How the flip do you change a crawling baby's nappy?

DD is so excited to be on the move that every time I try and change her she wiggles away. Changing nappies is taking an age!

SIL recommended pull-up nappies but I don't think they come in a small enough size (3).

Any tips, before she escapes poo-ily again?

How the flip do you change a crawling baby's nappy

Quickly Grin

I used to distract by pretending to eat their feet.

Pinkiii · 02/09/2020 17:24

Give them something to hold and distract them ( i had a clean set of keys that my DD used to love)
And make it a speedy change. Pulls up’s are a life safer when they are start to move.

ItWasntMyFault · 02/09/2020 17:25

Lay her down so her head is in between your knees (but not touching). She needs to be able to turn her head to get up.
If your knees are in the way she won't be able to do it.

Tell them no and hold them down. I'm a childminder, also have my own 2 children and I've never had this problem for long.

ChanklyBore · 02/09/2020 17:29

Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you, slightly bent at the knee but feet on the flat on the floor, no shoes. Lie the child between your legs and cup their shoulders/upper arms with the arch of your feet holding them down to the ground. Gently but firmly of course. Change the nappy quickly. Let them go.

Serenschintte · 02/09/2020 17:30

I agree with @Iminaglasscaseofemotion Also something to play with and distract and be quick. I used to pin both DS down. And then swapped to pull ups quick. The next stage is figuring out how to take off their own nappy. That can be fun.

Roselilly36 · 02/09/2020 17:30

Haha, PP beat me to it, I agree quickly!

Jamhandprints · 02/09/2020 17:31

I started with pull ups at the wriggly stage. They definitely come in a 4. Much easier.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 02/09/2020 17:31

Pampers pull ups do come in a size 3, but honestly I just pin them down with my legs. After a few days they stop trying to get away

Dilbertian · 02/09/2020 17:32

If they managed to turn over before I finished changing then, I just put the nappy on backwards.

Reallybadidea · 02/09/2020 17:34

My Dragon's Den idea is a changing mat with built-in handcuffs and leg-cuffs.

DarkDarkNight · 02/09/2020 17:35

Pampers pull ups (not the training pants as I’m assuming they’re not as absorbent). This meant I had to take everything off the bottom half when changing but was still faster and less back breaking.

HappyPunky · 02/09/2020 17:36

Pull ups come in size 3. They're called nappy pants on the pack at that age. When you take them off you rip the sides.

I used to clean DD and let her go then get the clean one on her and when she was standing I'd change her standing up.

bookmum08 · 02/09/2020 17:37

Would she stand up holding on to the sofa/chair? Mine liked being changed that way.

hopefulhalf · 02/09/2020 17:40

Yes change standing up holding on. Better than the floor anyway.

This is genius. Thank you! (And everyone).

The only thing that’s ever worked for me is putting the tv on Blush

RedCatBlueCat · 02/09/2020 19:30

+1 for head between knees.
Dont bother with pullups til they are standing.

@Reallybadidea I used to fantasize about sheets and babygros with velcro. That could work for a changing mat too?

Reallybadidea · 02/09/2020 21:35

@HappyPunky damn it, they got there first Angry.

plinkplinkfizzer · 02/09/2020 21:48

sit down on sofa and change her on your knee ,the old fashioned way .

Guineapigbridge · 03/09/2020 10:35

Give her the clean nappy or wipes to hold while you clean her up.

Woodentopper · 10/09/2020 16:38

I do all nappy changes over my knee, it saves all the bending on the floor and means I can change anywhere I can sit so it's ideal for changes away from home.

I'm surprised more mums don't do it, years ago before modern changing units and proper nappy changing facilities all mums did nappy changes over their knee.

Babyboomtastic · 11/09/2020 00:09

A mixture of speed, distraction and pinning then down if needed, but also, changing them in a corner where possible - they haven't got anywhere to escape to!

johnd2 · 11/09/2020 09:52

I went for giving him something to hold, swinging the towel on the towel rail above him to look at, and pressing his shoulder down every time he started to roll. It is still difficult occasionally, but he has learnt that is a waste of energy to try. The moment i stand up to wash out the bowl he knows it's escape time though! They can definitely connect things together at this age in their mind. I use the same technique for bed time as he is not a good sleeper naturally good luck!!
