What age to switch from babygrows to separates

I was wondering at what age people switched from babygrows to separates in the daytime? My daughter is nearly 6 months and I find T-shirts, leggings etc a massive faff to get on and off her. She wears stuff with poppers 95% of the time, either babygrows or vests and dungarees with poppers at the crotch. I’m thinking about clothes for 6-9 months and 9-12 months and wondering at what age separates might be more useful - maybe it’s hard to crawl in a onesie, with the fabric pulling from arm to leg? I know lots of people like separates from the very beginning for the look of them, but does anyone have advice from a practical angle?

It’s hard to crawl in a onesie if there are too big but not dungarees etc, those are all good and to be honest even if they are a bit big it’s never bothered my daughter. She wears a mix of seperates, onesies, dungarees, grows, sleep suits and rompers.

It's hard to crawl in dresses too. Unlike little playsuit /dungarees

Majorly this! You have tuck them into little baby pants, so try and avoid the dresses.

We stopped all-in-ones as soon as my son started crawling as the legs could get all lose and he'd just end up stuck in a big leggy tangle.

Having said that, by that point I found separate were easier for nappy changes anyway as he'd keep trying to sit up making it really awkward to do the poppers back up afterwards.

Heyha · 23/08/2020 21:30

We started going to separates when DD started crawling so probably 6-9 months with some onesies still. She started cruising at about 19 months and walking by 12 so she has got the grand total of two onesies now, for when she's poorly and in case she needs something warm on under her sleeping bag. The good thing about her walking us that dresses are ok to wear again, no fun for crawling!

Heyha · 23/08/2020 21:31

9 months not 19 obvs, she's not got a time machine 😂

Oly4 · 23/08/2020 21:32

About six months. We switched to leggings and tops for crawling

CaMePlaitPas · 23/08/2020 21:34

I dressed mine in t-shirts from birth. Never could be arsed with lining the poppers up.

FightMilkTM · 23/08/2020 21:35

We did babygrow (/ vest / bodysuit whatever you call it) and leggings pretty much from birth, along with all in ones etc.
She’s just turned one and wears a T-shirt and leggings or a dress and leggings most days now. She’s a very competent walker though, no point in dresses before walking imo; they need gravity to ‘fall’ properly.

My DC were both born in the spring followed by really hot summers. In the early days, they lived largely in vests. By about six months or so, I dressed them in joggers and tops. I didn't find it too difficult with them, but socks were a nightmare! The damn things kept wriggling off.

Parker231 · 23/08/2020 21:44

DT’s were in babygros until they were about nine months and then into leggings with T-shirt. I don’t think DD wore a dress until she was about three. Leggings were easier for climbing!

blueorangeredyellow · 23/08/2020 21:51

Comfortable separates were always my preference and kept baby grows for bedtime.

Pulling pants off for nappy changes is much easier than loads of poppers and when they are on the move baby grows can get a bit baggy unless they are a snug fit.

Woodentopper · 23/08/2020 21:59

My 3yo is still in nappies so I regularly use popper vests / onesies. Most shops stop selling them at 3yo so I see no problem in using them on an older toddler.

narcdad45 · 23/08/2020 22:09

When they started crawling, I get all twitchy when I see immobile babies in separates, my nephew who's only 8 weeks never in a baby grow and all his tops ride up his back, looks so uncomfortable.

Footlooseandfancy · 23/08/2020 22:32

We had separates from about 4 months or so but also wore rompers and baby gros. By 6 months it was mostly separates during the day depending on what we were up to - I found them much easier than babygros for dressing and nappy changes.

Rubyroost · 23/08/2020 22:47

6 to 9 months for us and I was initially determined I'd stick him in baby gros til he was 1. Will have to be 6 to 9 months the second time around too as recycling clothes from first time round. Though I do like the convenience of just sticking them in a onesie

Xyzzzzz · 23/08/2020 22:50

Dd stopped wearing baby grows at around 9/10 months. She’s always worn separates in addition to baby grows when she was younger

ZooKeeper19 · 23/08/2020 22:54

10mo still in onesies too, love them, no faff with two pieces when one suffices.

NavyKitchen · 23/08/2020 22:55

My ds3 (age 9) has just asked me for "onesie with feet"
I loved mine in babygros and kept them in them for as long as I could get them in their size!

frolicmum · 23/08/2020 22:57

3-6 months. He was a wriggler and his feet got all tangled and I felt like he had outgrown them so quickly and I preferred trouser + Babygrow & jumper.

853ax · 23/08/2020 23:00

Once they started crèche ~6 months. Put them in outfits going in as felt babygro were PJ's.

caringcarer · 23/08/2020 23:05

I kept babygro for bed and put babies in rompers or dresses from 4 weeks. Put a clothes peg on back of dress when crawling on floors.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/08/2020 23:06

I had DD in clothes during the day from day one.
Shoot me now!
There's plenty of lovely soft outfits, leggings and tops, soft dungarees or dresses.
Although this is MN and someone will say I had her trussed up in a lace dress and then wouldn't let her climb a tree.

Caspianberg · 24/08/2020 06:50

My 4 month old is already in 6-9 month clothing. I have bought a mixture of poppers vests, leggings and sleepsuits. I have bought the sleepsuits without feet also as he seems to be very long and always grows out length wise first in anything with feet.

He mainly wears just a poppers short vest atm as it’s hot. And I add leggings first thing or in evening if it cools down

I think I will keep vests with poppers regardless of what he wears them with until out of nappies and being picked up all the time as any just T-shirt’s ride up and look uncomfortable

RowboatsinDisguise · 24/08/2020 06:56

DS was in a mixture from day one. Nothing fancy or complicated mind you: I just found little cotton trousers, a vest, and a cardigan was actually easier than all the poppers on a sleep suit.
