Nine year old wet his pants today

My super intelligent nine year old wet his pants today after school in the car on the way home. He is very embarassed and I've tried to brush it off but I have had to clean the back seat of the car, and his booster seat cover, his school clothes and insist on a bath. He said he forgot to go to the loo this morning when he got up, and because it was cold got straight into his school clothes, then he forgot to go at school then they had two hours sport this afternoon. I despair, he is so clever and sensible but sometimes seems to inhabit another planet, does anyone else have a child like this? He isn't particularly anxious at the moment, although he is highly strung, he just forgot. He has no SEN that we know about.

Unless it becomes a regular thing, I would just chalk it up as one of those things. He may seem grown up at 9, but is still very much a child.

Bagelsandbrie · 12/10/2020 17:43

It’s hardly a big deal is it? These things happen to children every once in a while. He’s still quite young really!

My son has autism and complex needs, he’s 8 so completely different situation of course. But I just can’t be worried about these kinds of things. Just remind him to make sure he goes tomorrow and don’t make a big deal out of it.

MrsWooster · 12/10/2020 17:44

It happens. Unless it happens again and again, it’s probably just too busy /inattention situation.

As a one-off I really wouldn't worry about this too much.

No harm in discreetly mentioning it to the school though if you are worried. They might be able to remind him to go towards the end of the day (or be particularly gentle when it comes to toilet requests during lessons).

CountFosco · 12/10/2020 17:53

If he didn't go to the loo at all today it's probably that but if he does it again he might have an infection in his bladder. Don't be hard on him the poor thing will be feeling mortified.

tldr · 12/10/2020 17:54

I’d be more worried that he hadn’t been all day tbh!

Itisbetter · 12/10/2020 17:56

I’m not sure what you are poking for??? Kid forgets to go to the loo and pees himself...hardly that unusual surely??? Confused. Clean up and remind him to go more regularly.

happytoday73 · 12/10/2020 17:58

Some children seem to get so engrossed in what they are doing they forget to go...

My nephew is like this.. Probably happens twice a year at most to him now ks2... No issues.. Just one of those things

WeAllHaveWings · 12/10/2020 17:59

Well he'll learn to go in future. If its a one off no big deal.

Why didn't he say to you in the car it was urgent?

JuliaJohnston · 12/10/2020 18:02

Why is his super intellect relevant?

MJMG2015 · 12/10/2020 18:03

I'm 51.

It was a close run thing the other day! Just busy/tired/distracted & only just made it to the bathroom!

I'm a little surprised you didn't get an 'iNEEEEED A WEEEEEE NOWWWWWW'
but unless it happens again I wouldn't give it another thought.

Well, I would make sure he's had a drink & a wee before leaving home in the morning but that's because it's not healthy fit him not to have.

Coldwinterahead1 · 12/10/2020 18:05

My eight year old did it a few months ago. Couldn’t hold it any longer. It has been a one off though. I honestly wouldn’t make a big deal out of it x

CaraDuneRedux · 12/10/2020 18:05

Probably a minor UTI or other illness - back at that age for my DS, bed wetting was a sure fire sign he was sickening for something. I wouldn't worry if it's a one-off.

formerbabe · 12/10/2020 18:07

My ds used to be bursting for the loo on the way home from school. He was always too distracted at break and lunch time to go. I used to constantly remind him to go at lunch even if he didn't think he had to. I wouldn't make it into a big deal, just remind him to go at break and lunch.

ShatnersBaboon · 12/10/2020 18:09

It was an accident, not a dirty protest staged on the rear seat of the Qashqai. There's no need for an inquiry.

Sarahandco · 12/10/2020 18:14

Best not to make it too big a deal with him as it could lead to a cycle - if he fears it happening again.

Sometimes kids don't go all day at school and this can be the result. make sure there is nothing preventing him go during the school day.

S111n20 · 12/10/2020 18:21

Just an accident I suppose unless it happens all the time bless him.

TheWashingMachine · 12/10/2020 18:30

I haven't made a big thing of it but I do wonder how someone so intelligent can be such a space cadet. I just can't understand how you can forget to go for a whole day.

Op, keep a gentle eye on him. My ds at 9 and 10 would very occasionally wet himself and it was always two days before he came down with a cold.

At least it was always very short-lived. I hope he's ok.

devildeepbluesea · 12/10/2020 18:39

I'd be worried that he didn't go all day, but not too worried about the actual accident, because it might indicate how little he drinks.

DD is 7 and often gets mild UTIs because she drinks so little at school. Hallelujah we've made some progress in the water drinking in the past few weeks.

Usually the most intelligent of people lack the most common sense.

You sound a bit mean. Lots of people forget things. He's only nine.

Don't tell the school, why would you do that??

You're supposed to be on his side.

...maybe it's because he's nine?
formerbabe · 12/10/2020 21:05

Oh they can totally forget especially when they're busy playing at break time and don't want to miss anything.
