Following on from another thread, I thought I would start this!

DS is 2years 2 months and seems 'ready' so we are going to give it a go. Starting on friday or saturday as we have a friend coming to stay on Tuesday.

Who else is joining me?

I'm here! Just to recap - DS is 2.5 years and quite possibly NOT ready but plan to go 'cold turkey' for a few days starting Monday.

Thinking about a star chart as DS has responded well to this for teeth brushing. Any thoughts on this?

popsycal · 18/10/2004 12:00

we are going to do chocolate button bribery i think eeek

Not joining the group, but wanted to say good luck to all who are about to undertake potty training.

I've been training ds1 (2 years 9 months) for just over a week, and apart from a disasterous start the first weekend (where we missed the potty every time) , it's been remarkably painless.....Even managed two playgroups last week (very nervous!)....

Can I join? We started about 6 weeks ago and it was great. He even went one whole day without an accident and got up first one morning and did a poo on the potty without telling us! Then....it all went downhill and now he won't use it although over the weekend he has started again first and last thing.
He is the oldest of the group so far (2y9m) which doesn't make me feel any better but there you go!

throckenholt · 18/10/2004 13:03

just want to wish you all luck .

Finally succeeded with DS1 in the summer when he was just about 3 - not much luck before that.

motherpeculiar · 19/10/2004 12:27

would love to but not sure how feasible it is - dd is 2yr and 4mths but NEVER wants to sit on her potty. She has sat on it once or twice and I must admit it looks a bit tight and uncomfortable. Maybe it's the potty?

anyone else found this - any tips? would love to join you but maybe I should accept that she isn't ready...

polly28 · 19/10/2004 12:52

would love tojoin popsycal but ds 2yr1m won't sit on the potty for love nor money.
He says no to everything except chocolate buttons or flapjack so maybe bribery would do.Don't hink he would understand a star chart yet.
We're of to Canada on thursday to stay with family so am actually quite relieved I haven't trained him yet.

Good luck and have fun

pinkmama · 19/10/2004 13:55

Motherpeculiar, my dd would never use the potty. One day tried her on toilet and she thought it was great. Wouldn't wear nappy anymore and did really well. Have to say that ds is much older than she was, 2yr 8mth and not the slightest bit of interest in potty or toilet. Good luck!

popsycal · 19/10/2004 14:01

motherpeculair - we had the comfy potty problem as ds is a big lad.
will post links to what we eneded up buying in a few minutes

We're going through this with dd aged 2.3 at the moment. Prompted by the childminder who said dd was always asking to go to the toilet with the slightly older children, and who was really keen to seize the moment .... we started doing no nappies on a regular basis a couple of weeks ago.

It's a bit adhoc as we're out and about so much we're still putting her in nappies or now pull-ups a lot.

But ... she is very good at weeing in the potty ... unfortunately also very good at pooing in her knickers!

So mixed fortunes, but she seems to be enjoying it so far.

Am thinking of buying one of those padded loo seat inserts from Mothercare, so very interested to see what you got popyscal (I seem to be following you around, from due march, to blood pressure to here!)

popsycal · 19/10/2004 14:12

hmmmm
cant seem to find the ones i got!

anyway - the potty was from boots - boots own make £4.00 kind of see-through blue - but wider than usual

got padded toilet seat from boots with little fish on it - blue clour - fish and red and yellow
boots.com doesnt seem to have them
grrrr

We let DS choose a potty at the weekend - a red car from john lewis.

Do we need to get a child size loo seat and if so any recommendations?

Maudy · 19/10/2004 14:57

I have also been thinking of starting. DS2 is 2yrs 4mnths and I was wondering he was maybe a bit too young. I'm sure I didn't start till later with DS1 but my memory is so warped these days so who knows!

DS2 has done a poo on the potty and that was a total fluke but he has never done a wee. He sits on the potty all the time but nothing ever really happens. He is also at full time nursery so I think I need to discuss with them if he is really ready.

Good luck everyone!!

fisil · 19/10/2004 15:06

DS is very young (21 months) so we are only playing really. He sits on the potty every night before his bath and at nursery after lunch and has produced a couple of poos and wees. He says "wee wee " and "poo" just before or after producing, but without enough time to catch it. So I think we will continue to just take it easy for now.

Word of warning, though. He has discovered that on a weekend morning if comes to me in bed and says "book Mummy" or anything similar he gets a grunt and "Mummy sleep." However, if he says "poo, potty" I leap out of bed like a person possesed. So, of course, he now does this at 6:30 every w/end morning, only to say "no poo" when we reach the bathroom, with a smug grin of mission accomplished. Mug.

Maudy · 19/10/2004 16:40

They're clever little buggers aren't they!

allatsea · 19/10/2004 16:42

We're up for it too, starting Saturday. Dd is 2.6, last time we tried for 4 days and gave up when dd, given the choice between nappies or pants said that she wanted to wear leaves to look like thistle on Bill & Ben. I suspect that she won't want to stop playing to sit on the loo, but will bribe with buttons if needs be. Brace yourself everyone!!

Pidge · 19/10/2004 16:44

Tee hee fisil. That's a brilliant strategy - well done him!

ChristinaF · 19/10/2004 19:51

Good luck with the potty training but all I'd say is don't get stressed if it doesn't work. I struggled for ages with dd1 who finally clicked and became dry just before her third birthday. I wondered if I was doing something wrong but she just wasn't ready. My second daughter was totally potty trained at 18 months and dry at night at 2. So just to tell you it is so much down to the individual child and don't worry if your child seems slow. They all get there in the end.

motherpeculiar · 20/10/2004 09:44

Thanks Popsycal and Pinkmama - I'll look in boots for a bigger potty and try the padded loo seat too. She is starting to talk about the potty a lot, and can reel off all the names of the children in nursery who use the toilet now so she is definitely thinking about it.

I'm not going to rush it but will give it a try once we get the comfier accessories!

hi strawberry

we had to try cold turkey in the end as dd wa so depent and lazy in nappies

worth having a go cold turkey 1st week is hard as they have loads of accidents but once u get that 1st wee or poo in the potty is slowly makes a progression

let us all know how u all get on
tc

CHRIZ · 20/10/2004 20:18

hi we go dd distracted or occupied on the potty with a book or 2 or a fav tv programme as put her favorite toys on the potty to show they went lol

Tommy · 20/10/2004 21:35

DS1 doesn't like the potty and prefers the toilet (with no child seat - after I bought 2 potties and a child seat) but he is very tall for his age and everything seemed a bit squashed on a potty! He's also quite good at poking his willy in so it doesn't go all over the floor (long may that last!) although he still only goes on the toliet about once a day or less. Today he asked me to take him to the toliet at his friend's house - mostly to check out their soap and taps (seems interested in such things), sat there for a little while and I said "Are you going to do a wee or just talk about it?"
Him: "Mmmmm just talk about it, Mummy" bless
