WHICH CLOTH NAPPY FOR A NEWBORN?? AND WHERE TO BUY.....?

I started my last monster off in cloth at 5 months - I have a new monster due next year who will be cloth from birth - the question is which nappy????

I'd like to know what types of nappy and wrap people found worked well for a newborn. I'm expecting this one to be about 7lbs when first born (Ha! so that means I'm in for a 11lb er )

I'm planning on buying second hand so any suggestions on where to buy some would be a big help too.

Happy nappying

bambineo - now bambinex worked well for me on a newborn with a motherease airflow as did fuzzi bunz and happy heinys. As for gettign them 2nd hand flame has a 2nd handy bit on her website (can be viewed inthe small business ads bit of the classifieds).

I used flat terries and folded them with motherease rikki wraps. I then went on to use XS Sandys which were very reliable after about 6 weeks ish.

that should say Jo-folded them

flat terries are pretty high up on my list tbh - makes me look like a competent mummy at the weigh-in clinic (when, in fact, I know otherwise )

keep the suggestions coming folks!

I loved the XS or newborn Sandy's, swaddlebees organic velour sized (rather than the one size), tots bots rainbow bots (if you can get hold of any) all with a Motherease airflow or Sugar Peas wool wrap

FlameBat · 16/10/2007 22:01

I loved rainbow tots Mine is one of the really old ones in a more blue blue rather than pastel, and it is bald in places Still love it and use it lots!

The newborn swaddlebees are goooooooooooooooorgeous. If I were to do it again NOW I would do a mix of folded terries and bimbles. With a rikki wrap, or a bambinex one because the bindings are much softer. Airflows were too gapey round the legs on mine, he needed the extra yanking in ness of velcro.

coby · 16/10/2007 22:10

I've used size 2 rainbow bots but found them no way near absorbant enough....however....I suppose it's a different game with a newborn (i'm guessing here) since you get dirty nappies more frequently so don't need the huge amount of absorbancy as they aren't on for so long.

am I making any sense here???? If not it's all down to the pregnancy hormones - honest

The sandy's and swaddlebees sound good, but since I'm on a budget (had a severe dose of nappy addiction earlier this year and now repenting) I think I'll have to give them a miss ...unless you know anyone selling them really cheap

coby i found bimbles and a rikki wrap perfect for my ds and he was in cloth as soon as we got home from the hospital. swaddlebees are nice but too expensive to be a day to day nappy. and tbh even if they were cheaper i think i´d´go for the bimbles. i´m keeping hold of mine for next baby but i have a few other size 1 nappies for sale on flame´s classified board if you want to try a few different ones incl a couple of cheap bambinex.

oh i think a lot of people like kissaluvs too but never tried them..hth

lubyluby · 17/10/2007 07:37

fuzzi bunz are a good pocket for newborn as they are sized so you can get themt o fit quite well.

i alos like bamboozles, tots bots and bambineos. with a tots bots or motherease rikki wraps.

what do you use for your elder child? maybe some of that is suitable for a newborn rather than haivng to buy lots of new cloth?

or try one of the sites that are run by mums who actually use cloth nappies for their own child. i love www.nappyzone.co.uk and www.bumfluffnappies.com as they are so helpful and genuine and both have talked me out of an impulse purchse that i wanted becasue it looked pretty but wouldn't have worked for my dd.

coby · 17/10/2007 11:29

MM -I'm leaning towards bimbles at the moment - how many did you need for a newborn? I'm thinking nippas might be the way to go for the best fit.

Luby - I use Ellas house day nappies for my oldest (got there the long route via trying pretty much everything else) and I have sold my size ones to fund size 2s

Keep an eye on your local freecycle group - you may not even have to part with any money! And check if your local council has a real nappy scheme where you can get some samples to try.

FlameBat · 17/10/2007 12:22

18-24 is normally the recommended for newborns, allowing you to wash every 2-3 days

nappyzone · 17/10/2007 12:41

ooo yeah! if i was going for it again (which i never will)i think i would go for half bimbles and nature babies wraps (i found the whole air filled bum thing with motherease a put off)but riki would solve that and half lovely white newborn fuzzis.

coby · 17/10/2007 15:08

I'm suprised so many of you are recommending fuzzis, thought they would leak with all that runny poo .

Going to need some pretty cheap to get 18-24, will probably have to make up the numbers with terry squares

Bluechampagne - Been looking for nappies on freecycle for ages and not seen any in a year - that said, average age around these parts is 75 so maybe that explains it . I had completely forgotten about my local nappy project - thanks for the suggestion - I was on their waiting list last time round but got impatient and bought myself 20 fluffles before I got to the top of the list

nippa bimbles + rikkis or airflows

but they only lasted dd till 6wks so try really hard to buy secondhand
I only had 10 so washed every day, but we still had one or two close shaves where I had to use one warm out the dryer

actually, do you want mine?

preggersagain · 17/10/2007 15:12

oooooh newborn fluff- nothing cuter i'm going with 24 swaddlebees and 12 fuzzis for my twins- reccomended by flame so i will be blaming her if it all goes wrong (only joking flame!) I've just got some bummis wraps for £2.50 each new so am well and truely chuffed with them!

Ceolas · 17/10/2007 15:16

We found bimbles great too. DD is now nearly 7 weeks and we're going into the size 1s. The little newborn ones were a lovely fit though.

coby · 17/10/2007 15:23

Well thats the other thing isn't it??? Do I start with size one or size 0 bimbles???? I should think little nugget will be about 7lbs when born. Don't see many size o for sale hmmmmmmmmm [hmmm]

MrsBadger - what size are your bimbles??

OP posts:
claireybee · 17/10/2007 15:28

I have 10 Kissaluv size 0's and 6 ME Sandys xs-have also asked my sister to get me 5 each of bimbles in size 0 and 1-think that should be plenty for us as already have dd in cloth so will be washing every other day or so and have a few terry squares for backup too. Now i just need to think about wraps...

MrsBadger · 17/10/2007 15:28

oh size 0
that is what bimbles are for - once they get to size 1 they don't really have a significant advantage over totsbots etc

MrsBadger · 17/10/2007 15:29

(dd was 8lb3)

coby · 17/10/2007 15:32

mrsbadger - so what weight was your dd when she outgrew them then...roughly

OP posts:
coby · 17/10/2007 15:33

....I tried bumbles and found them to be a better fit than tots bots but then DD2 is a skinny monster

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 17/10/2007 15:36

[rummages for red book]
10lb9 or so
fat tummy though
