Do baby climbers stop being climbers??

My 11 month old loves to climb. He's relentless. Anything & everything. Is there a stage when this will stop? When he's walking perhaps?

Considering a climbing frame for him but will that encourage him to do it more?

Any advice appreciated. TIA.

Not in my experience. They just get better at it.

My 18 mo used a chair climb to try to break out of the house. She's now a tween and one of the best in her age group at her climbing gym. Grin

Ahh... well at least if he gets better there may be less bruises.

Hardly any!

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/09/2020 20:22

About three concussions on the way though.

JustanotherTuesday · 02/09/2020 20:24

No, they get more confident. My DS progressed to climbing very tall trees when he was older.

Applesandpears23 · 02/09/2020 20:24

Not here no. Still climbing and now I find my just turned 3 year old standing on upstairs window sills or half way up a tree in the park.

AbsenceOfBlinkinLight · 02/09/2020 20:26

IME, no. But you can channel it better - the scarily early walker and climber I know is now an elite gymnast, where it seems that landing on your head then getting up and trying the same move again is an advantage.

RockyRocky · 02/09/2020 20:27

Sadly not. Mine started at 9 months. He learned to climb before walking. He's 2.5 now, and climbs everything. 😕

Newdaynewname1 · 02/09/2020 20:29

No. They get very good at not falling though.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 02/09/2020 20:30

Nope! Good luck and be prepared for various scary moments and the odd dash to A&E

Redcrayons · 02/09/2020 20:33

I haven’t seen my 16 year old on top of the couch for a while. Grin

They just get quicker and more fearless.

TeddyIsaHe · 02/09/2020 20:34

My sister was a climber, she now scales mountains for fun Grin

Keep a good first aid kit in the house, and do a decent infant first aid course. My sister broke both arms, split her head open and dislocated 3 fingers. My parents weren’t slack, but small people fall faster than you can blink!

ShockShock to all PP's replies.
I have a 14month old, he can take a couple of steps but isnt walking independently yet. He is always climbing up onto the couches, window sills, ledges, coffee table etc in the house and is a rocket to climb up the full flight of stairs if the door is left open Sad

minipie · 02/09/2020 20:34

No.

Best to learn the fastest route to your local A&E now...

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/09/2020 20:36

@minipie

No.

Best to learn the fastest route to your local A&E now...

And don't let them do it on Xmas Eve
gonewiththerain · 02/09/2020 20:39

No, you get very good at child proofing the house though.

summerfruitsrainbow · 02/09/2020 20:39

Nope sorry to say. My 2.5yo is like a fucking ape and just has no fear. She's more confident and steady now though so less bruises and bumps!

Elmo230885 · 02/09/2020 20:40

Oh no, I have a 15 month old climber. I was hoping he'd grow out of it!

Hoppinggreen · 02/09/2020 20:40

Mines 15 and will still climb. The most memorable thing she climbed was a cow when she was 3

DowntonCrabby · 02/09/2020 20:42

Not here, both did this, handsprung over the cot at 10/11 months and like a PP says just got better!

Neither have needed a trip to a&e for a climbing accident thank goodness.

I’m infinitely glad I had DD first and watched her take on trees/climbing frames generally age/ability appropriately as I was then reasonably chilled when DS was up the highest of all equipment at about 2!

They’re 16 and 7 now, DD has lost her love of heights and DS wants to be a stuntman Shock

Newdaynewname1 · 02/09/2020 20:42

Top tip: let them experience falls early. If they learn that falling hurts, and do that from a harmless height, it’ll safe you big accidents later.
Both of mine are crazy climbers.

occa · 02/09/2020 20:44

Nope they certainly don't stop. Do not let your guard down.

I turned my back for approximately 4.7 seconds once when mine was about 8 months and barely walking and had to pull him off the top of a ladder going up to the patio roof. Didn't make that mistake again.

But then a few months later he climbed the bookcases and fell off and broke a bone in his foot. Hmm

Twobigbabies · 02/09/2020 20:52

No doesn't stop. Mine (5 and 3) have a climbing frame but tbh this has just made them faster, stronger and even more fearless when climbing every bit of furniture in the house and every tree in the park 😳

sbhydrogen · 02/09/2020 20:55

I was a climber, and here I am (31) and I still climb 🤣
