The gro egg is red so it’s quite hot
I can’t work out what to put on the baby she’s wearing a short sleeved short legged all in one bit it’s a bit big so to elbows and knees will this be enough she has a cotton blanket too if needed ?

How old is she?

Bunnybigears · 16/08/2020 22:18

feel the back of her neck with the back of your hand and judge from there.

The doctor said to worry about overheating that a cold baby will cry and an overheated baby will be very unwell but I’m not sure what the right amount of clothing is ?
The back of her neck feels ok to me but I am overthinking it and possibly a bit overwhelmed

How does the room feel to you? Would you be warm enough sleeping in what she has on?

littleBabyagain · 16/08/2020 22:24

Also she is breastfeeding a lot so on me and I feel warm so will that make a difference too I have been covering her with a Muslin cloth while I feed her in case she felt any cold but the egg is still on red

I found Grosnugs (for newborns) & Grobags helpful, they also come with a what to wear guide. Blankets were useless for my wriggly DD & I was always confused as to how many / what thickness they needed. Sleeping bags are fab!

Firstly congratulations on your baby.

Secondly what’s the actual temp reading at? The egg goes red anywhere from 24 I think but there is a big difference between 24 and 28! Egg will be red in both cases. As a tiny newborn I would be tempted for vest and a single layer cellular blanket tucked tightly in. Can you cool the room in anyway? Open window and door to get a breeze in. Check on back of the neck for sweaty/clammy/hot and remove blanket if needed.

littleBabyagain · 16/08/2020 22:26

I don’t feel cold at all and I have a thin strapped nightie on but one midwife said babies need an extra layer but then later the dr said beware of overheating 🤦‍♀️ I’m so confused

25.5

Congratulations on your baby! I'd probably just pop a light baby grow on, and no blanket. Or a vest and a Muslin or thin blanket.

Bunnybigears · 16/08/2020 22:28

Its OK to feel confused there is so much conflicting advice being a parent is mostly trial and error. If you are breastfeeding you will be lifting her regularly so of she does get too hot or cold she won't be left that way for too long. Go with your gut instinct.

littleBabyagain · 16/08/2020 22:28

Thankyou so much I was just feeling overwhelmed that I might do the wrong thing I don’t want her to feel too hot or too cold it’s so difficult

Groegg is red from 24 degrees.
Orange from 20-24.
What is the actual temperature?

If you’re BF you’ll be picking them up frequently to check temp but it sounds ok. If it’s been 24-27 like it has recently I’ve put DC in just a t shirt style bodysuit and then a blanket on legs if they feel cold throughout the night.

User478 · 16/08/2020 22:28

Unplug your egg.
Seriously.

One more layer than you will be fine.

Congratulations on your lovely little one, now get some sleep!

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 16/08/2020 22:29

I had both my girls during extreme heatwaves not unlike how the weather was last week (or was in London at any rate). When it was that hot, even as newborns, I kept them both in just vests and with cellular blankets or large over them and tried to cool the room as best I could with fans. If they’re cold they’ll soon let you know about it.

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 16/08/2020 22:31

I’m forever looking up how to dress baby for bed chart as the temperature is so variable at the moment. I’d just go for a sleep suit just now and if the room gets cooler later on then you can maybe add a blanket.
If you have a fan that can help cool the room down, and a bowl of ice placed in front of it is good DIY air conditioning

littleBabyagain · 16/08/2020 22:32

Thankyou for all the advice, it is just so tricky I had so much info thrown at me in hospital I feel like i am totally overwhelmed and trying to do it all right

Wtf is a gro egg? Use your gut feeling and judgement.

littleBabyagain · 16/08/2020 22:41

It’s a room thermometer

OP had her first baby 2 days ago. She's not reached "gut feeling and instinct" yet, she's still at "adrenaline, panic, euphoria and anxiety".

@littleBabyagain go for a vest and light blanket and check in the night. You're doing great.

Sayitagainwhydontyou · 16/08/2020 22:46

*judgement

ScubaSteven · 16/08/2020 22:52

Congratulations OP! I remember those early days when things seem so overwhelming, but it's great to have places like mumsnet to turn to.

I'd go with what the other posters have said, unless she feels uncomfortably warm I'd put a babygrow in her, possibly a vest underneath but that depends if your house is old or new (or drafty).

As for overheating, I doubt you could overheat her if she was wearing the above. I think they warned you about overheating in reference to using blankets or fleece onsies etc.

I used to swaddle my summer newborn using a large muslin and he'd be dressed in either a baby grow or just a vest.

caringcarer · 16/08/2020 22:59

Light grobags are great for night time. I used to put my babies in cotton nighties and a matinee jacket for first 6 weeks. Many years ago though. In summer if hot just a cotton sheet over them.

Try to relax and enjoy your new baby.

IvanTheDragon · 16/08/2020 22:59

The one extra layer advice is good as a general rule but it breaks down at hotter temperatures, because unless you’re naked it implies they always ought to be wearing two layers! I look at what my daughter is wearing and think “would I feel just a little bit too warm in that?” - if so it’s probably ok.

Congratulations on your baby! Enjoy getting to know her.
