Cradle Cap

I was wondering if anyone had any advice, my DD is 4 months and has cradle cap, she only developed it at 2 months. The health visitor has been on at me every time I see her about it and I told her I am using child's farm coconut oil and child's farm shampoo to treat it and she said well it's clearly not working! I feel like I'm being judged, is this a sign of bad hygiene? Because I wash her in the bath regularly and she is always clean.

Information from the British Institute of Dermatologists

I used loyon baby, it’s about £10 a bottle from boots, you’ll be able to see it online. It’s a oil you leave on, I think for a couple of hours then wash and brush out, the flakes do come away.
I used the dentinox shampoo and it made no difference.

If you're going to use the dentinox cradle cap shampoo I would recommend doing a patch test first. I used it on my dd and she had a terrible reaction. It wasn't until I looked at the instructions in the box that it said ensure a patch test before use. Misleading because the box says "gentle enough for daily use" or something like that. A couple of days later I saw a post on sm of another mum saying her dd had the same reaction and loads of people agreed. Agree with others saying use natural oils, we used to use coconut oil and I would just pick it out or use a comb.

Try dentinox as others have suggested but honestly other than brushing some off after a bath we've just left my sons.

I also don't understand why you are seeing a health visitor at your daughters vaccinations? We just saw the person giving the vaccines and that was it.

Vegetable oil worked great for both of my babies. Leave it on for a few hours then wash off and comb. It just brushes right out.

Makes your baby smell like a fry up for a bit though 😂

No judgement here, I've only just managed to clear 4 yr old DDs cradle cap by using a nit comb everytime I wash her hair. But it's taken the best part of 6 months of every other day washing and combing.

Some kids just seem to be prone to it. My health visitor has never been bothered and it's definitely not a sign of bad hygiene.

Your HV sounds like a nightmare! Ask for a new one!

On the cradle cap side of things, DS had it for ages. I went through a whole bottle of dentinox and it didn't shift it at all. What worked for us was Dove baby all in one, the stuff you can use on their hair and body. Have been using it for a few months now and it's gone completely! Certainly wasn't expecting that to work but there we go

emotionalrangeofateaspoon · 16/06/2020 09:09

My DS who is almost two still has it! It's unsightly and sometimes he itches it and I would love nothing better then to sit and pick it all out but he won't let me! I do use a soft brush every time we wash his hair but I aint found anything that works so far!

TinyPigeon · 16/06/2020 11:34

You can opt out of seeing her if you want, it's not compulsory to have their "advice".

TheVanguardSix · 16/06/2020 11:44

Nizoral and a fine-tooth comb solved DD's ongoing problem.

RosiePosies · 16/06/2020 17:09

We used coconut oil, left it on for a bit and then in the bath we used a soft brush

wineymummy · 16/06/2020 17:24

DD is 3 and still has it. Now hates having her hair washed so wish I'd paid it more attention earlier! We are back to using dentinox and combing after waiting for it to resolve itself to no avail.

Yorkiee · 17/06/2020 20:27

I left it. All gone by 5 months

Ihaveoflate · 17/06/2020 21:39

Aveeno baby shampoo has worked for my baby. She has sensitive skin so didn’t want to use dentinox as I’d heard it can be harsh.

Alittlebitta · 17/06/2020 21:51

I soaked the scalp in baby oil and then scraped it out with a nit comb Blush everyone I know did it like this! It is not a sign of bad hygiene - every baby gets it at some point.

I started a thread a couple of months ago on this and olive oil was suggested and worked a treat!

I was using childs farm coconut oil and it was slowly improving but the olive oil cleared it up within 10 days.

I used a cotton pad soaked with oil twice a day. Applied a thin layer before our morning walk and stuck a hat on him and then again before bed.

Our DD had CC too and it only cleared up when we went on holiday to Italy and were applying sunscreen every day. Not sure if it was the cream or the sun or a combo of both but with the weather getting better this should also help
