Toddler son has got red raw bum from diarrhoea - HELP

Hello experienced mummies, my toddler has caught a bug and his diarrhoea got so bad today that he is getting so sore. He poops about 5-6 times a day and it's watery. Now even before we take the nappy off he is so scared because it seems to hurt so much. It's tears all the way through and it's so unlike him,
he's usually such a tough cookie, falls over and hurts himself, hands bleeding, big bruise on head but no tears.

Is there a certain cream you recommend? I know it'll get better but when your child is hurting you want to do anything to make them feel better.

metanium is great.
if you usually use wipes - swap them for flannel & warm water for now. or sit him in the bath or washing up bowl with warm water.

Puppydogg1 · 12/11/2020 19:32

When my little boy had a really sore bum the GP prescribed Orabase, it's like a gritty paste that you put on the really sore bits and use normal cream everywhere else. It sticks to the skin and doesn't need to be wiped off every nappy change so it creates a protective layer

randomsabreuse · 12/11/2020 19:32

Metanium and switch to cotton wool and water rather than wipes.

Lots of luke warm baths, so his skin can rest. Then the cream. Calpol to take pain of skin away. Lots of cuddles and let air get to the area much as possible.

Breastfeedingworries · 12/11/2020 19:33

Cotton wool not wipes ect when washing.

ChubbyMumFromSkye · 12/11/2020 19:34

Metamium is the best nappy rash cream - and heals all other cuts & broken skin too!

troppibambini · 12/11/2020 19:37

Yes to metanium by far the best.
Make sure his bum is completely dry before it goes on and a very thin layer works best.

Dookie · 12/11/2020 19:47

Another vote for Metanium here

Suzi888 · 12/11/2020 19:47

I always used zinc and castor oil and my DD never had nappy rash, my mum used it on me as a baby too.

TJ17 · 12/11/2020 19:55

They say to let air to it too so I'd say let him run around without a nappy for a bit bit given his issue might be risky 😅 I can't rate sudocrem highly enough too

willowywillow · 12/11/2020 20:03

Zinc and castor oil cream.

shesgonebatshitagain · 12/11/2020 20:09

If the rash gets to look like eczema then it might be slightly fungal from the moisture and the GP can prescribe a mild topical cream which will work wonders too

Thank you so much mamas for all your answers, it looks as though I'm sending DH out now to get Metanium.

@Breastfeedingworries @Dontforgetyourbrolly
No wiping, baths it is to clean. I actually did this in the late afternoon after dinner (last poo before bed) and he was happy in the bath but really upset again when out.

@Pickypolly He is ok in himself, always busy but he does get more TV time at the moment as he's so upset after the nappy change and I know it'll make him happy, it's an exception as he's poorly. You can see he's not too well, he's drinking his normal amount of water and also still eating. Good breakfast (porridge), lunch and dinner isn't great. He's actually watching peppa whilst dinner at the moment which I don't usually do but this way I get him to eat something. He's usually a fab eater, eats loads and anything, no distractions needed.

His temperature is slight raised but not bad (37.5-37.8). Before the pandemic he used to get really bad fevers.

@Margaritawithlime I will call the GP tomorrow just in case, you are right - good idea!

DH is now on his way to the chemist. I called the local one to check it they have it and they said they do.

If it doesn’t help (but it probably will, it’s fab!) you can get something called cavillon spray (I buy from Amazon) it’s used in palliative care for people with bedsores but is also great for nappy rash (a hospice nurse caring for my mum recommended it for my daughter) you spray it on clean dry skin and it forms a waterproof barrier that wee and poo can’t penetrate so it allows the skin underneath to heal. It’s bloody brilliant! My DD had blazing nappy rash after an ear infection and we just couldn’t shift it. Remembered the advice from the nurse and within 24 hours it was loads better and 48 hours virtually gone. Total game changer. Not cheap (approx £10 for a small bottle) but a little goes a long way and worth it to have a happy child again!
Good luck, hope you get him sorted xxx

EggysMom · 12/11/2020 21:29

I hope the Metanium helps - I swear by it for our disabled son who is still in nappies (age 11) when he gets diarrhoea.

Gojetter95 · 12/11/2020 21:38

Yet another vote for metanium. Worked miracles!

pickledplumjam · 12/11/2020 22:24

I'd give him the BRAT (Bananas/rice/applesauce/toast) diet until he's solid again with lots and lots of diluted juice or water.

Peachypips78 · 13/11/2020 08:49

Am I the only one waiting to hear how the bum is with bated breath??!!

Hartleyhare1206 · 13/11/2020 09:27

@Peachypips78 I kind of am too 🤣🤦‍♀️

LolaSmiles · 13/11/2020 09:28

Weleda nappy cream was amazing for my DC, but friends have also used Metanium.

womaninatightspot · 13/11/2020 09:33

Didn't get on with metanium but bepanthen worked for us. Make sure the skin is clean and then smother. No baby wipes, water and soft cloth. I used to cut up old towels and use them as babywipes at home.

frolicmum · 13/11/2020 11:03

@Peachypips78 @Hartleyhare1206 ok I added more detail than you may need but why not:

He didnt poo in the night (I actually got up at 2 to check lol and woke us at 4 as he was crying) but that must have helped a little as no poo was on it all night. We popped him in the bath this morning at 7 to get all the wee off it, he then pooped about half an hour later and we popped him in the shower dried it all and then applied the cream again. His temperature was 37.8 and he wasn't given any pain relief before bed or in the night. He didn't want his porridge but ate toast with peanut butter (at the moment I don't really care as long as some foods goes in there)

The nanny gave him another bath after another poo at around 09:30 and she said it already looks better.

We have a telephone / video appointment with the GP at 11:30.

Just want to advise a bit of caution before smothering with metanium. It irritated the skin of both my babies who are not otherwise sensitive, I think it's quite strong stuff whatever it is.. maybe patch test first. Hope he's well soon OP x

Allthenumbers · 13/11/2020 20:02

Metanium is great but use a thiN layer and use a barrier cream on top. I highly recommend aveeno barrier cream. Trust me. My daughter had chronic toddler diarrhea and it used to sort h
