If you still had all of your baby things from dc1? Obviously matresses need to be new but I was wondering whether there was anything that you had felt that you needed or was better than you had for dc1?
Did it get used or was it just wanting to buy for a new baby?

I am considering a swing this time but am conscious that I could just want to buy something baby related.

New a myhummy. It’s worth the cost.
Second hand a shuggle bath and a changing table. A spare sling and new baby would only go in a sling.
A toys from the baby to the older child.
Some furniture for the baby.
Some cute clothes and a few more later because they were born in different seasons.

OverTheRainbow88 · 04/07/2020 20:57

Nothing!!!! Still haven’t 17 months later!

Lockdownseperation · 04/07/2020 20:58

Sorry I loved it all, except for the cot mattress because it hasn’t been used and probably won’t be.

Oh different bottles as my second refused times tipped bottles!!

HeeeeyDuggee · 04/07/2020 21:00

Depends how old DC1 is I guess for us we needed a new pram (double) because of a small age gap and we got a new bouncer that would last until toddler years so both can use it.

New clothes because my 3rd DC was a girl and most of my DS2 stuff was still with my sil. New gro friend too because DS2 still cuddles his at bed time.

Drbrowns · 04/07/2020 21:03

A double buggy, new mattress and new bottles.

Napqueen1234 · 04/07/2020 21:08

A new and better quality sling ✅
Some new baby bottles ✅
New dummies ✅
A star blanket ✅ DC1 was summer baby DC2 winter
A few little cardigans and warmer layers
New teething toys ✅
Baby blanket (DC1 still has theirs in their bed) ✅
Sounds a lot but we have passed virtually everything down and only bought what we absolutely need. What I have found is the stuff I have bought I got better quality things which has been nice whereas DC1 had so many bits to get Everything was on a budget and fairly cheap!

OhTheRoses · 04/07/2020 21:11

Pink socks once she was born Grin.

Lockdownseperation · 04/07/2020 21:18

Just remembered I got a second bouncy chair from a free a pass it on
Facebook page. It was handy to keep in the bathroom for showering.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 04/07/2020 21:20

I got new outfits for going home from hospital.
DC1 was winter and DC2 was summer so I ended up buying long sleeved vests/jumpers as needed. DC2 was also MASSIVE compared to DC1 so a few bits.

gonewiththerain · 04/07/2020 21:22

I’ve bought a new Moses basket and a new car seat as I wanted one that would clip on my pushchair frame.

TooMinty · 04/07/2020 21:25

Just a new cot mattress. 23 month age gap so at first I had DS1 in the pram and DS2 in a wrap or carrier. Then got a buggy board for DS1.

Taswama · 04/07/2020 21:28

Cuddly toys as I could hardly confiscate those from DC1.
Some cuter items like booties. Weirdly I was more obsessed with items being practical for dc1 than for dc2.
Sling - hadn't used one much with dc1 but very useful to get out with both or more likely come home when dc2 too tired to walk.
3 years age gap.
I still hand a lot of clothes on but then buy a few more for dc2 as dc1 is still wearing or they've worn out.

Mangomumma · 04/07/2020 21:31

A sling (had carrier first time & sling was so much easier with a newborn)
Few extra vests & cardigans (DD2 was winter born & DD1 summer born)
Buggy board for DD1

HarrietM87 · 05/07/2020 07:54

I’m also hoping to borrow/get v cheap a second bouncer and possibly a second crib to have more places to put DC2 down than I needed with DS1.

I will have to get some long sleeved vests and maybe a star wrap as DS1 was a summer baby and this one will be winter.

And mattress obviously. But that’s it! Even though DC2 is a girl I’m planning on reusing all her big brother’s clothes etc. Expect will get a lot of pink as gifts...

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 08:12

Do we really need a new mattress? Annoying to have to buy a new one!

There will be 6 months between my two so we might need a few new clothes if the size isn't right for the season. Also DC1 is a boy and DC2 is a girl, all the baby clothes I bought were unisex and we got some more "boyish" clothes as gifts - I am sure I will reuse most of them for DD anyway but I am also looking forward to buying a few girly things, not necessarily pink but one or two dresses and floral prints.

Apart from that we have virtually everything we need. We had an ergobaby for DS that we will reuse, also a friend has offered a soft stretchy wrap which I will take her up on as I imagine it will be useful for the early days.

DS will be 3.5 and we barely use the pushchair for him (apart from occasionally, as it's handy for lugging stuff around) so I don't think we need a double. I will probably get a buggy board though, maybe a second hand one in case he doesn't take to it.

I will get a chest of drawers for baby's room but that's the only big thing.

Need to buy a new single bed for DS, so we can use his cot bed (currently in toddler bed mode) as a cot for baby. She'll be in his old Snuzpod to begin with though.

I do feel a bit sorry for DC2 getting all of DC1's hand-me-downs and barely anything new! Also in my first pregnancy I wanted to buy new, not used, but now if we need anything else I will consider used. To be fair that is because I always knew I wanted two, so anything we bought would be likely to be used twice over (whereas anything we buy now will just be used once).

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/07/2020 08:12

I think even reusing a mattress is ok if you know you’ve looked after it! I think they don’t recommend a second hand one incase the people you buy it from are smokers etc! My sisters baby is the 5th baby in our family to be in the sleepy head but we all looked after it and none of us smoke.

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 08:14

"There will be 6 months between my two"

Oops, I meant their birthdays will be 6 months apart, obviously the age gap is bigger than 6 months Blush Grin

3.5 years. Opposite seasons which meant I had to buy some more maternity clothes as I had winter but not summer stuff.

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 08:15

@OverTheRainbow88
Thank you! We have looked after the Snuzpod mattress and cot bed mattress. We've used waterproof mattress protectors. They are still in very good condition.

HarrietM87 · 05/07/2020 08:23

@NameChange30 sorry but the pp is completely wrong re new mattresses. It’s nothing to do with smokers. There is some research to suggest that the SIDs risk is higher with a second hand mattress, especially if it’s come from outside the home. It’s not understood why, but potentially due to mould spores from when the baby was sick/dribbled on to it etc (which they all do). If you can buy a new one then you should.

This link is also helpful:

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 08:30

"potentially due to mould spores from when the baby was sick/dribbled on to it etc"

But if you use a waterproof mattress protector, those things don't get on the mattress.

Thanks for the link, I've read it and it seems the risk is greater with a used mattress from someone else (as opposing to reusing one you already have)

"To help reduce this risk, if you are using a second-hand mattress make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition."

All fine in our case.

IlanaWexler · 05/07/2020 08:32

I'm about to have a 19 month gap. This is my list for DC2:

Double buggy
Mattress
Hair bands / bows (so she can wear DS's boy clothes and still look like a girl - yes I know this is ridiculous and unnecessary but there we are haha)
Car seat
Nappies (small sizes)
Dummies
Bottle teats
Cot mobile (DS's one broke)

I've already bought a single mattress and new bedding for DS, so that his sister can have his cot and sleeping bags.

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/07/2020 08:33

I can see why ideally a new one is bought, however, like OP said if you’ve really looked after it, used a protector on it and know it’s well looked after I don’t see the problem. Not every one can simply afford to buy a new one.

HarrietM87 · 05/07/2020 08:35

The advice I linked to says that you can minimise the risk and it recognises not everyone can afford a new one. It also says though that they recommend a new one is bought for every child. I’m getting a new one for my second child and it’s about £50. Since I’m barely buying anything else for this baby I think something that reduces the risk of SIDs is probably money well spent, but everyone makes their own choices.
