My toddler has weed 15 times today. Is this normal?

Current potty training 2.5 year old. I thought he was doing wees for rewards and that was reason why he was weeing so much. He's weed 15 times since 9.30pm and it's only 6.40pm. He's had a lot of accidents today and I thought we were making progress. 😭 Is this normal? Anyone had similar? We've just moved from pull ups to proper cotton knickers and he's having more accidents, not less! I don't like the o crap method, so please don't recommend this. I'm really wondering about the frequency of his wees.

I was potty training twins for a couple of hours last week. They went four times. One squeezed out gallons, the other very little just wanted to copy. Grin

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 20:03

Yeah I know, gonna have to put a stop to that, right? Really didn't notice when I posted Grin

Haha just twigged that people are laughing about the title. I wondered what the spliff jokes were about Grin

Sounds like he's hydrated enough so I wouldn't worry too much about that. His wee would be dark otherwise. Toddlers need about a litre but don't forget about 20% of water comes from food; fruit, veg, cooked grains, even yoghurt is 88% water.

I think at that age there are so many exciting distractions they ignore the urge to wee quite often. As long as he has no symptoms of a uti this all sounds quite normal. Just keep it stress free as possible if he does have an accident. Hopefully he'll improve and start holding it for longer. Your washing line must be full of pants at the moment. Smile

@SmileyClare I'm trying to get more water down him, but it's hard isn't it.. Maybe a fun cup?!

He's gone through 7 pairs today, but luckily only 2 pairs of trousers as they have a bit of padding in them and I caught the accidents before they soaked through

I'm of NO help whatsoever but I did this with my face 😲 as I read your toddler has weed, as in cannabis.....

VivaDixie · 29/07/2020 20:42

@hotsouple

wow this reads so different as an american who doesn't use "wee" haha
Me too!! I had to open this thread as I read the title in horror!! And I am a UK northerner 😂😂
SmileyClare · 29/07/2020 20:44

Yeah a fun cup, bendy straws or other ways like giving him watermelon, ice lollies- you make your own with a bit of diluted fruit juice, milk or even yoghurt. I showed mine how to use the water and ice dispenser on our fridge when they were little to fill up their own cups...not sure if that was a good idea looking back!

itsaratrap · 29/07/2020 20:46

If his wee is a pale straw colour and he’s happy with no temp, I wouldn’t worry.
Hardly weeing at all is a concern.
If you’re worried though, call your HV.

I've just potty trained my 2.5 yo son. He wees loads! Little and often. Easily every 45 mins. And often he will be obviously desperate and holding it and then he goes for a wee and it's only a really small one! I think maybe their bladders are just small.

My son drinks a reasonable amount but not loads and wee is normal colour.

It has definitely been a different experience potty training a boy (I have an older DD!) But we cracked it after a couple of weeks of accidents and poo holding!

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 22:26

Thanks @ up the wolves, that's reassuring. Has it got any better over time?

@upthewolves

Toddler smoking weed... That was one way to get responses for this thread 😂
@SmileyClare no, I've been checking and the pull ups have been dry. He's asked to go for a wee twice today. He's had two days where he was dry til 6.30 and was actually getting better at self initiating. I feel like I need to keep going, rather than put it off. I'm going to give it another couple of weeks at least. He has also managed two poohs in the potty. He does recognise the urge to go. Sometimes I wonder if he's choosing to ignore it?!
I used to toilet train children when I worked in a nursery and it's a lot harder to train boys than girls so it sounds like you're doing really well. Sometimes he may be ignoring the urge or he may be just forgetting because it's still new. They can get so caught up in something else that they just forget "oops, need a wee". It's totally normal. Persevere, you've got this :) Just ask him all the time "do you need a wee?" or just tell him it's time for the potty.
He'll get there :)

Rubyroost · 29/07/2020 22:45

@ZZGirl thanks, i guess I was wondering with him weeing this frequent whether he was ready. Thanks for the encouragement, I need it!!
I think I wanted him to take control and tell me. But I guess he's not ready for that so I'll start taking him more often to the potty. I guess I was worried if I take him too often hell rely on it and never ask. Or that hell never hold his wee and so his bladder won't stretch. Everything I read says something different.

@rubyroost it's only been a few weeks. I don't think the frequency of wees has really changed tbh but he has got way better at holding them. He can now 'need a wee' until we get home for example where before if he said 'i need a wee' we needed to immediately drop everything because it meant we were seconds away from wet pants!

Shelby30 · 30/07/2020 08:45

I'd say that is normal. My little girl drank loads and it was summer when we potty trained she cld go every 15mins or more sometimes. She's 3 now and can go hours without going so they do learn to hold it more with time and practice.

Rubyroost · 01/08/2020 14:37

Thank you all for your comments and support. We have decided to hold off for now. The frequency was just getting too much. He was weeing 18 to 20 times a day, whilst about 12bto 14 were going in the potty it was just too much and he was getting resistant. I'd be pissed off if I was asked to go to the toilet that much. He was weeing about 25mls at a time. So we are holding off. He's in pull ups and if he asks to go that is fine. Otherwise I'm not putting on any pressure and we will see how things go. He's asked to go 3 times today and done more in his pull up. But he's still asking so I'm hoping that will become more frequent as he realises he gets positive attention.

Baby steps it will happen. The other day we went out forgot about loos with 3.5 year old had rides on pier, drinks, ice cream was only when we got to lunch place he suddenly said he needed the loo. 3 hours he had gone without a loo.

mamapearl · 01/08/2020 14:59

Seriously thought your toddler was smoking cannabis

hopsalong · 01/08/2020 15:01

It's not normal for anyone. And many normal toddlers hardly ever have a wee! I'm pretty sure he has a UTI. I'd call the GP on Monday morning if no better.

Rubyroost · 01/08/2020 15:51

@hopsalong and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a uti, he has no other symptoms whatsoever. Butt I am going to contact the HV and ask her about the amount of wees.

copperoliver · 01/08/2020 21:53

Maybe he's got a water infection. X

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/08/2020 22:10
 1. Let your child drink to thirst. Not all children need the same amount of fluid, they get varying amounts from food. If their urine is pale they are fine.
 1. Squash makes mine do loads of smaller wees.always.
 1. What about "oh crap" dont you like? If it's the bare bum stage because there are accidents and no pull up to catch it, its because it works. If you want to train the child with zero mess wait until they are 5 and are "ready" according to the crunchier classes.
NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/08/2020 22:12

Ps loads of children continue to need reminding occasionally until much older - junior school age etc! It does NOT mean they are not ready to be out of nappies.
