Whay did you buy new for dc2?

If you still had all of your baby things from dc1? Obviously matresses need to be new but I was wondering whether there was anything that you had felt that you needed or was better than you had for dc1?
Did it get used or was it just wanting to buy for a new baby?

I am considering a swing this time but am conscious that I could just want to buy something baby related.

Indeed they do.
DH insisted on buying organic mattresses so we spent a lot more than £50 first time around, I'm not spending that money again when the ones we have are in perfectly good condition. DH won't want to replace the organic mattresses with cheaper ones.
Each to their own though.

For our second the list is...

  • A new Tripp Trapp as my first son still uses his everyday - we still have the baby bit/ high chair attachments from my first so will reuse those piece
  • A buggy board
  • jellycat soother thing (first child wants to pick one for baby)
  • New portable changing mat as existing one was destroyed & binned
  • Got family posting us some new Bonds Wondersuits from Aus for first few months as our first lived in them
  • contemplating a sleepyhead. Sold my sons after he grew out of it as knew we wouldn’t reuse for a second baby cause of sids risk etc

I am considering another Tripp Trapp. We got one as a gift and it's been great. DS still uses it but is also happy on a regular dining chair so it is tempting to just "promote" him to an adult chair and use the Tripp Trapp for baby. We have a while to decide though as baby obviously won't need a high chair for a while Grin

There's 2years 3months between DC1 & DC2. We used the same cotbed & crib mattresses (stored in waterproof covers & relevant sheets under DC1s single bed. All washed & aired before use.) We reused the pram/pushchair & car seat (stored in understairs cupboard) with everything removed & washed before use. I tried to buy unisex things before having DC1 as I knew that we were intending to have a 2.6 age gap & wanted to try to save some money. Everything DD outgrew went in vacuum bags in the loft. (DC2 is DS so didn't wear DDs old dresses)
What surprised me most is my complete refusal to put DS in a pink sleeping bag! I just couldn't do it! Fortunately most of them were neutral or blue anyway.

Surprised someone is so concerned about the risk of SIDS reusing a sleepyhead yet the sell it?!!

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 09:00

Fine for someone else to incur the risk Grin

60sPony · 05/07/2020 09:05

@OverTheRainbow88 & @NameChange30 you can tell even from this thread people haven’t different threshold for risks so why bin it if someone else is happy to use it? Also part of the risk is it being in storage for a long period and if it’s sold straight after use and used straight away again risk is lower...
There is nothing mean or nasty about it.. someone who isn’t comfortable with it wouldn’t buy it

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 09:07

"Also part of the risk is it being in storage for a long period and if it’s sold straight after use and used straight away again risk is lower..."

Interesting, I didn't know that. I suppose it makes sense as things can go mouldy when stored and not aired.

Mattress
Buggy board
Bottles
Dummy
Older sibling bought new Teddy for new baby so they didn't have to share...

You are all bad influences. I am now adding to my list of things that we need.

We will buy a new matress for the crib as it has had lots of stuff stored on top of it. Ds is nearly 4 and has just moved out of the toddler bed so I think that the matress for the cotbed probably needs replacing.
Just realised that we will need a new change mat.
I have bought a few newborn sleepsuits. I didn't bother last time but 0-3 drowned ds for the first few weeks.

Just had DC2 and we got a new cot mattress and a travel crib for downstairs naps (and for the holiday that now won't be happening) - this is rather than a Moses basket as its bigger and will last much longer. A few other small things like a night light with a remote for the night feeds and a sling as didn't really get on with the baby carrier for DC1 and he grew out of it really fast.

HarrietM87 · 05/07/2020 10:58

@NameChange30 the one I’m getting is an organic mattress from naturalmat, handmade in Devon. Was £70 originally but £50 with discount, just FYI.

NameChange30 · 05/07/2020 13:14

Is that a mattress for the crib or cot?

We got our mattresses from Little Green Sheep, one for the Snuzpod (£32) and one for the cot bed (Twist mattress and protector for £175). We got 10% off those prices during black Friday weekend.

I just looked at the natural mat website and they have a travel cot mattress which would be very handy. We never got around to buying an extra mattress for the travel cot but it always seemed too hard with the thin "mattress" they come with.

HarrietM87 · 05/07/2020 13:28

It’s for the next2me. We got DS’s cot bed mattress there and it’s lovely, really good quality. We used the mattress that came with the next2me for him and it was nowhere near as nice. DS is still in the cot bed now and will be for a couple of years more so I’ll probably get the same again when DC2 is ready to move out of the next2me at 6 months ish.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/07/2020 20:34

Not much

New car seat as we didn’t have an infant carrier the first time around
New mattress
New teats (old bottles)
New dummies

I think that’s about it. We bought a buggy board and car seat adaptors for the buggy frame (as we didn’t have an infant carrier last time).

Might buy or rent myself a better breast pump if breastfeeding goes well this time. Probably a new coming home outfit for baby as most of his clothes will be hand me downs.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/07/2020 20:36

Oh yeah and a new change mat as ours split and was binned after potty training anyway

Marmite27 · 06/07/2020 20:36

Lullaby trust changed the guidance, you don’t need new mattresses in some circumstances.

I got a new baby bag, as I wanted a rucksack style one, a sling because I never had one with DC1 and tiny baby clothes as she was prem.
