How do you dress your baby?

Struggling to know what to put DS in at 7 weeks old. In the house he only wears a single layer - a sleepsuit as we have the heating on (set to 20) and he goes in his sleeping bag at night. When he goes out we out a pram suit over a sleep suit. We used vests before we used the sleeping bag.

Is this enough? His neck sometimes feels cold if he is lying on me but then his chest and back aren’t, but I’m starting to wonder if he isn’t warm enough. The midwife in the hospital TERRIFIED me that if he gets too hot it could be really bad for him and I’m really panicky about SIDS. But I wonder if I’m not keeping him warm enough?

What does/did you baby wear for different activities? I’ve tried him in a hat outside and it just comes off all the time...

At 7 weeks it was late Jan so prob similar weather. Always a short sleeved vest under sleepsuit and then if hands and toes feel cold, socks and gloves

Going out it depends on your pramsuit - some are basically a few layers of material and some are properly thick and snuggly. If it's the latter I'd not put another layer on over the sleepsuit but of it's thinner I would.
Once they were on outfits it was trousers, vest and t-shirt - always one long one short for inside

DD is 12 weeks old
I dress her in a short sleeved vest and sleepsuit. At night our bedroom is 20 degrees and she has been in a 1 tog swaddle suit (love to dream) but I've just bought a 2.5 tog one as I think she needs something warmer.
For daytime naps she's often on us so our body heat keeps her warm!
When I take her out in the pram I add two layers (pram suit or star wrap plus blanket) and a hat.
We're not going out in the car much (nowhere to go!) but when we do I strap her in with just vest and sleepsuit on, then put a thick blanket over her plus hat.

You can check whether their temperature is ok by touching their hands which should be cool/lukewarm but not cold or hot. And also neck/chest which should obviously be warm.

It is tricky, I was anxious with DC1 too and he was a warm baby so he didn't need as many layers. They are also 3.5 years apart though so opposite seasons and it's difficult to compare.

Night time is easier I think because if you've got a room temp and are using sleeping bags the instructions tell you what you should have on baby while you get your confidence in deciding (stopped any arguments between DP and me too 😂). I always err on the side of the minimum clothing it suggests at night as they'll soon wake up and tell you if they're cold.
Day time, a vest and sleepsuit indoors was what we went for on those sorts of days, sometimes with a cardigan and a pair of socks with the sleepsuit.

If you look on the Lullaby Trust website, they have a guide to layers at night with sleeping bags. I’m fairly sure that where the temperature is 18-20c, they recommend a long-sleeved vest (possibly a sleepsuit) and a 2.5 tog bag. I personally think they err on the side of under-dressing babies but they are the safe sleep charity! And it does depend on the baby.

Mine is older now but in similar temperatures, he wears a short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 yoga bag. Today, he’s wearing woolly leggings, long-sleeved vest, top and cardigan, which is one more layer than me. If he was at the sleepsuit stage, it would be short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and cardigan.

Hi op if you go to the gro company website there is a section for night time called "what should my baby wear" or something like that. It asks you babies age, weight and the temp in your house and it tells you what they should be wearing and would tog sleep bag, it really put my mind at rest, I used it along side the gro egg thermonuclear but I'm sure it doesn't matter if you have one as long as you know the room temperature. Our house is 18-20 degrees but it's old so a bit draughty! Newborn is in short sleeve vest & sleepsuit all day and I add cardi or snow suit to go out, plus blanket, and at night time we're just using a cellular blanket or two depending on how hot or cold she is.

Most of the leading sleeping bag brands have guides on what to dress baby in for sleep based on room temp. Have a look at Grobag & Ergopouch and definitely get a room thermometer if you don’t have one!

At night it’s true that it’s best for baby to be too cold than too hot, as they’ll wake you if they are cold.

Our house is 19-20 degrees at the moment and in the day my 9 month old is in a short sleeve vest, tracksuit & socks. Or, vest, sleepsuit & cardigan.

At night it gets cooler (18-19) so he’s in a 3.5 tog sleepbag with just a sleepsuit with feet underneath.

This is off one of the sleeping bag companies advising what to put baby in at night.

During the day my baby wears vest and sleep suit.

I'd definitely have a vest and sleep suit. Anywhere between 18 and 21 in our living room at the moment and it's been long sleeved vest and jumper for quite a while now. (She is older).
Bedtime room is between 17-18 and long sleeved vest, babygrow and 2.5 tog.
