DS is 2years 2 months and seems 'ready' so we are going to give it a go. Starting on friday or saturday as we have a friend coming to stay on Tuesday.

Who else is joining me?

Hoorah! Bring on Christmas. Dd is so good at so many things we are really surprised that she just isn't interested in this. She knows that she'll get a sticker and a chocolate button is she 'performs', but that doesn't seem to over-ride the fact that she doesn't want to stop what she's doing to do something else. She's 2y8mo, and if it wasn't for nursery school I wouldn't have tried until she mentioned it/she was nearer 3 years old. We've decided to try and go with the 'using the potty/toilet' whilst we're getting everything ready for bathtime and see how that goes, but how do you make a positive thing out of it???

mumbojumbo · 23/10/2004 22:02

I started potty training a couple of weeks ago, and the first day (a Saturday) was a total disaster - not a single wee near the pot, endless washing etc etc. I did feel like quitting at this point.

By Sunday evening, he had one wee in the potty.....progess had been made....If you can grit your teeth and hang in there for the first few days, I think it gets somewhat easier.

Mind you, the accidents are still happening, albeit fewer and further apart. Just got to keep grinning and bearing it, I guess!

Can't bring myself to read this as maybe too depressing. However, my ds aged 37mths did his first poo in a potty today (one prev in toilet and he had no idea what was going on!). Feels like a small step towards safely nappy free. I do hate waiting for his daily poo in pants (at least only one a day normally). Never ever asks to do wee or poo, but if I insist frequently enough I catch most of the wees. This all achieved on chocolate button bribery. Includes extensive periods where he forgot to remind me about chocolate after we'd come downstairs from toilet/ I'd cleaned potty. And he watched an entire Sunday matinee western sat on his potty - can't remember if he actually did a wee, but I smile at the memory. Remember to find things to smile about if it isn't working!

Pidge · 25/10/2004 10:29

Well, childminder is pleased with how dd is doing on the potty front! We seem to attract a lot of accidents on the other hand. Yesterday we had one poo and three wees in trousers. Gulp.

On the positive side dd likes going and sitting on the potty and can usually produce a wee and is very pleased with herself and says "big wee wee" or "teeny wee wee"!

She's not very good at asking to go - but realises as soon as she starts weeing and then says "Want to do a wee wee", by which time she is soaking wet! But she does then often manage to hang on to a little bit of wee which she will deliver into the potty. Bless her.

I guess as long as she's not stressed out by it, we'll carry on and hope for more progress. But we do often take the cowards option and put her in nappies for car journeys etc. Hope we are not confusing her. We're off to Italy for 5 days on Wednesday and I really think we're going to have to have her in nappies again for a lot of the trip.

welshmum · 25/10/2004 11:29

Good luck to everyone who's trying.
It reminded me of going camping with newly 'trained' dd this August. I think she weed in every pair of trousers we'd brought with us by about 5pm on the first day. I had every pair on a little line....just as it started to bucket down with rain. We gave up then and she was in nappies and bizarre tie-dye festival trousers until we went home 2 days later!

strawberry · 25/10/2004 13:27

Started today. DS has done 4 wee's in pants and none on potty. Did manage a poo this morning on the potty but also one in pants later. Feel quite stressed but will persevere this afternoon. He's asleep now so I am off to bed for a snooze too.

strawberry · 26/10/2004 10:58

Where is everyone? Has everyone given up?

Finally yesterday ds did a wee in potty so made it all a bit more worth while. So far today one wee and one poo in potty. But then he forgot and did a wee while we were playing in the garden. Oh well. Keep trying. How is everyone else getting on?

Pidge · 26/10/2004 11:44

Well, we're still going. Though dd is at the childminders this week, even though dp is on his half term hols! The childminder's view is that there will be accidents, maybe lots, but as long as the kid is happy and making progress - keep going. I was a bit concerned about the number of accidents, but dd is thrilled with the whole idea of weeing on the potty, so I guess we just keep at it, till she figures it out.

We're off to Verona for 5 days tomorrow, so I'm off to Mothercare to buy a portable potty!

mumbojumbo · 26/10/2004 16:43

Sunday was a disaster - so many accidents!

Then yesterday, I slipped a disc (trying to stop ds2 crawling off during nappy change) and am in agony. Have dh at home helping out with childcare. DS1 went out this morning with one of his little friends and had a great time and no accidents and he did a wee on the potty totally unaided yesterday evening.

We soldier on!

jacksmumto1 · 28/10/2004 15:14

Just wondered how everyone is doing??

We started with ds1 - 2yrs 8mths on Sunday, we seem to have 2 'accidents' a day with most wee's (and a couple of poo's) on the potty or toilet. We reward with 1 sticker on a star chart and a smartie for a wee or 2 stickers and 2 smarties for a poo. I do find that I have to prompt him to go i.e. when we take night nappy off (which is hardly wet compared to 'normal'), we sit on the loo; before we go out, we sit on the loo.. etc.. I know he knows when he needs to go as when in nappies he will say 'I need a wee' or 'I need a poo' and then do one BUT since being out of nappies, the majority of the time he won't say and he won't tell us if he has had an accident... BUT he isn't asking for a nappy which he did on previous attempts AND he didn't want a nappy for his daytime nap.... so I guess he is happy about trying.

When will it become more automatic for him to ask / go to the loo? Should I keep prompting him to sit on the loo?

Hope everyone else is doing well! Becca

strawberry · 29/10/2004 13:47

Not sure what's happening with ds. Monday disaster, Tues, about 50:50, Wed totally dry all day using potty several times!! Then yesterday and today, sitting on potty but not going. Nappy full after sleeping in nappy. Hmmmmm. Do you think he's holding on until he get's his nappy on?

popsycal · 16/12/2004 11:18

Any fellow 'failures' () from this thread want to join me in xmas potty training?

OP posts:
OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 16/12/2004 11:58

Hi Popsycal - yes we failed too - getting desparate now - as if ds is dry he can start at preschool two mornings a week in January - ATM he is in nappies almost all the time though so not feeling too hopeful

Im thinking about telling him on saturaday that nappies are no more and going cold turkey!!!! He knows what hes doing but i think he is choosing not to iykwim

popsycal · 16/12/2004 12:00

DS now regularly goes on the potty - but is still in nappies full time. He is keen to use the potty and 9 times out of ten will do a wee on it if he sits on - and is very pleased with himself.

Doesnt occur to him to ask for it though. DOn't know how it will go though as when he goes on he does a little trickle then afew mins later does some more, then 5 mins later some more etc.....
dont know about poo either...
hmmmm

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 17/12/2004 19:54

Ummmmm now when we sit him on the potty - he keeps deliberately standing up and weeing on the floor immediately in front!!!!!!!!!

popsycal · 17/12/2004 19:55
