DD wears a long sleeved long legged sleep suit at night. During the day she wears a sleeveless onesie, with a long sleeved one (or a cardie) over the top, a pair of leggings, and socks. Hat and hooded coat if we go out.
