Cradle Cap

I was wondering if anyone had any advice, my DD is 4 months and has cradle cap, she only developed it at 2 months. The health visitor has been on at me every time I see her about it and I told her I am using child's farm coconut oil and child's farm shampoo to treat it and she said well it's clearly not working! I feel like I'm being judged, is this a sign of bad hygiene? Because I wash her in the bath regularly and she is always clean.

I can honestly say it's not from bad hygiene! My child had it and whatever we used didnt work! But in the end we got dentinox cradle cap shampoo and gently combed hair while it was on and it worked!
Dont feel like your being judged, most babies have cradle cap.

omg35 · 15/06/2020 16:27

Dentinox is amazing but am sure you're not being judged

I used to love licking cradle cap out!

Dts were bald for quite a long time so we suncreamed their heads on holiday, it was the sun team that finally got rid of it.

I thought it was best to leave it and my DS still has a small amount at 16 months. His head looks far too delicate to mess with.

SaladSauce · 15/06/2020 18:53

And what is with HV! NHS website says to leave it!

JewelTheft · 15/06/2020 18:54

Ds had bad cradle cap, dentinox shampoo was the only thing that worked for us too

sleepyhead · 15/06/2020 18:56

A soft baby brush is good for brushing it out once you've softened the scales. IME it doesn't wash out - you need to remove it, but gently obv.

Both my dcs had it for ages though. I think ds1 had it well into toddlerhood but he had thick dark hair so it wasn't noticeable. It doesn't do them any harm.

fee1234 · 15/06/2020 18:59

I used dentinox for a good few days then gently lifted and peeled it away. It was very satisfying!

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 15/06/2020 19:00

Not the point... but how are you seeing a HV? I can't even get one on the phone.

mummyof2darlings · 15/06/2020 19:03

My dd is 10 months everytime we clear it it comes backing now using body shop cocoa butter on it and seems to be working currently

TerribleCustomerCervix · 15/06/2020 19:06

It’s not from bad hygiene! Your HV is being picky AF to keep going on about it, it’s totally harmless, just unsightly.

If you do want to shift it, I would bother messing about with coconut oil etc- life is just too short. Dentinox will lift the worst of it after two or three washes.

Quackersandcheese3 · 15/06/2020 19:26

Tbh it gave me the creeps when my DD got it. I found it very unsightly , I used dentinox shampoo , sometimes used exfoliator gloves gently to help lift it, or soft brush on the hair too .

ThickFast · 15/06/2020 19:29

It’s not to do with hygiene. I got rid of my daughter’s and it was so amazing afterwards. I couldn’t stop sniffing her head coz it suddenly didn’t smell oily. It all came back after a year or so and I’ve just got rid of it again. She’s 2 now and I can’t stop smelling her head again. So do it for that reason alone.

TinyPigeon · 15/06/2020 19:33

Breastmilk worked for us. Your HV is fussy though, it does no harm being there.

TankGirl97 · 15/06/2020 19:38

There is nothing wrong with having cradle cap! Your hv is talking absolute nonsense.
If you want to get rid of it, put conditioner on her hair and gently comb through with a nit comb, that removes it really well.

ThickFast · 15/06/2020 19:47

I second nit comb. Put oil on it and then comb backwards through hair.

BumpLoading · 15/06/2020 19:58

@AriettyHomily i really hope you mean picking not licking Confused haha!

AriettyHomily · 15/06/2020 20:49

@BumpLoading oh god, definitely picking, licking it out really is grim GrinGrin

Okki · 15/06/2020 21:37

I used olive oil - applied with a cotton bud and gently rubbed it in. Made the scabby bits all soft and lovely to pick off. Kept me amused for ages. Made DS's hair really soft too. Grin

KatyB222 · 15/06/2020 23:07

I tried loads of things but coconut oil was by far the best.

Get coconut oil rub it in your hands as it's hard in the tub, rub in your hands to warm up then rub into scalp (not hard), put a cotton at on and leave for a few hours. Repeat each day and it'll go.

Honestly it was like a miracle for us! Please give it a go before the more chemical ones.. DS had eczema too and we were told not to use olive oil as it causes excess (sebum I think) which makes it worse. I'm not sure if it rebates to cradle cap, but might.

I see one when she has been getting her immunisations.

Thanks guys I will keep going with the coconut oil and try using her soft baby brush as well, I will also get dentinox since that seems to be popular. My HV seems to pick at everything tbh. My DD has a little bubble in her eye which I noticed from birth and she has always said she can't see it and I'm being paranoid but eventually I got a doctor to look at it and they said it was a cyst so have now been referred to paediatrics. She said she is concerned about her weight aswell but she puts.on weight everytime she's weighed and has went up in the centiles. I think she just doesn't like me.

God she sounds annoying. My son had a cyst next to his eye and we got it removed.

KatyB222 · 16/06/2020 07:05

Try leaving off the shampoo, it's probably drying it too much

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 16/06/2020 07:10

If it's really quite bad go to your GP - cradle cap (is harmless) is a type of eczema (seborrhoeic infantile dermatitis) and can be caused by an over growth of yeast (not caused by being dirty - the yeast is on everyone's skin all of the time it just sometimes gets a bit out of control). The GP will be able to advise you on what to use or prescribe something.
