My toddler has weed 15 times today. Is this normal?

Current potty training 2.5 year old. I thought he was doing wees for rewards and that was reason why he was weeing so much. He's weed 15 times since 9.30pm and it's only 6.40pm. He's had a lot of accidents today and I thought we were making progress. 😭 Is this normal? Anyone had similar? We've just moved from pull ups to proper cotton knickers and he's having more accidents, not less! I don't like the o crap method, so please don't recommend this. I'm really wondering about the frequency of his wees.

How much is he drinking? Is he weeing in large quantities or just a dribble? Does he seem to be in any pain etc or have a high temp?

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 18:48

I don't think he has a uti if that's what you're asking. He has a big drink of milk in morning, then he has milk in porridge with pureed mango on top and then he's had a beakerful of water with a tiny bit of squash in to get him drinking more.

He does small wees.. Seems to be every 45 mins. Some days he can last longer, some days not

I think a lot of wees is normal for some children and they learn to condense them as they get used to having to use a potty or toilet.
Can he manoeuver his underwear to use the potty? Is he struggling with his clothes? We had to put a pin in it for this reason.

Haworthia · 29/07/2020 18:52

He’s probably just letting small amounts out at a time, rather than fully emptying his bladder. Probably the novelty value. Can you convince him to try and do a bit more each time he goes?

Mostdefinitelynot · 29/07/2020 18:55

My DS wees rather a lot as well. Obviously depends on how much he's drinking but sometimes, like myself, he seems to have a more wee-y day if you know what I mean.

He'll probably start doing less wees as time goes on once he learns to hold his bladder for longer.

SmileyClare · 29/07/2020 19:03

Overactive bladder is common in toddlers. That said, don't forget he's small so has a small bladder. Around 12 times a day is normal.

Warning signs to look out for when you want to contact a gp would be
Dark, funny colour urine or strong smelling,
Fever,
Weight loss
Extreme thirst
Pain when weeing
Inability to hold urine

Sometimes overactive bladder can be caused by stress, or an event like moving house? Or just the stress of potty training itself. Mine had lots of accidents at first, made progress then went back to accidents. 2 and a half is still young and I found boys slower to take to the potty than girls.

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:07

I expect the wees will tot up to 18 times today when the day is fully over!!

wow this reads so different as an american who doesn't use "wee" haha

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:12

I think he's weeing about 30/40 mls at a time

Mine did that when I tried potty training. Went through all the spare pants in 24hrs.

I gave up and tried again a few months later. Much better.

SmileyClare · 29/07/2020 19:13

Are you just noticing the accidents more because he's in cotton pants rather than pull ups? The pull ups are very absorbent aren't they?

It might be best to go back to pull ups or put potty training on hold for a month and go again? Has he had 15 accidents today or is asking for potty? Is he actually noticing the urge at all?

Spidey66 · 29/07/2020 19:14

I was getting worried about the amount of spliffs your toddler was getting through.

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:17

@SmileyClare no, I've been checking and the pull ups have been dry. He's asked to go for a wee twice today. He's had two days where he was dry til 6.30 and was actually getting better at self initiating. I feel like I need to keep going, rather than put it off. I'm going to give it another couple of weeks at least. He has also managed two poohs in the potty. He does recognise the urge to go. Sometimes I wonder if he's choosing to ignore it?!

My eldest was like this when she first potty trained, it changed gradually over a few weeks. But I would really recommend you stop the squash as it can irritate the bladder and cause accidents. My youngest would have an accident shortly after having squash at parties. Stick to water or milk. Watered down proper fruit juice is better than squash if you really have to, obvs not good for teeth tho.

mrsmonkey14 · 29/07/2020 19:23

Ps. Your post suggests he has only had 1 glass of milk and one beaker of squash all day - I might be misunderstanding but that’s not enough fluids for a whole day.

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:30

He's getting plenty of fluids, his wee is hydrated and he's now had another glass of water. He has a massive drink of milk in his porridge and he has yet to have dinner, he's had milk in his porridge and mango is all fluids. Bi didn't come on here to get a lecture about what to give my kid to drink and I can't put him on a bloody drip fgs!!

If he is not drinking a lot his wee will be stronger which might be irritating his bladder. I second squash, I only figured that one out when at the cinema we had five visits to the loo in two hours after an orange squash. Even now squash sets him off.

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:31

@mrsmonkey you've told me to stop the squash on one hand but he's not drinking enough on the other. We actually introduced the squash to get him to drink more and he has a very small amount just enough to give him a slight taste. But thanks I will look it up, its actually high juice so I think probably less likely to itrutate his bladder

It was only orange with DS, ribena, milk, water, all fine but orange god help me he ran like the manneken pis fountain boy.

MadeForThis · 29/07/2020 19:51

Totally normal. In a nappy they do loads of tiny wee's. They haven't learned to hold it yet.

My dd did 20 + wee's the first day.

Within 2/3 days it was down to a usual amount.

They are usually so delighted with managing to do a wee in the potty/toilet that they want to do another one.

After a few days they learn how to hold it better.

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:53

He only has one cup of squash a day as we wanted to limit intake of sugar, we make it very weak but actually introduced it during those hot days in May/June because we felt he wasn't getting another fluids. He then drinks water for the rest of the day. He's now had a cup of that and will have more with his dinner at 8.30.
I don't really know how to get any more fluids down him, but from the colour of his wee he's not dehydrated and gets fruit and vegetables too

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:54

@MadeForThis we have been at it for two weeks if you count pull up training. 😭

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 19:55

@justasking111 he's worse with milk than anything else

Your toddler shouldn’t be smoking weed full stop.
