Suncream

What sun cream do you use /recommend?

I have 2dc (age 3+1) plus DH and I are pale skinned so we all use the same high factor cream.

I use per instructions and nhs site topping up frequently (more so the kids than us)

We're on our second bottle of cream this week and at average £10 a bottle I've realised I could end up spending a fortune on creams.

Are you sure you aren't over using? We all need some sunlight and a bottle per week sounds like you're being over zealous, don't forget they really need to build up their vitamin D stores right now

Ipadipod · 30/05/2020 09:09

I’ve always used Boots Soltan , they do factor 50 and it’s not too expensive.

Ipadipod · 30/05/2020 09:11

I think a bottle a week for 4 people sounds about right , 2 or 3 applications a day , it soon goes.

I rate the Nivea kids one. It's nearly always on offer in Boots

TooMinty · 30/05/2020 09:13

I use Lidl kids factor 50 (for me as well as 2 DC). Pretty sure it isn't £10 per bottle. I also find just staying covered up/in the shade is easier too. For example, when kids are in paddling pool they wear UV rash tops or t-shirts rather than bare chest with sunscreen. And I'll sit in the sun for 15 minutes to half an hour then move to the shade.

dementedpixie · 30/05/2020 09:16

Use own brand cream (look for 4/5 star UVA rating) as it's much cheaper and just as effective

dementedpixie · 30/05/2020 09:18

I have use Aldi, Lidl, tesco, asda, morrisons, boots, etc stuff and it's all worked fine and often has a higher star rating than branded products

MsChatterbox · 30/05/2020 09:24

I use tesco, it's £4 a bottle.

Have also used superdrug stuff as well as my list above

NannyR · 30/05/2020 09:26

Boots soltan and supermarket own brands are much cheaper than £10 a bottle and are usually better in terms of UVA protection than the big brand ones like nivea.

ImFree2doasiwant · 30/05/2020 09:27

That's a lot of suncream! I apply factor 50 to 2 children (3 &4) kids sensitive as the 4 yr old can't use most suncreams. I use whatever I have lying around for me. I haven't finished a bottle this year although do have several on the go (one in the car, one down at our stables, one in the house, etc)

Acidrain · 30/05/2020 09:27

Avon kids factor 50 - cheap and smells like sherbet

dementedpixie · 30/05/2020 09:28

The Avon stuff tested in the link failed the tests for SPF. It's also expensive compared to other brands

minnie465 · 30/05/2020 09:40

There was a tv show on a few months ago (comparing supermarket and branded goods I think). They said that it doesn't matter what sun cream you use. The problem is that a lot of us don't use enough of it! So sounds about right that you are going through so much. i started buying Lidl brand since. Only a couple of quid for kids spf 50.

SeasideArms · 30/05/2020 09:43

Could you use uv suits for the kids? Great for the garden, beach etc...... cuts down on a lot of cream applications!

Flynn999 · 30/05/2020 10:09

I’ve got the aldi one at that seems good, although it does say on the pack that the tub we have (the largest they had) does 6-7 full body applications for the average sized adult, (it also says to top up every few hours). So you are probably using the right amount but branded sun creams are ££££ I think tesco tend to die 3 for £10 on nivea every so
Often so maybe worth checking them out if your keen to stick to brands.

The aldi one we have is factor 50 5 star uva and suitable for sensitive skin. Think it’s maybe £4

happytoday73 · 30/05/2020 10:10

We use ultrasun... Very expensive but it's great and a family size tub lasts

Toastypate · 30/05/2020 12:27

Think I will look at aldi, I nearly bought Avon but Google told me it failed safety tests.
I get totally overwhelmed on a safety.
Our garden doesn't offer much shade so we're in and out all day, I top up when we back out. also pre lockdown we're out and about lots.

Thanks for all the suggestions

I'm very pale and burn easily, and use P20 SPF 50. Its not cheap (shop around, Savers often have a really good price on it, and Amazon currently is discounted), but I can genuinely put a coat on in the morning after showering - it must go on clean skin - and do a triathlon involving pulling a wetsuit on, swimming for an hour, cycling, running and lots of hanging around and not get burnt

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 30/05/2020 12:47

Wilkos own make factor 50.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 30/05/2020 12:48

Pressed send too soon....I also use the all day one think it’s called P20 from Amazon for my DD, but I’m allergic to it.

Buy a sunshade for the garden, UV suits for the kids. Then you’ll use much less.

I like Boots own and buy in bulk when on offer. Not tried on my baby yet, she has Child’s Farm for now but is always in the shade and covered up at home so needs very little.

Toastypate · 30/05/2020 18:00

I'm working a on a shade, parasol is useless as it's a large garden and it only shades a small bit, I need to get something big.

I used a all day one either piz buin or p20, I forget which, a few years back while on holiday and both my and my friend burnt.
Turns out they are meant for 8hr or less with sweating, swimming, towelling etc. Only around 3hrs in water which shocked me. For rest of holiday I had to put it on more frequently for when getting in and out of the pool/sea and towelling etc admittedly not as much as normal but still than I would have liked for the price

I only ever use Garnier Ambre Solaire factor 50+ on me, and the same but kids version on ds. I burn extremely easily so have to be very careful.
Also use Garnier Ambre Solaire sensitive advanced after sun as well. I keep it in the fridge so it's always lovely and cold. Perfect if I've had to be out in the sun (though I always avoid it as much as I can. Not a sun person at all).
