Healthy start vitamin

HV said to use this from birth. We have been. I just read the label on the bottle and it says not suitable for infants consuming more than 500ml formula. HV knew she was formula feeding and feeding over this?

What do I do? Continue using it or stop? Anyone else using health start vitamin for their LO?

Don't use them until your baby is taking less than 500ml a day of first infant formula. The formula is already fortified with vitamins.

Yorkiee · 18/06/2020 18:18

@setsoma i have been using it since day 1?? Hv said?

I'm so confused now. Why would she say to use it?

I only started vitamins with mine when she came off off formula - 1 year old.

Yorkiee · 18/06/2020 18:24

I cant believe this! Will be calling her tomorrow

HVs can be pretty ill informed. I was told the same when I asked about weaning and I had to remind her that my baby was bottle fed. She just looked confused.

I’ve just started giving vitamins to my nearly 1yo because she’s not having anywhere near 500mls of formula and will be fully off it in a couple of weeks.

Yorkiee · 18/06/2020 19:02

@Ihaveoflate thanks for that. I remember telling her on different occasions (reminding her) she is formula fed but she kept insisting that I had to give the vitamin so I did 🤷‍♀️ now im worried.

@yorkie I googled the vitamin/formula double up and apparently a newborn doesn't always consume enough and so bringing in vitamin D supplement until they do is not uncommon. Maybe your HV was taking that stance but failed to inform you to stop after a bit

dementedpixie · 18/06/2020 20:24

You are right. No need to supplement unless taking less than 500mls of formula. Breastfed babies should take them from birth

dementedpixie · 18/06/2020 20:25

what age is your baby? Is it vitamins A,C and D?

TeddyTeddy · 18/06/2020 20:31

I have a toddler that’s just turned two, the advice for him was that vitamins weren’t necessary if he was having over 500ml of formula. However, I now have an eight week old as well and the advice has changed. Both the health visitor and my GP told me to still give vitamins. I did remind both about the formula thing and they said yes to still give vitamins.

dementedpixie · 18/06/2020 20:40

Nhs is quite clear with the advice which I linked above. It only says breastfed babies need them from birth

Yorkiee · 18/06/2020 20:50

@Curious78 aww bless you! Thank you for googling. Yep been giving it since birth.. :/ didnt stop

Yorkiee · 18/06/2020 20:51

@dementedpixie she is now one week away from 8 months. It says vitamin a c and d. I actually thought it was just d.. she kept going on about vitamin d!

Yorkiee · 18/06/2020 20:52

@TeddyTeddy thank you sharing that. Did you start to give from birth?

I'm going to call tomorrow and see what they say

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 18/06/2020 20:52

There are maximum limits for vitamin D which is why supplements aren't required if formula intake is more than 500mls.

dementedpixie · 18/06/2020 20:58

Nhs says:

Children aged 1 to 10 years should not have more than 50 micrograms a day. Infants under 12 months should not have more than 25 micrograms a day

If there's 10ug in the supplement then you could work how much extra is in the formula to see if its still within the above limits.

TeddyTeddy · 18/06/2020 21:05

I haven’t given him any yet, to be honest I just forgot that the health visitor said that and only remembered when we saw the GP today. Because he’s guzzling so much formula I wasn’t worried about it, but equally I commented because I don’t think you should worry at all. I probably will get some and give them to him from now on.

dementedpixie · 18/06/2020 21:09

The advice hasnt changed though according to what I have seen online

Yorkiee · 19/06/2020 10:49

So called my HV but she wasn't there and spoke to another HV who said let me ask?! Then she said you don't have to give it anymore?! But surely I should be giving it now because we started weaning?!

I'm going to ask gp!

has formula intake dropped below 500mls? If so, keep giving them. If not, stop for now

dementedpixie · 19/06/2020 10:59

between 6 months and 5 years you should supplement A,C and D but only if less than 500mls of formula is being consumed (that bit applies more between 6months and 1 year)

Yorkiee · 19/06/2020 11:29

Thank you for the replies. She has always had over 500ml :/

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 19/06/2020 11:31

I'd stop them for now and give them again when formula intake drops below 500mls
