Toddler eyelid drooping/one eye bigger than the other. Should I be worried?

Hi all! I could just be being an over anxious first time mum, but recently I've noticed that my 16 month old has one eyelid that droops more than the other/is bigger than the other? Feel free to tell me I'm being silly!

I've only really noticed it recently, perhaps because she's gotten bigger ect but I've looked at pics of when she was smaller and she had it then too.

It doesn't seem to affect her vision and she's perfectly well and happy. Nobody else has noticed it (or if they have they haven't mentioned it) so perhaps it's something only I've noticed!

I'm wondering if it's just a quirk she has and nothing to worry about, or wether it warrants further investigation?

I've attached a couple of pics. It seems like her right eye is smaller/left eye's upper eyelid is more prominent. In some pics you can hardly see it but in others it's fairly prominent.

I tend to be over anxious and worry as it is. I had a lazy eye as a child and it needed surgical correction (totally fine now).

Thank you!

Yes, I can see a difference (she's super cute btw! 😊 ) Maybe mention it to the health visitor/GP to put your mind at rest.

I have this and so does my son, you can't really tell now we are grown up. We have an epicanthal fold only on one side

Bodgedboxdye · 03/07/2020 17:58

What a little cutie. ❤️

It could be just a quirk. But there’s no harm in mentioning it to your health visitor.

Have you googled it?

Xx

I have this. Only noticed it as an adult but probably had it all my life. It has no noticeable effect on anything!

SquidwardTortellini95 · 03/07/2020 18:16

@Bodgedboxdye thank you 💓 No I haven't, as Google tends to bring up worst case scenarios and I'm a worrier as it is! Grin

It really doesn’t look at all noticeable.

But I get what you mean, I was also born with a lazy eye (also corrected) so I over analysed with my little girl.

Like I said, give it a mention but I don’t think it’s anything to worry yourself over.

Xxx

It looks like a difference in the eyelids to me rather than the eye. It could though be something about the eye making the lid look different though.

I'd get it checked for peace of mind.

I can see it in all of the photos you've posted. Your daughter is a cutie.

Yorkiee · 03/07/2020 19:21

I have this.. it shows more when im tired

DoAsDreamersDo · 03/07/2020 21:03

My daughter is 18 months and also has this. When I googled it, it said that a forceps birth can cause this, so I’m thinking that’s the reason. I’m going to take her to see the GP once they’re open fully again.

Buzzfrightyears · 03/07/2020 21:05

Have a Gp check it over Op just to be on the safe side.

Evelefteden · 03/07/2020 21:07

Aw she is lovely 💗

I’m sure she will be fine but just have a chat with GP when they open.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/07/2020 21:12

Just mention it to your health visitor to put your mind at rest.
She's absolutely beautiful Smile

SquidwardTortellini95 · 03/07/2020 21:13

@DoAsDreamersDo oh, that's interesting! DD wasn't a forceps birth though.

Yes, I think it’s fairly common for a number of reasons (or no reason at all, I guess), but I don’t think it’s a worry.

AnyFucker · 03/07/2020 21:21

She is gorgeous !

Any asymmetry needs a quick check. Those photos look like there is a slight downturn on one side of the mouth too.

How was she delivered, op ? A mild birth injury to the facial nerve can cause this but the good news is it tends to recover well.

mnahmnah · 03/07/2020 21:28

It looks the same as my son. A hospital specialist picked up on it when we were there for something else and later I got a letter confirming ‘congenital ptosis’. Sounds scary, but it just means he got a droopy eyelid during the birth process. He’s fine, happy, doesn’t bother him. The doctor just said he might need correction to it when he’s older if it’s affecting his vision

My dd7 months has this. I spent a lot of time googling like crazy when she was tiny, I now realise it's just a feature (I have it too, to a lesser degree.) As others have said, worse when tired, sometimes barely noticeable.

Have a close look at everyone, on tv,photos etc... you'll be amazed at the number of people- many well known - that have the same thing. And you would have never noticed it before!!

Duggeeismysaviour · 03/07/2020 21:55

Ps I wouldnt say it looks like ptosis, just a smaller eye, perhaps more so due to lower lid (like my dd)

SquidwardTortellini95 · 03/07/2020 22:05

Thank you @AnyFucker 😊 she was a totally regular vaginal birth with no interventions.

SquidwardTortellini95 · 03/07/2020 22:06

She was born quite quickly though, don't know if that might have made a difference.

mnahmnah · 03/07/2020 22:07

It was straightforward with my son, no interventions. Although he was a large baby. I would just mention it next time you see a doctor or nurse for anything

AnyFucker · 03/07/2020 22:10

Quick births can be "traumatic" births as the baby's skull doesn't get time to mould in the vaginal canal

SquidwardTortellini95 · 03/07/2020 22:17

Thank you all! I'll definitely try and get a GP appointment when they reopen (only seeing emergencies at the moment). She's definitely had it a while though. If it was new we'd be straight to the GP, but I've looked at some old pictures and it's not a new thing. She was about 7/8 months in the attached pic and you can see it. I didn't notice it at the time though!

My daughter has something similar. One eye opens slightly more than the other - I think it was because the surrounding tissues were stronger in one eye than they other. It’s barely noticeable but we had her eyes checked at the local hospital to ensure it wasn’t affecting her vision (which it wasn’t). We were told it can be cosmetically corrected when she’s older but that it can sometimes be over corrected so we will probably just leave it. Tbh we forget about it most of them time, it’s only at certain angles you can see it x

thisusernameismine · 04/07/2020 20:14

She looks perfect to me. What a little beauty 💕
