7 month old only poos if I assist her?

Ever since she started solids at 6 months (it's all very healthy stuff, lots of breastmilk too) she barley ever poos, every so many days she will do a smallll one. I will always check to see if shes ready to have a proper one, its normally every week or two and I'll have to assist her by doing the bycicle movement, wiping her with a baby wipe to stimulate her to push and pushing her legs to her chest. If the nappies on she wouldnt even try to push it out without assistance? Is anyone else's baby like this

Have you spoken to your GP/HV? If baby doesn't have any urge to push a poo out that sounds concerning.

How long have you been doing this? It definitely doesnt sound healthy. Does she eventually get uncomfortable if you do nothing? Sounds like you ought to visit the GP and get something to help her constipation

Scweltish · 14/10/2020 18:37

Do you not realise how bizarre this is op? If your 7 month old baby cannot defecate without you ‘stimulating her’ or pushing her legs to her chest, then I’d seek urgent medical help!

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 14/10/2020 18:39

Please seek help from your gp.

I guess it started from her getting constipated and I instantly notice her pushing and I'd help her out, I thought maybe shed just got accustomed to it

I agree, I think you need to see GP urgently. DS bowel habits definitely changed when he started solids but he's still a regular once a day boy. When you say her diet is healthy, what do you mean? Often what we think of as healthy foods aren't always the best for babies.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 14/10/2020 18:45

Worth asking your gp for advice. Did she used to poo normally before solids? With something like hirschprungs they can't usually poo by themselves at all without assistance but sounds like it's only since they were more firm? Deffo seek advice x

Cliffdonville · 14/10/2020 18:45

I would take her to the GP as soon as you can get an appointment. She definitely shouldn't need assistance.

alesha123445 · 14/10/2020 18:48

I mean I really do feed her healthy, breakfast she has baby porridge, diner she has a healthy homemade meal with veggies, lentils or something like that. Then her end of the day meal is a fruit puree, I've never fed her any junk 😔 she used to be poo fine before solids, shed be going all the time

I'll have a word with the gp about it tommorow

You check to see if your baby is ready to do a proper poo? How would you even know? What happens if you just leave her?

pinksparkleunicorns · 14/10/2020 18:54

I'm quite surprised by the replies on here.

Weaning is a big change for their bodies.

I was told when they are that young it's normal to go a week without any pooing. Two weeks would be a concern.

I'm no medic though, so worth going to the health visitor or gp to check.

I wouldn't freak out though, I know lots of mums who had the same issue with little ones of a similar age.

You're not doing anything wrong mama, don't fret.

MB90 · 14/10/2020 18:55

Oh OP, you really should have already sought medical advice about this already. I don’t understand why you’re obsessing about having only ever fed your baby healthy food - the issue could be a mechanical problem in your baby’s bowel. Hopefully it isn’t, but this could potentially be really serious

alesha123445 · 14/10/2020 18:55

Idk I know this is detailed but her bum is open and she just seems ready? If I left her itll probably just be quarter the amount, with help it's a long proper one?

My DS was like this, he never pooped in a nappy. He was every few days at most and a bit more on the constipated side (still is). I actually started sitting him on the toilet when I knew he needed and from just over 1 he would go in the toilet rather than his nappy (obviously he wasn't toilet trained then for urine!). He is 3 now and no bowel issues.
My littlest is around the same age as yours and would also be a little constipated, he is bottle fed breastmilk so I know he takes plenty and he takes water with every meal too. I give him around 10ml of prune juice with his breakfast which gets him used to drinking from an open cup and keeps him regular. I know people are really anti juice for babies but I'd rather give him a wee sippy of prune juice than have him on regular movicol at this stage.

nicknamehelp · 14/10/2020 19:01

Does she have enough fluids?

Swishswish26 · 14/10/2020 19:04

Be careful with lentils, whilst I know they are good for babies, I’m sure too many leaves them constipated. I would definitely seek the advice of a Dr to be on the safe side.

pinkgreenblue · 14/10/2020 19:15

Does she have any signs of low muscle tone? Can she sit unassisted, can she push up on her arms during tummy time and does she bear weight through her legs if you try to 'stand' her up (obviously not letting go but does she put her feet to the floor and take some of the weight through them)? What you're describing can be a sign of low muscle tone which my DD has, but it's probably only a possibility if she has other signs like I've described above.

Agree with pp that you should speak to the GP regardless though, as she could have a bowel problem or something that you might not pick up.

Pixxie7 · 14/10/2020 19:37

If the problem only started once you started solids it’s probably not a problem. However you are potential setting her up for life long problems, you sound a bit obsessive. Let nature take its course particularly if she isn’t in discomfort.

Fruitteatime · 14/10/2020 19:45

Google elimination communication this is way more normal than pp are making it out to be. Always held my dd and ds for poos in a squat position, it's definitely a natural way of babies pooing. We have just forgotten all the old ways.

Buzlightyear1 · 14/10/2020 20:23

My little one is now 3.5 he went through a awful time when he was 6 months old. I was doing all the leg movements like you. My doctor was the one who told me to do this. He said it can be very normal for babies. There body is adjusting to taking solids so will of course take times. I used to get sweet potato that always helped my little one go. But I would speak to the dr for some advice but I would not be to worried I think it’s normal from what I’ve been told.
