15 month old not walking

Hi all. My 15 month old daughter is still not walking. She can walk, she can take steps and she can pull herself up on furniture. Last week she even stood up off the ground out of nowhere without using anything to pull herself up. However she just keeps crawling! She will take steps between myself and my husband and walks between furniture, but no more than 5 or 6 steps really. She seems quite wobbly and nervous.

Is there anything I can do to help her start properly walking? People keep saying 'don't worry, she'll get there' and while I rationally know that, I can't help but worrying. She is the only baby of her age that I know (friends with similar aged babies, NCT etc) that is not confidently walking everywhere. It would make trips to the park etc much more enjoyable as the wetter it gets outside the less I'm inclined to take her as she just crawls.

Thanks in advance Smile

My DD is coming up for 15 months and is the same. I just don't think she is that bothered at home but when I take her to the park and she sees other kids walking shes much more keen too. Sounds like there is nothing to worry about at all and she's just doing everything in order, once they can stand on their own comfortably logical a step will follow Smile

My DD was 16mo when she walked. She is very cautious and doesn't do anything until she is sure she can. She's still the same at 4.

Both mine were late walkers but so was I. Both were very efficient crawlers so don't think they were motivated! One started at just 14 months and the other at nearly 15 months. Both got going on easy soft surfaces in the end, think the confidence of a soft landing helped.

My Ds didn't walk until he was 17 m and was also the last of the NCT group etc. Now he just runs everywhere. We just put toys out around the room and encouraged him to go and get them. Enjoy the peace whilst you can because once they're off, they want to walk ( or run) everywhere!

Also I live in Scotland so if I was bothered about DD crawling in the rain we'd never go anywhere esp with Covid restrictions. I've just got a good puddle suit for her and some rubber sock shoes and away she goes crawling rain or no rain

My DD2 was like this. At 16 months she just changed her mind and started walking. She will be fine honest. x

My son didn't walk until he was 20 months! Nothing more than lazyitis 😁

He a sporty bugger now though so I wouldn't worry yet.

TheUpholder · 28/09/2020 12:36

My DD didn’t walk until 16-17 months. One day she just did it, and then the next day she started running. She rarely fell. I think she was cautious and didn’t do it until she was confident she could. She will get there OP. It seems like a massive worry now l, but mine is 3 now and I genuinely cannot remember exactly when she started.

Bernardstolemywatch · 28/09/2020 12:37

Don’t worry. Dd was 16months when she ‘properly’ walked. She was a confident walker from the start. I think being a bit later helped.

mrshadders · 28/09/2020 12:44

Thank you all. It's nice to hear that she's not alone in this as it seems all toddlers I know are walking already!

DD didn't walk unaided until 16 months. We were all late walkers in our family so I wasn't concerned.

Please don't worry.

NickMarlow · 28/09/2020 12:54

Dd2 started walking independently at 17 months. Want at all worried about her, dd1 didn't walk until the week after her 2nd birthday!

SpacePug · 28/09/2020 13:26

My DS first walked on his own at 17mo. He's 21 months now and runs everywhere . A friend's son born at the same time walked at 9mo, so I thought mine was behind but he got there eventually

DappledThings · 28/09/2020 13:44

Mine walked at 16 and 21 months. My mum didn't till she was 2. No problems, just taking their time.

SqidgeBum · 28/09/2020 13:52

My DD only started walking while holding my hand at 19 months. Now she is 22 months and is running up and down the hall as I type. There was no other reason other than she just wasnt bothered when she could get somewhere by crawling. I was worried about her, but honestly, bar constantly standing them up and badgering them, all you can do is wait for things to happen themselves. Every kid is different. Sometimes its hard to accept when our little ones are taking their time.

Begonias · 28/09/2020 13:53

My youngest didn't start to walk until she was 22 months old. Well that's when we saw her walking across the living room from the window as soon as she saw us she fell on the floor and started crawling. She was walking very confidently, turns out she'd been walking at the childminders when she thought no one was watching for a while before she did it at home!

Oddonetoday · 28/09/2020 13:56

My lazy daughter didn’t even start crawling till she was a little over a year old and walking 18 months! My nephew who was born when she was 6 months walked at 9 months -he was walking a few months before she could be bothered!
But potty training was a breeze and dry long before most other children and her speech was fine. It’s swings and roundabouts- I think the fact that he’s trying means it won’t be much longer.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/09/2020 13:58

I'm a childminder and this is pretty normal. I have never had a minded baby that walked before a year. Infact I recently had one that didn't start walking even a little bit until 18 months.

Wishingforanotherlife · 28/09/2020 14:00

My DS didn't walk until 19 months. He didn't crawl either but bumshuffled his way around. They all get around to it in their own time, not 'what it says in the book' time. :)

SummerInSun · 28/09/2020 14:12

Another voice for don't worry, she will be fine. But to answer your question about whether there is anything you can do, the answer is yes, there is such a thing as "baby physio". My boys were both premature and both had sessions of it at our local hospital, who gave us sheets of exercise to do with them. Not sure whether it made a difference or not, but older DS stated to walk at 18 months and younger DS at 19 months. The physio said they would rather intervene early, even though it might not be necessary, than wait until there is definitely a problem.

If it's bothering you, you could try asking your GP for either a referral to the paediatric physio therapy team or some information about exercise you can do at home with her. If she was premature, or had a difficult birth with some birth trauma, etc, this may help to get a referral.

Both of mine didn't;t walk until 18 months - one was definitely a talker rather than a walker, and developed excellent language skills to ensure his needs were met - he didn't crawl either, just sat there telling us what he wanted ;-) He's sitting opposite me at the mo doing his A level work, and at 16, and walks really well now, one foot in front of the other every time ;-)

wintertime6 · 28/09/2020 14:19

I was always amazed with babies who were walking before they even turned 1. I have 2 children and one started walking at 17 months and the other at 15 months.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 28/09/2020 14:25

My dd is 3.5 now, she didn't walk till she was almost 15 months. It came out of nowhere. And now she is so agile, fast and steady, I wouldn't worry.

Marzipan12 · 28/09/2020 14:29

Try not to worry. My son didn't walk untill he was 18 months then he walked, ran, bounced and started doing funny little dances all in the space of 2 weeks. He is now a very sporty teen. My other child walked at 13 months, they are all different.

ChickensMightFly · 28/09/2020 17:58

Just think what fantastic strong arm muscles she'll have! If she does fall over when she gets round to walking she'll take the fall on her arms no bother. Crawling is great for core strength too. Grin
